This is racism, right?

Sorry, but its not illegal to put a black lawn jocky in someones parking place as a joke. It might be against company policy, but its not illegal.

Yes because repeated hate-motivated harrassment is just a-ok. At the very least it constitutes a Hostile Workplace.

And if not, then how can you get mad at some guy putting a lawn jockey one time in front of a black guys parking space?
:lol:Just once, whats the big deal? Hey, why not burn a giant swastica in front of a Jewish home, you know, as a joke, just once.

A single incident does not a hostile workplace make. Who said anything about repeated? Or harrassment? A single joke is neither.

I didnt think I would have to explain the obvious differences in these two actions to someone like you. Apples and oranges, apples and oranges. So you would equate Mel Brooks racial humor with Hitlers Final Solution?

Bottom line, there are specific laws covering burning crosses or swastikas on someones lawn (i.e NOT A JOKE) as opposed to someone putting a lawn jockey on a parking spot.

There was more than one post after the OP that at least to me, indicated problems like this were a reoccuring matter in this work place, this was only one of the most recent and most extreme.

 So burning a swastica in the parking space of a Jewish employee is acceptable once:crazyeye:

Would anyone find that funny? Probably not.

Lawn Jockey? Might be an inside joke for someone. Who knows.

Bottom line, putting a lawn jockey out is NO WHERE NEAR burning crosses or swastikas as part of a hate crime. To even compare the two is insulting.

Well, I haven't read through all the pages as I just got back, but I would certainly call this racism based upon reading the first page.

One can discuss and even make jokes related to race without it being racism, but it needs to be mutual, and is usually done amoungst friends, not a bunch of coworkers targeting one person.

Carlos Mencia is one of my favorite comedians. He usually closes his show by pointing out to the audience how we are no longer the "land of the free." He can get away with saying what he wants to in his job, but just you try that tomorrow at work... :mischief:

Dave Chappelle is a genius. Have you seen the "Niggar (sic) Family" episode about a white family named "Niggar"?

I strongly disagree with the statement that offense is only in the eyes of the offended. That is the kind of junk thinking that makes every mis-timed comment into sexual harrassment, or even an innocent look into a hostile work environment. Intention is also needed.

Now, what would be funny is for the black co-worker to get a lawn jockey, put it in front of his own parking place, then start to accuse everyone in the office of racism just to watch them all squirm and try to figure out who did it.

It's racism and very much illegal. I really don't know how anyone could maintain their sanity being around that kind of scum so much of the time.
MB is right. Its not illegal to be scum.

However, of course, his idea of 'funny' is, I guess, subjective.

You know, MB, there are people that would find burning crosses and swastikas hilarious. I know, I've met them. Shoot, I work with a couple of them. Just because some people find offensive stuff funny doesn't make it funny. It just makes those who would find it funny ignorant, and shows you who's not worthy of your respect.

I've got a pretty good sense of humor, but the constant joking around work about Mexicans and blacks often offends me, and I let it be known that I disagree and I also let them know what I think of their ignorant brand of low brow humor. Funny thing is, I think they kind of respect me for it. Still I'm sure they probably make jokes about me when I'm not around, but I'd rather have it that way, than just going along and laughing at their lack of intelligence and tollerance.

Is is racism yes.

But very often racism can be funny.

Thus explaining how "All in the Family" was so popular for so many years. Or, the fact that I think "Blazing Saddles" is the funniest dang movie ever made.

So, if this were an isolated incident, it should be laughed off. If its a regular occurance, then someone should be offended rightly so.
Thing is, MB, in those shows we were laughing AT the racism and racists, not with them. They're funny because they're ignorant and backwards.

Well I can't say I'd be too offended at someone burning a bloody swastika...
