I remember asking this before a good while back, but i don't remember getting any real answer to it.

I understand the speed problems that the search option causes, but i was just wondering is it possible to have the search option available for just the C+C forums with the program you use, or is it all or nothing?

Its sort of essential for those forums as a lot of work gets lost and newer posters are always asking for units/graphics that have already been made.

New users are constantly asking for information all over the place, and I don't think it's possible to allow it for just one forum.

I'm pretty sure it is. Up until sometime last year people could search anywhere they wanted, including the whole site at once, the entire Civ3 section, etc; then Thunderfall made it so that you could only search one forum at once (by removing the sections from the drop-down menu). So I imagine he can make it so that you can only search one forum.

Even if it is possible to enable search for only specific parts of the site, why do it for just one area? It would be unjust to everyone else to say that one forum deserves the search function more than everyone else...

Thats the point of the Unit forum directory (which I just updated a couple days ago);)

It would also be helpful in the main C&C forum. Also, there are about two threads a week about where BMP2BIC is, because it doesn't have it's own thread....

Not really; it's hard to argue against the fact that searching is more important in C&C forums than anywhere else.

The C&C forums do have partially assembled file directories, as well as specific forums for specific categories of files. General Discussions on the other hand, and in some cases OT have posters opening new threads for things that have been covered multiple times already...

I don't think any forum should have search while the rest don't, the only one I would consider 'vital' to the Civ community would be the C3C bug forums...

Thorough content listings in stickied threads (already partially assembled) in the C&C Forums would do just as well as enabling search (if not better, in the cases of threadless items).

It's all or nothing. Sure, I can remove all other forums from the searchable forums list, but there are other places (ex. the search button above each post, the "Search for all posts by this user" link in poster profile, the "View New Posts" link on the main forum page) that use the search feature.

It is still possible to do Google hashing (or whatever it's called), and run a search through the forums via Google. I *think* that's possible.

But it'd create huge traffic like once every week.

Why don't we just have stickied directories at the top of each thread that we update, and have links to threads that have answer to frequently asked questions? I understand we have one like that in C&C, maybe we could have them in all threads Civ related (kinda pointless in the "Collosuem" or "Other Games" Sections . . .

That's been tried, as you know. The problem is to maintain and keep them updated. Some people try to actually update it, but since Lab Monkey has left the forums, and the wonderful efforts of others seemed to come to a halt after a while, nobody actually seems to care about it anymore.

So, as MarineCorps puts it, "Googling" is the best solution :D

Lab monkey gave up because he had real life to deal with. The other two gave up when they found out that the mods were going to create a mod controlled or something like that libary. In the mean time to find something in the units forum check out the "unit forum directory" Has links to every thread in the forum.

I didn't "give up." I was told to stop (indirectly), and you created the directory, which destroyed the need for the library.

In the directory, use the "find in this page" or whatever it's called in your browser. It's quite helpful, as long as you know the unit name.
