TJS1 -- Going on the Pill-age

Well, indeed... :mischief: -- But come on, they didn't take 700 years... :crazyeye:

:rotfl:

Robbus, don't worry about the time. Some turn sets go quickly, others don't. Better to play at a comfortable pace than to rush through the set and miss bunch of things (oops, I didn't deal with the landing last turn, now our capital belongs to the Aztecs!).

I am still working on my turnset diary but it took me one hour for 2 turns so it might be awhile!

The executive summary is that I initially retreated from Novgorod because we had some damaged units there. I healed them while waiting for reinforcements. I mobilized knights mainly for defence. Somewhere along the way spearman joined defence. All available workers were mobilized to irrigate then mine Stavanger hills. I rush a granary in Stav for 136 g which is probably a waste.

I negotiated RoP with dutch and Dow by Dutch against Russia for silks and some cash (16gpt?) after our trade agreement lapsed in 260 or 270ad.

Down south Aztecs landed 1 then 2 units near yekta which were defeated by horsemen from the north. The Aztecs continue to send galleys towards us and have unloaded troops. The galley that I let slip by which is now south of tromso has not landed troops so might have something on board. I have workers chopping around reyk one of which should have been roading towards tromso.

Up north I reinforced horsemen, beat back a archer/maceman counterattack (with some loss of life...) and assaulted Novgorod capturing a bunch of workers. Through bad moves I managed to let 3 escape and delay access to iron for a turn probably.

By this time Stavanger is at full capacity and I am roading hills to Novgorod iron. Other cities are being worker expanded and Lux slider is inching upwards to counteract WW.

The oslo/yekta worker factories are MM to continue 2works/2turns.

Birka starts producing 'zerks but I shoulda' produced a harbor there earlier for food. ( I am seeing how rax/harbor interplay is and the importance of food).

The west was lost on me . I had no strategic vision there and other than moving a city (which was completely coached by the team!), I really had no idea about micromanagement there.

For the future my plan would be to upgrade horses to knights with Iron and cash. Load up our galleys with zerks and go after arabia

Overall I think I gained a new appreciation for empire management and learned from my mistakes.

I think my mistakes (not exploring arabia, building gran in Stav, workers/slaves lost due to indecision and inattentiveness) cost President Ragnar of the Viking republic at least 2 turns of progress overall. Given that we are depending on Berzerkers which will be up against a stiff challenge from musket men and given that one civ has Knights Templar there are still challenges ahead.

I am not ready for Sid level just yet!

I welcome any further critiques you may have based on my saves .

Here are my notes. This is my first time doing this. My written notes are confusing me! I have tried to piece things together up to 330ad. Too tired to finish right now.

Spoiler viking 250ad-3320ad :

250ad

redline kill russian settler spear with knight/ horse. Move knight towards novgorod. move troops toward novgorod to reinforce.

move redline jungle horse to stack cover near novgorod.

IBT

stockholm makes court starts horse.

Russia attacks stack archer kills horse with archer russian horse killed. second archer appears in jungle ne of novgorod. medinf crosses river to plain square south of iron.

260AD

retreat novgorod stack to jungle s of novg

worker joined to cope and turned into taxman to maintain order.

heal redline units in stav, workers to finish mines then will irrigate stavanger

multiple worker moves

IBT:

2aztec galleys appear.
Arabia and dutch sign peace
We lose silks
We negotiate with dutch RoP,DoW vs russia, 16 gpt (from us) for furs.
russia archer attacks and loses to horse, russia medinf attacks horse, horse retreats second russia archer attacks horse, horse wins and becomes elite.

270ad

I hurry stavanger granary for 136g. (wasted gold I quickly found out).
At some point I increased lux slider to keep workers joining cities happy.

I irrigate stavanger.

A bunch of worker moves

IBT
aztecs want peace,I decline. 2 aztecs galleys menace east coast.

280ad
birka produces aqueduct and switched to zerk. Stav produces gran and switched to horse.

A bunch of worker moves . I have been reinforcing/healing our depleted novgorod force with horsemen as they are produced.Move knights toward novgorod to act as defense of stack. I am starting to move towards novgorod which is reg spear defended. When workers are available will start roading towards novgorod.

I attack aztec galleys and sink both but take some hits. This was risky but it worked. I was scolded for this by the team (and rightly so). I sheltered galleys to heal. No more blocking (which I wasn't clear on anyway)

Move a couple of horses south to repel. any aztec landing parties aroundTrond Cope Or Reyk. There is still one galleySE of cope with all galleys in harbor.

IBT
yekta and oslo produce workers. Shields harvested from chops to stockholm. karasjok produces spear switched to galey in future.

Dutch send a lone spear towrds moscow.

Stav now at 10 and being mined.
trade 15gpt for silks with dutch

IBT

dutch spear defeats russian horse.

dutch building suntzu and knights templar.

