Strategy: a matter of priority.......
How many of you when attacking enemy cities have a sense of priority in mind, that is, which city to attack first?
I think it is a good practice to decide which city to attack first. The high priority targets will be those cities that are Capitals, those that have important wonders built, or those that have high population. By capturing these cities, you succesfully take away the benefits of the those Wonders, decrease their productivity, and reduce their population tremendously. Furthermore, it's not always the case that the "better" the city, the harder it is to captured. Keep this "priority" in mind next time......

A strange thing happened to my Spy

I am not sure if any of your spies have encountered this strange
thing...... At the beginning of my turn, one of my spies was stationed inside
a transport, which is adjacent to a Celtic city. I activate the spy and attempted to incite
revolt, which cost about 700 Gold, but when I move my spy onto the land square next to
the Celtic city, and when I select 'incite revolt', the cost increased from 700
to 900 Gold in the same term!! My explanation for this is that it may be due to the fact that the spy
is a little tire. :-) Next time when you want to incite an enemy city, station it next to
the city, (if it's safe, (such as: in my case, on a transport, protected by a battleship.).
And incite revolt in the first move your spy makes, not second move...
You can save some money this way!

I hope my explanation to this strange situation is correct....

I can't help but laugh at my own foolishness (the second post).

its not too far off.....1st is bang on

I agree, both sound pretty logical, although #2 is a bit on the crazy side, but before we knew Civ wasn't quite so complex.

Trying to recall this from memory. ...

Somewhere, out there on the web, is a discussion on prices to incite on revolts. The author determined that the principal variable is "distance from the capital" that the Spy is located; if a spy attempts to incite a revolt from the side of a city that is closest to the capital, it will cost decidedly more than if the the revolt is incited from the side that is furtherest from the city. A simple rule of thumb, which is why, for the life of me, I cannot find that web page again.

After running a test or two, this is the principal variable involved; terrain type, roads, movement points expended, do not appear to have any effect on this price of inciting revolts.

They don't, it's all about distance to capital, and if you think about it, well if your a programer, it's most simple that way.

Who am I to judge and strike you down? But you're Pushing and shoving me. You minimize my movement anyway, I must persuade you another way. There's no love in fear, but i'd have it no other way -Tool

Well - thanks for the tips, Thunderfall...

That's great to look back a bit. I was just reading the treads about how we started off playing civ.

My main strategy in the beginning, was to maximize the number of sea movements

, and not to build so many improvements in the city, to keep the cities on the lowest budget as possible, to save gold...

I am ashamed to say I tought that to some poor beginners...

I guess there are advantages to not buying a game until it's been out for 5 years and all this information is already public knowledge. I thank you all for making the transition easy for me!

Couldn't find the site that had the graphic image illustrating differences in the cost based on relative location of spy/diplomat to enemy capital. Did rediscover this post:

From an alt.games.civ2 post by Daniël Proost:

Cost = ( ( enemy gold + 1000 ) / ( distance + 3 ) ) x citysize

The distance is also influenced by the following factors:

Courthouse in city: halves the "distance"

Enemy government is Communism: max. "distance" is 10

Enemy has no palace: "distance" = 32

And the following cumulative modifiers apply to the cost for bribing:

City in disorder: -50%
No units in city: -50%
City was previously yours: -50%
Spy (rather than diplomat) is bribing: -16%
Veteran unit is bribing -33%

Hope this helps

I certainly do. I have a question in mind for the next poll: Has Civ2 (or Civ1) compromised your productivity? I will put the new poll up tonight if I have time.

Andu, bribery cost is explained in the Scroll of Wisdom: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ2scrolls.shtml#Bribery

I think that anybody who visits a site called "CivFanatics" would answer yes at that question, Thunderfall.. Put it like this instead:

How bad has Civilization affected your productivity?

- nothing
-
- (put some different grades in between)
-
-
- my life is ruined

Anyway, Thunderfall, that's a good question and as you haven't posted it, I'll kindly do it for you. No, no, don't thank me, it's normal

My life is ruined, because I've become a dehydrated evil dead zombie who lacks sleep because of Civ.
