Thoughts on Diablo III?

http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/4078818115

As for bugs, this is a serious bug for me right now. Interestingly, it worked pretty good for my witch doctor, but this bug plagues my barbarian for some reason. Or maybe the bug is just getting worse and worse the more I play. No fix for it yet. Blizzard doesn't seem aware of it.

The screen blacks out for a few seconds, and I'm unable to do anything (although I haven't actually tried attacking or taking potions). I can't play hardcore until that bug is taken care of. I've died once because of it. A couple other times I nearly died.

I also get lag spikes, but that's a separate issue with my wireless ISP. I don't have access to a non wireless ISP (Cox cable is unusuable in my older neighborhood because they won't replace the old wiring). It's frustrating that a single player game is hampered by my bad internet connection. When I do a review in the review thread, I will be giving this game very low marks on bugs because of these issues. I shouldn't need such a fast internet connection to play a single player game. They assume everyone in the U.S. has perfect internet, and that isn't the case. Internet in the U.S. lags behind the rest of the world because they won't spend money to upgrade outdated infrastructure.

I still have a bug where I go to pick up gold, but it picks up normal level items too. My bags get filled with normal level items I did not intend to pick up. Which means I have to clean out my inventory every so often because my bags get full. In D2 normal level items were worth more, here they rarely go for more than 5 gold making them useless. I don't want to pick up normal items, I just want the gold!

edit: This bug only seems to affect my barbarian. Strange. Glad I didn't wast time with my video drivers and all that. Playing my witch doctor is fine. I didn't want to play him without my brother, but oh well. Hopefully I don't get too far ahead of him. My witch doctor is much more fun to play anyways.

re-edit: I guess it does happen to my witch doctor too. But only once in 45 minutes vs. once every few minutes with my barbarian. hmmm

re-re-edit: I finished the game with my brother helping me in the final battle. The act 3 final battle I joined a public game. Overall I'd say it's a little bit easier than Diablo 2 normal. Although D2 you could spam potions the final battle which you can't do here. So that's the only tricky part of the final battle. Utilizing haunt (with the rune that gives health back) and darts that give mana back helped in that battle. I also used the fetish army, and zombie charger spell. I also used my dogs and gargantuan. Might not be the best setup, but it seemed to work for me. I usually use a more AOE setup, but this worked good for this battle. And I had set it up with the rune that my dogs would sometimes give a health globe when they died. I forgot to check my passives in that battle, but it worked out. I'll have to micro that a bit more on nightmare. My brother had no vitality gear, so it took a few tries because he kept dying (he was less than level 30 too). I couldn't do it by myself. Although I went in cold without reading his abilities.

The bug is affecting my witch doctor a little more, but thankfully not during battle. It's almost like a game lag bug. Act 3 and 4 feel a little shorter than D2. The maps overall feel smaller with less exploration and a little more linear. I would have liked to seen a little more content. But I do like the crafting system, and the followers seem a little more fleshed out (dialogue and back stories). I can't really say it's any better than D2. It's about the same.

..but in some other aspects it's bit too much like Diablo 2. I've now begun Act 2, and if Act 3 is in a a jungle I shall be very annoyed.
...Oh great ! Snake people and a sewer level. Are you f-ing kidding me ?

This is one thing that really bothered me as well. It really, really seemed like a re-hash considering that the first three acts had all been done before. Act IV was a nice change and I really enjoyed it, but it still irks me that the world itself didn't evolve at all.

Also, I don't understand anyone complaining about the plot in comparison to the previous iterations. Do you guys remember the in-game story from the first two Diablos? Because there pretty much wasn't any. D3's story is crap, but it's much more refined and well-written crap than existed before. Honestly, when people complain about the plot being weaker than the previous games, I pretty much dismiss their entire opinion on the game because there seems to be no way they are actually giving it a fair review.

I don't even remember D1 having a plot. :) But maybe because it's been so long. It's a pretty generic good vs. evil plot like this one. I'm almost tempted to put in D1 and see if it will run on Windows 7. I'm curious how much has changed.

I do wish they kept more shrines in the game. D1 had random shrines, including harmful ones.

They did make the game a little easier, but I don't think they went overboard on making a carebear game like World of Warcraft is now. I'll try out nightmare and see how that is. But I believe they took out XP penalties for death now.

I doubt it will run nativly. D2 doesnt even run properly on win7 unless you use dxwnd. 256 color games have a bug when it goes to full screen mode that screws w/ the colors. You might have luck running D1 under dosbox though.

If you download it straight off Battle.net it runs just fine in Win7. I don't think they have D1 up there though.

D2 runs fine on my computer. I played it last year. It's still installed. I'm running Win 7 64 bit btw.

Yeah my main issue with Nightmare is gear. I can't upgrade the blacksmith anymore until I find those pages or whatever. I'm still wearing low 20's gear that dropped. At one point even when I was level 28 I was using a level 14 piece of gear. :) It's difficult to find appropriate level gear in this game that is useful for my particular character.

