This is when you know civ5 has good music

I am one of the few people on this forum who has played civ from at least civ3, likes civ5, and is voicing their opinion about it. Although I'm not here too talk about game play.

When i first started playing civ3 I thought the music was very good. It always got you into the mood of the era. It helped get you into that "just one more turn" mode. My favorite of them being the "TechnoMixFull". With every era I was excited to hear the new soundtrack. That being said I was skeptical when it said each leader has their own music instead of each era having different music.

I haven't listened to the civ4 music that much since I haven't really played i that much since I didn't really like it. That being said I can't can't comment much on their music, but all I know is that I really did not like the "Baba Yetu" that everyone seems to love.

When civ5 came out I first played it in a quit room with the computer being the only thing I can hear. I fell in love with the soundtrack immediately. Even the menu music gets me real pumped for the game while I am waiting for it to load. I found out that the individual war/peace music worked great. I sometimes found it irritating in past civs that the music would be so "happy" while I am trying to conquer the world. The war music especially really gets you into the game. My favorite of them being Elizabeth's war music, Bismark's war music, and Catherine's war music. Just about every peace seems good music. I also love how the music changes to other leader's music when you visit them in the diplomacy screen. The only complaint I have is that the American war music does not seem war-like enough.

After listening to the music for a while I started listening to them on YouTube. I eventually wanted to listen to them without internet access. So I want in the civ5 music folder (C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v\assets\Sounds\Streamed\Music) and found the music. All the music was OGG file type and I couldn't play it. I then used Switch Audio File Converter to convert all the music into MP3 files. After this a couple days later I put them on my iPod Touch. To do this I had to import all of these to iTunes, but the file names were very messy. They had underscores and stuff everywhere; so I edited all the file names to make them more neat. I also made the artist "Civilization 5", the composer Geoff Knorr, and renamed the album to reflect what belonged in (Leader Music, Europe, America...). This whole process took a couple hours. So yes, I like the music. I have listened to the music in tons of non-civ places such as the couch, while doing homework, in a car (makes for an epic car ride), and even on the toilet. I do have one question though since I haven't had much time to play a lot of civ5. Does the "America", "Europe", "Asia", and "MiddleEastAfrica" music play for all civilizations in that reason. For example, if I am France will I hear music from "Europe" just as often as I hear my own custom leader music? On a side note I find it funny that "MiddleEastAfrica" is the only region without a "peace" folder. Every other region has a "peace", "war", and "either" subfolder of music. "MiddleEastAfrica" only has a "war" and "either" folder.

I miss era-specific music. Without changes in the music, there lacks a sense of progression and growth. The eras just blend in together without any distinct "flavour" to each of them.

For the same reason, I miss having leaderheads changing their clothes each era. It was cool seeing ancient people dressed up in modern day clothes, with spectacles and whatnot.

agreed. Music in Civ5 is certainly nice, but I'd like more themes... Not to mention than to listen to same tracks throughout the entire game...

Generally you only hear your custom leader's music when you're starting up a game or loading a game with that leader, OR (in endless cycles) the war theme upon victory. I wish Civ V had more flexibility in music selection. The music is, in my opinion, better than that of Civ IV, and it has much more harmonization to it, perhaps due to the employment of an orchestra.

But having the war theme play endlessly upon victory? Really? There should be an option to turn that off. And why is it that you never hear your own custom leader music when waging war on another AI? You end up hearing that AI leader's music instead. ALWAYS. :|

Civ V has music?

Well, nothing beats Civ 2 soundtrack. Awesome. The Civ IV menu music is just epic. I just didn't notice Civ V music much. Only a classic music I knew, once.

To answer to OP's question you only hear one of four different types of music depending on which civilization area you are in. So files in the European folder will play for all European leaders (and America) throughout the game.

I really like the music as well. If there could be a few special tracks used for each era that would make it basically the perfect setup.

Other than it's nice and not distracting, the only time I've really noticed how much I've liked the background music is playing Japan or Ottomans.

Maybe something went wrong when unpacking CiV, because there sure is a peace folder in the MiddleEastAfrica folder.
Btw, there's no real need to convert all those .ogg music files to mp3 format. The freeware/open source VLC player has the .ogg format in its inventory.

Hear, hear!

Well I will have to double check those files then. About the other thing I still needed to convert if I wanted to play them on my iPod.

Good except for that one tune that keeps playing when I use the Songhai that sounds like a sitar version of "Strangers in the Night." It drives me crazy for some reason.

I've got a similar story but regarding CIV IV - the soundtrack I tend to keep listening as every other music. But hey - no wonder - they employed quite good composers for the soundtrack - Dvorak/Bach etc. Have been on couple of John Adams concerts since I heard the modern era soundtrack.