310ad

start irrigating birka for food to grow but probably should be building harbor and leaving mines alone. Instead zerks are being built slowly in birka.

Settler disband Yaroslavl and move towards townsite suggested by Lanz.

IBT

330ad
vadso founded

IBT

Other cities are being worker expanded and Lux slider is inching upwards to counteract WW.
We didn't lose any towns and not so many units yet, so I hope we still have war happiness from Russia?!

Given that we are depending on Berzerkers which will be up against a stiff challenge from musket men
No one should have Gunpowder yet?! And I think, many don't have iron, so hopefully we'll be up mostly against Spears.

This is the turn order, right?

Robbus -- Just Played
Elephantium -- Up
Choxorn -- On Deck
Lanzelot
tjs282
Nathiri

Not exactly sure, where on the turn order I am located after my "forward skip", in the original spot or in the spot I last played (which is basically Speedbird's spot)?!

I thought tjs had Lanz in the original spot after robbus/or before, unless Lanz wanted to be counted as already played, but robbus wanted to be before Lanz.

https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/tjs1-going-on-the-pill-age.612783/page-24#post-14768595

is original order.

I requested to play before lanz here:

and here
https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/tjs1-going-on-the-pill-age.612783/page-26#post-14773786

I took hand off from Nathiri....

I think Lanzelot is our current president.
Hope this helps.:)

I'm not sure whether I'm up or Lanzelot is.

I'm also not sure what our team priorities are for the next turnset.

For myself, it would be: Get Birka up to size 12, then launch the GA by deploying Galleys of Zerks against Russia; send them North from Kufah.

Actually, I should add: Get Worker gangs optimizing terrain improvements in our core. T'heim is getting +3 fpt at size 12 with irrigated tiles; we might as well mine those!

etc...

I am confused myself...

This is the original order from post #1:
  1. tjs282 (CET, UTC +1 hour)
  2. Nathiri (EST, UTC -5 hours)
  3. Lanzelot (CET, UTC +1 hour)
  4. Robbus (EST, UTC -5 hours)
  5. Elephantium (aka 'Tusker') (CST, UTC -6 hours?)
  6. Choxorn (WST, UTC -8 hours)
  7. Speedbird 95 (WST, UTC -8 hours) -- Retired

I played in Speedbird's place, then tjs282 got a skip because of vacation(?), so Nathiri played, and then robbus, because I just had shortly before.
@tjs282: just make a decision whether to keep me in Speedbird's spot from now on or whether to (try and) switch back to the original order. I'm fine with anything.

  • Let Yekaterinenburg grow to 5 (by rushing Galley next turn). :mischief:
  • Upgrade all Horsies to Knights and take Russian dyes and ivory. With 4 luxury resources we should be fine, even if we get WW.
  • We have already 10 Berzerks and 8 Galleys! Send 5 Galleys to the Byzantine coast via the Russian coast... Try to sign an MA with Carthage, once we declare against Byzanz.
  • Prepare a second fleet in Yekaterinenburg and go along the Dutch coast, once our Knights come back from Russia. (The fleet may raid the Aztec coast a bit, if the Knights take longer...)
  • Some elite units can do leader farming with the Aztec landings and at Kufah. (With 2 upgraded Spearmen, we can even send a small party a bit inside Arabia. But don't get sidetracked: there is nothing of interest in Arabia.)
  • Aarhus, Stavanger, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Bergen need Markets now.
  • Bring Trondheim to 20spt
  • Strange that Stavanger has 5 corrupted shields?! Perhaps a Courthouse is in order there? Could be worthwhile during GA.

So top prios for now are the Russian luxury resources, Pyramids in Constantinople (though it already got a bit late for them to be useful), Lighthouse in Amsterdam, Oracle in Tenochtitlan and Hanging Gardens in Carthage.

Short post cos i'm using the wife's Smartphone. As far as i'm concerned, chox's post gives the current turn order. Holiday's going great, looking forward to playing when i get back... ;-)

OK ... impeach Lanzelot! Tusker for Prez!

I am trying to be funny here but here is Chox's order

Robbus -- Just Played
Elephantium -- Up
Choxorn -- On Deck
Lanzelot
tjs282
Nathiri

Lanz' is OK with this, so am I.

BTW: I welcome any critiques of my turn by turn moves... Just contact me directly , Thanks.:)

Thank you, robbus. As my first act as President of this great Republic, I hereby pardon Lanzelot. We have struggled through difficult times, and we as a people need to move on and put the scandals behind us!

Midset report (okay, most-of-set report):

Pre-turn:

Vadso switched to Barracks.
Reyk switches to Galley. It wastes 10 shields -- why the hell were we building a military unit without a Barracks in the first place?!
Switch Tromso, Odense, and Bodo back to Settlers.

Why were they changed in the first place? I haven't seen any notes on this!