I'm about halfway through Act 2 nightmare at the moment and I'm not having much in the way of gear issues. I've really started buying a lot of stuff off the AH. If you set your search parameters for low buyout prices you can usually find some pretty good deals. I just hit lvl 40 and my DH has ~11k health and does about 2k damage.

I'll have to look for low buyout prices. Good tip. Because when I started seeing things like 100k and 200k buyouts, I just left. :) I'm poor at the moment.

finally got DH to 60, going through act 2 inferno now

Act III is in Arreat, but Act IV is visually different from anything before.

Act IV is visually different from Diablo 1&2 but it's right out of another Blizzard franchise.
Spoiler :

It's a goddamned Protoss city.

Talk about creative bankruptcy.

I'm not hating on the game. It's fun and I knew what to expect, but I'm really asking myself what Blizzard was doing all those years in development hell.

yeah as one review I read said: The game isn't breaking any new ground, and doesn't introduce anything new to the genre. And that is true, there is nothing really original in this game, but it is fun. So that does count for something.

Anyone know any good websites with strategies/guides for Diablo3? Google searches turn up guides where they expect you to pay for them. I need not point out the wrongness of paying for a guide. My brother thought it would be good to have dummies in town to practice on, but I told him that would make it even more like WOW. But the one good thing about that is I could test my spells to see which ones work best. Right now I have no idea which one of my spells do the most damage. I fell into one style of playing using soul harvest to get the stat boost. But I'm finding it a little dangerous now in nightmare to get that close to mobs to use soul harvest. I wish the range was higher... So I may need to change my normal strategy for clearing groups of mobs. Any websites helpful in finding best strats would be nice, thank you.

Turn on detailed tooltips.

elective mode off & stupid tooltips on being the default, with no ingame message anywhere I've seen to indicate that there are sensible options, was a really stupid idea.

Must be a patched executable then. If you run it off the CD you will likely have issues. There is a particular Direct X 3D call that was needed to make a game run full screen that has been depreciated and now in the later editions of Direct X, does not return the proper value, causing colors to invert. That issue plagues starcraft straight off the CD as well. I supposed they must of patched that for the site downloads.

Yeah I had some fancy colour issues when playing SC1 off the CD, didn't have such issues when I downloaded it off battle.net so they must have at least done something like that.

I still have a hard time figuring out what weapons will deal most damage with the wizard I'm playing. I just look at DPS, but then you end up wielding wands, swords, and bows, anything that gives high damage. But the actual attack speed must have an impact on something. I dunno how to choose weapons.

For all classes, the highest dps gives the most damage.

For classes like wizards, there's a caveat, which has to do with your arcane power and damage dealing abilities. For example, I used arcane orb a lot on my Wiz, which is a high AP cost, high damage spell. It is directly affected by weapon speed - faster weapon means you cast orbs faster. Each orb will do less damage, but more orbs means the dps averages out. HOWEVER, each orb costs the same AP regardless, so a fast weapon means you get less bang per cast.

On the other hand, a big slow weapon might make for really powerful arcane orb shots, but it also slows down your casting speed. This isn't a big deal on lower difficulties, but the higher up you go, the more vital it may be to shoot off a quick spell and then move. In other words, slow casting speeds actually force your character to stand still longer while they do the animation. It essentially roots you in place for a moment.

The short answer, for a wizard, is this: If you rely on arcane power spells (like arcane orb, meteor, etc) to do damage, get a slow weapon (.9 to 1.1 speed) while you're leveling up. If you tend to use signature spells more, then just use the highest dps weapon and you can tailor weapon speed to whatever you prefer.

And without a doubt, if you're starting to struggle in an area, hit the AH and upgrade your weapon - it makes loads of difference.

On a side note, despite the fact that I think the game has a lot going for it and I actually talked it up in this thread, I ultimately canceled my account and got my money back from Bliz. Lag and rubberbanding in a single player game (seriously?!), the huge hitbox issues that become very noticeable on hell and inferno difficulties (this is where things are smacking you from 10 yards away, and projectiles are hitting you even though you dodged them - basically the game client is calculating hits against your character at the beginning of the enemy attack animation, not at the end where it would seem logical), and the excessive kiting that needs to be done against inferno level mobs just made the game suddenly very unfun for me. I'm kinda a hard-core, end-game player with games like this... so that ruined it for me. Being that this is a Blizzard product and a 60 dollar game, I have high expectations that just weren't met. Blizzard USED to mean polished, masterfully made, finished games... but clearly no longer.

I have no problem with running standard D2 in Win7 in fullscreen mode. You just have to chose to use DirectDraw rendering IIRC.

Well, I just finished it on normal with my DH, and out of curiosity I have to ask how you're supposed to defeat Diablo with a melee class (I just started a hardcore Barb).
I fought him mostly beyond visual range with caltrops, spike traps and by just shooting in his general direction.
I'm also quite miffed that I still haven't found a single unique or set item..
