i'm in the start of a china game and there are soo much unhappy pl complaining about crowdedness, its at liek 10 right now and i have to keep traning more soldiers for them (heriachy rule) to state order, how can i stop them form complaining (ironic how this is already a huge problem in certain states of chaina and hong kong), i dont want them to jsut eat food and sit around

*edit* ok uhh its growing pretty fast, i just want to know if toping the population and then imporving it will slow the process of unhappy people. you see its growing like 1 unhappy per 2/3 turns and its really annoying to keep them happy if all the buildings r built and there are no other nations in you contenent. again the issue here that is too many un happy people growign considerable fast

Unless your city has the Globe Theatre, there's always going to be complaints of overcrowding. But it's not a problem unless the unhappy citizens exceed the happy ones.

To address the unhappy citizens, either hook up or trade for luxury resources, build a Temple, Colosseum, Theatre, Cathedral (needs 4 temples in your Civ first), Monuments (if your leader is Charismatic). Certain improvements increase the effects of luxury resources--a Forge will double the effects of metals, Markets will double Ivory, Fur, Silk, and Whales.

If you're at war and have done significant fighting in enemy territory, you're going to be hit with War Weariness. Either build a Jail to combat it, up your culture slider, draw back your fighting, or end the war altogether.

If you're not able to address these issues, simply whip the city down to a manageable size and run Specialists to keep it from growing to the point where you can't manage it.

Slavery Sir!

Whip the lttle devils, reduce your population, build your buildings faster, cower the surviving population into brutalized acquiescence!

It works for me, Bruh-ha-ha!

Ah, the age-old question: how to keep the masses happy!

Religion is the opiate of the people. ( I just made that up! Can I copyright it?)

But seriously: you have hit up against one of the main problems: how to keep them happy. The other is: how to keep them healthy. Various buildings help. the monument helps, but you have to learn how to build it. A theatre helps, but you really have to know a lot to build one of those. Luxury resources help, and certain buildings make those luxuries work even better. Other buildings help food resources do a better job of keeping people healthy.

Hereditary rule is a crutch that doesn't solve the problem. Make them happy without needing troops, that's the key.

Good luck, and welcome to CIV!

on the city governor, click "avoid growth" when you have an equal number of happy and unhappy people. then after you have done things with increase the number of happy (temples, luxuries) you can uncheck it and let the population grow to the new limit.

opium, religeon is the opium of the people, not opiate, yea but i built all teh happy buildings and they still complain, but i like the slavery idea, kill those who dont work!

sry fro the constant posts but ideas keep coming up, doesnt slavery creat unhappy people? that beats the purpose of it doesnt it

Slavery creates 1 unhappy per use no matter how many people die. As long as you whip away multiple people then you have a net gain.

Theaters, only provide happy IF the culture slider is being used as well. The slider will add 1 happy/10% and the theater will add an additional 1.

The red people under the specialists on the lower right of the city screen are the actual unhappy people. There will be 1 unhappy person for each red face more than yellow face up by the hammer bar in the top center (below the food bar). Additionally factors may create additional unhappy faces but mostly it comes from population size. Either you must limit the number of people in the city, increase the number of yellow faces, or deal with the unhappy people consuming 2 food for no benefit. Unless you plan on using slavery the third option is not good and the second option can be time consuming and/or expensive. You are better off limiting growth once you are at or near your "happy cap", possibly leaving a few spare yellow faces to accomodate incendental unhappy (war weariness, loss of resources, stupid governer reassigning your people to food tiles, etc...).

HR is a an excellent stop-gap until you can get other forms of happy (calendar resources, drama, etc...). It lets you grow cities larger earlier and then gradually increase the happy/unhappy margin until it equals the number of soldiers at which point you can switch out of HR into a different government. Without pyramids there really isn't any other useful government option that early anyway, plus it helps keep your power rating up as well.

Early on if you don't have a grannery and accidentially go over the happy cap it isn't a terrible idea to starve them for a turn or two. Post-granery, however, this is NOT a good idea and you are probably better off whipping them or trying to get an additionally happy face.

I am reading this to mean that maybe you still don't understand the concept of these unhappy faces in the game. As was stated earlier, these unhappy faces don't ever go away... they are in the game to limit your city growth and create a challenge for you. All you ever need to do it make sure you have equal or greater number of happy faces. If you do this, the unhappy faces don't mean anything and are not doing anything to harm your civ.

The only time you can completely remove unhappy faces from a city is by building the Globe Theatre wonder (only allowed in 1 of your cities).

If you do let your unhappy faces exceed the happy, you will see a small red person in the lower right of your city screen. This means you have 1 citizen refusing to work but you still have to feed him (2 food per turn). It's not the end of the world, but you can see how it slows growth and becomes wasteful over time. Especially if you add more: if you have 2 extra unhappy faces vs. happy, you will have 2 red people (4 food wasted per turn).

Regarding slavery, if you whip away some population, yes you create unhappiness, but you have a smaller population in the city so the number of unhappy from overcrowding is reduced. It just depends on how many extra happy faces you have in the city. And the unhappiness from slavery goes away after 10 turns (normal game speed). The overcrowding unhappiness never goes away as I said, it just increases each time you grow your population.