Alesund steals the Sugar from Stockholm for faster growth.
Yekaterinburg changes tile assignments to give the watered grass to Birka. Switch to Galley.

Again, why hasn't anyone done this for the last 20 turns?! It's been mentioned NUMEROUS times.

... Okay, breathing again.

There were two Horsemen in Stavanger. Why haven't they been moved  I send them to help guard against landings -- they'd be helpful in Russia, but our core is a little too lightly defended.

IBT:

Russia wants straight peace. We decline, of course.
Russia kills a Dutch unit near Moscow; Dutch kill a russian unit near Yakutsk

Reyk: Galleys.
Molde: Horseman > Zerk

T1:

I kill 1 LB with eHorse and 1 redlined Horse with vHorse. No promotions.

IBT:

Trond: Harbor > Zerk
Bergen: Zerks
Oslo: Workers
Stockholm: Zerks
Stavanger: Knight > Zerk

Adrianople completes Art of War.

T2:

Kufah: We lose eArcher attacking Arab Archer.
Two Knights wipe out the attackers. One promotes to elite.

Short-rush Marketplace (Mkt) in Birka; we need a Harbor there ASAP, too.

Basically everyone has Theology, but we don't care.

IBT:

We lose a Russian slave that we had captured last turn (a Horseman came out of the fog to recapture him).

Copenhagen: Zerk > Mkt
Yekaterinburg: Galley > Worker
Aarhus: Galley > Mkt

T3:

eKnight kills Archer at Kufah
eHorse kills Horse at Vadso
Knight recaptures Worker
Knight kills LB near Vadso

Since I set some Mkt builds last turn, I make sure that all our big cities have Mkt builds: Only Trond and Reyk had them already.

IBT:

Reyk: Galleys
Oslo: Workers
Odense: Settler > Galley
Alesund: Horseman > Pike *
Tromso riots due to the Aztecs *finally* moving their Galley!

* Can anyone explain why sometimes builds get auto-updated to the new unit while sometimes it finishes the existing build?

T4:

Move troops, quietly. I'm still wrangling Workers in advance of starting the GA.

IBT:

Russia sends a Horseman next to Novgorod
Dutch lose 1 LB to Russian LB

Yekaterinburg: Workers ** (this city needs MM every turn!)

T5:

Knights invade Russian North! They move into position outside St. Petersburg to seize the Ivory.

IBT:

Trond: Zerks
Novgorod: Worker > Barracks
Oslo: Workers

T6:

I settle Farsund, S-SW of Bodo.

Battle of St. Petersburg:
Knight gets redlined in the initial assault but kills the Spear!
Knight dies on a Spearpoint!
Knight rides down LB and promotes to Elite!
Knight smashes redlined Spear and takes the city :king:

IBT:

Aztecs land 2 units by Trond and then die to our Galley
Russian LB kills Spear by Novgorod

Yekaterinburg: Workers
Reyk: Galleys
Stavanger: Mkt > Zerk

T7:

eHorse and vKnight kill 2 Russian LBs by Novgorod
vKnights kill Horse and Jaguar next to Trond

IBT:

Aztec Galley suicides on our Galley near Birka
Oslo: Workers
Birka: Harbor > Galley
Hareid: Horse > Court
Tromso: Settler > Harbor

T8:

Quiet turn -- I'm just moving troops to heal and Workers to their next jobs.

IBT:

Dutch want to sell Theology for 910 gold. Sorry, buddy.
Bergen: Mkt > Zerk
Yekaterinburg: Worker > Aqueduct
Stockholm: Mkt > Zerk
Karasjok: Harbor > 'duct

Carthage is building Copernicus!

I also see that multiple AIs have Gunpowder :(

T9:

Risor founded in the south.
eKnight kills LB in the north

Okay. It's time for the GA!

We raid Ixtapaluca:
Zerk wins flawlessly!
Second Zerk razes the city (I chose raze instead of capture because I don't want the headache of defending the town).

Krasnoyarsk:
Zerk kills Spear
Zerk kills Spear
Horseman kills LB and takes the town. This one I captured because we're pushing towards Moscow.

Bryansk:
Two Zerks kill two Spears and take the city (this one is a little sketchier; reinforcements from Rostov could make this tricky. However, we DEFINITELY have a turn's grace period before a counterattack can be mounted).

I pause here to post the save and show the GA-specific layout of our cities.

Now is also the time to decide on a few key factors:

1. Oslo and Yekaterinburg -- keep pumping out Workers or grow to big cities? I think it's time to develop them since we're starting the "raid and pillage" phase.
2. Karasjok and Alesund. They could do well as size 12 cities, but they have enough shields to contribute right now. I set them up for growth, but they could go either way.
3. Molde and Hareid. With Courts, Harbors, and ducts, they'd be nice second-tier cities - but they won't really hit their stride until the end of the GA if we do that. Meanwhile, they already have Barracks -- they could build a modest number of units for raiding as-is.
