I bought Civ IV this morning, hoping that it would work on my laptop (it's a good laptop, I stomp everything but T&L) and it doesn't work well.

It loaded up, which was promising. Even let me play the game. But it was laggy and had lots of blackness where the map should be. And no, it's not fog of war or that my settlers haven't discovered a spot on the map.

Time to go buy a desktop just to run Civ --- and for the hell of it, I'm going to buy a $3,500 machine that will stomp it into the ground.

Don't spend that much...Dell has some very good online deals now...as does HP.

i brought an extra gig of ram for my baby :D

1.5 gb of ram now.
should run it like a charm (radeon X850XT series graphics :D)

I have the T&L qualification on my laptop but had trouble running Pirates. I am praying that this is not the case with Civ4. I have a decent Desktop but my wife will kill me if I sit down for the next month on the computer and game.

What is T&L??

My computer should run it (1g RAM and radeon 9550) but as I don't know what T&L is, I don't know if I have it :P

3,500 dollar computer? You'd better be getting SLI GF 7800's and a widescreen monitor for that.

Well, I hope that since i ran Pirates! flawlessly my machine is a fluke and runs civ 4 well otherwise I get to go buy a crappy pci card just for t & l...

P4 2.9 HT
1256 Ram
865G(or GV) integrated chip

If you buy dell beware! I didn't and they only gave me a pci slot (bastards)

Transform & Lighting. It's essential for many games to run. I never expected the game to react otherwise, ratkin.

And how do I know i have it or have the proper version or whatever :P so I can run the game?

You get what you pay for. (Something some people just don't get.) Just make sure you can upgrade the CPU/RAM/GPU and have at least 2 free PCI-E slots and I'd drop that kind of cash.

Radeon 9550? Yeah, you have T&L. It stands for Transform and Lighting, and usually refers to a hardware implementation. Basically if you have something better than a GeForce2, you're set (cross-manufacturer comparisons will be a little more tricky...but basically if you have something within the past 3 years, you're most likely good).

Sounds like an Alienware Rig....Yummy.

I too don't have a T&L capable video card.
1. The leaders don't show up at all except for eyes and teeth.
2. Warriors were visable on map as well as some resources, but no actual landscape. Just blackness everywhere. Even the ground under the units.

I have a video card that meets the reqs but I have to install it. I think my current video card is integrated with the motherboard and is a p.o.s.

Also the game seemed to be slow to respond. Could that be video card related or just RAM and processor problems? Might have to get a new computer.

That is so true.

BTW, My point was that he can get a great deal on a top end machine right now at those sites...most likely get a top of the line model without having to spend that much.

Are there any graphics settings that I can change in the game? Have you tried fiddling with the graphics options at all? I have a Intel 915... it's a quality graphics card on a new machine, it just doesn't support T&L.

I don't play games except CIV and occasionally freecell, but I've played CIV since the original. Frankly, CIV doesn't need to be that graphics intensive a game... it's turn based for god's sake! I will be pretty upset if I can't run the game tonight.

Alternatively, what's it going to cost me to upgrade my laptop?

Does anyone knows whether the ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 on my laptop will run the game?
