I was just wondering... When you see a buffalo, is it better to build on the buffalo or just have it in its territory? or any other resource

If you found on a special, a side effect is that there's no possibility (except by the dateline) to get another special in that city. If there's no possibility for another special anyway, I don't think it really matters. The city square is immediately roaded and irrigated, which sometimes is a must for early cities to be able to use a special at all.

There is a pattern in which specials appear. Just create a new "ocean-only" map and look at the specials. Try to visualize where you would place your city and which squares would be in its radius. (Hint: a city can only have up to 4 specials).

You probably have noticed that grasslands don't have specials on them, but that doesn't mean they don't exist at all. Try planting a forest (press 'M') on a grassland square that is likely to hold a hidden special. If the square is supposed to be a special (according to the pattern) it will either become a silk or pheasant.:)

To better know where the specials are, you can use SG's program Hutfinder, which will show you the location of specials and huts if you only give the location of one hut.

Just to save the inevitable question...Apolyton.net Civ2-strategy forum. The thread was last updated Nov. 2003 so you have to do a little digging.

Someone should check with SG1 before posting it here. There's also some discussion in that thread of how to deal with issues installing it on some platforms. If you're going to post it here, you should be prepared to handle those issues.

Is it possible to, in the download section, just add the link to that thread instead of a link to the file? I could dig it out this afternoon, if it'd be possible to do that.

BTW, I thought SG1 had passed away? Or am I confusing him with someone else?

SG[1] = Stu Wade = the author of 'Hutfinder'
SG(2) = Ivor Wason = one of the very best civ2 players of all times (the one who induced solo to try early landing on large maps)
They were from Liverpool and very good friends. They were also those who created the Great Library at Apolyton.
Ivor died last summer. May he rest in peace.
Stu is well alive and active civ2 player.

Building on the buffalo has advantages, and disadvantages. Advantages include having a higher tax base, shields, etc right from the get go. Disadvantage is that you can never maximize the food harvest from that source, as the game progesses. Ideally, you want to start every city on grasslands. If you can do so while having one, or up to the max of all four special resources, more power to you.

I like to build on spice squares as they give a huge trade bonus right from the off.

Having special squares only really matters to me at the start in normal cities. Though specials matter to me for my SSC.
