I’ve recently dug out my old copy of the original GalCiv, and decided I’d like to give the sequel a try. I knew about the Dark Avatar expansion, but now I see there’s Twilight of the Arnor and Endless Universe also! I’ts kinda confusing :)

I was wondering what people would recommend… Are these expansions worthwhile for a more ‘casual’ player?

I can see the original GalCiv II being sold quite cheap online, but I’ve also read about bugs, and I don’t have fast internet to download patches (assuming they are big), so I’m also eyeing up the ‘Ultimate Edition’ which is supposed to be released at the end of October with everything included, and still cheaper than most games…

Any advice is most welcome :)

And another question: how good is the spaceship editor/builder? It definately looks cool from what I've seen, and I trust it beats Spore’s cosmetic-only approach!

I own all three and love them. But each builds on the previous much the same way Civ expansions do. If you only play once in a great while the vanilla version is fine. But the free update is said to be geared toward ToA the most and DL somewhat. If you were to buy just one expansion I'd say ToA.

I of course, also play the scenarios so I had no choice but to get 'em all.

You can only buy ToA if you have DA. But yeah, it depends on how much you expect to play it.

Thankyou for your advice! I think I will wait and see how expensive the 'ultimate edition' is going to be.

I can't go back to playing without Twilight of the Arnor. The unique technology trees make such a huge difference to your play experience.
