Here I go:

I can't get any! multiplayer mode to work, not even the hotseat mode.
I get to the setup screen where I get to set up absolutely nothing, because all the butons to click are missing, leaving only blank squares:

When I give up and click the X to exit, that doesn't work either.
But I can write in the chat window, and click the game limits button. The entire system is not frozen, just Civ.
I've tried tuning off everything except windows and civ, but no effect. here is the tasklist after the lockup:

I'm running:
Pentium III 866 MHz
128 MB RAM
GeForce 2 MX 32 MB RAM
Win 98 Se
Civ III Conquests V. 1.00
ADSL internet connection

I've searched for months for a solution to this problem, but it seems that noone has ever experienced this, other than me..

I've tried un-installing and installing, I know that I got DirectX 9.0b, I've tried disabling my Anti-Virus and my firewall programs, and any thing else running in the background (though the firewall should really not mean anything in a hot-seat game).
I've tried the Atari official support forum, and they did a great job, IGNORING me. I tried to look for some support e-mail adress, found one, but it was for north-americans only!!, sendt a mail anyway, didn't help. Sendt a mail to the scandinavian Atari support office, no effect.
So this is really my last hope....

Oh and BTW
Patching: On Civ3.com I can only find north american patches, and on the official FTp i can in addition to that find language patches for french, german etc.
What patches to use for my game, bought in Norway, and will they solve my problem?

**really** hoping that someone will help

I take it that the rest of the game works fine? Do the buttons appear for that? Are the buttons actually missing, or just the graphics for the buttons? (I take it this is a legitimate copy).

Do you have Gamespy installed? Have you tried this with the internat disconnected? I remember reading some threads about people having problems with multiplayer setup, and it was soemthing to do with the program trying to locate the gamespy server when they weren't connected to the internet (lock-up of some description). I'll see if I can find more details. :)

Edit: See This thread. Any help?

Thanx.
yes, my game is a legitimate copy :) (one in a very small collection :P...)
I have now tried with internet disconected, uninstalling GameSpy, installing it again, still the same.
Buttons not showing and not working.
This only happens in multiplayer mode, else the game works perfectly.

Are there anyone from Atari support reading this forum (I seem to remember some atari guy replies in some other threads...)?

I'm going to try some of the tricks from the thread linked to in ainwoods last post, but tomorrow, its getting late today.
But I don't have too much hope, cause they seem to hasve a different problem.

Btw, thank you for bothering to try to help me AInwood :) Cheers!
(sorry, my english no so good today)

I've kind of figured it out now.
It seemed that pressing ctrl-alt-del and terminating my personal firewall didn't disengage the firewall. Pressing the "stop firewall engine" button in the firewall setup screen did though :p
And with the firewall properly shut down, everything seems to work fine, at least I managed to start a PBEM game without problems.

But I'm not quite comfortable being without firewall protection.
I've tried granting both Gamespy, and C3C full access both ways, on all ports, but it still crashes.

Are there anyone who has succesfully configured Norman Personal Firewall to work with C3C?

I think I've found out what I did wrong! (at least it seems to work now, I've not tried to play a full game yet...)
I had to allow Directplay to connect to the internet, I did this by allowing dpnsvr.exe to connect (are there more files connected to Directplay that I should allow?)

At least I think I'm finally ready for some Multiplayer atcion :D

Btw:
Do I have to allow more programs than Civ, Gamespy and directplay, to avoid trouble when I start playing?

Sorry for bump, but I'm having this same problem, when last month is was working perfectly but now this problem. If anyone has any ideas let me know please thanks.
