I'll be 18 on the 20th of March, and my dad (who plays Civ II but will soon be convinced to play Civ III) is 65 later this year.

Wow, I enjoy reading this thread. Didn't think that there is such a wide range of ages playing (and posting here, of course).

I am 38. Civ 1 (PC) was my first computer game ever and I played it until Civ III came out.
I tried a few other games but always seem to come back to civ. Only other game that is soo addictive is SMAC, IMO.

I also introduced my 10 years older partner to civ. Was fun to watch him trying to get to grips with my Civ 1 German version (he did not speak any German). Now at least he has a German vocabulary consisting of all the city improvements.
He now is hooked to SMAC and we regularly fight for the use of our PC.
Sorry, I'm rambling.

Great poll.

Well, TF has posted, just not his age. ;) He may have voted on the poll, too. CT and Hippo may have voted, too.

In case you're interested
  • Thunderfall is almost 23
  • Chieftess is 26
  • Cunobelin of Hippo is 18
(These are available just by clicking on their profiles and doing a little basic math. ;) )

And by the way, since I'm an old programmer myself (yes, I remember cards and paper tape), I *love* the reminisences here, but let's try to keep this on topic, okay? :)

Hey folks,

Just wanted to chime in here...

As a player and fan, I've enjoyed reading the responses in this poll and reminiscing... as a marketer, even though this is a "self-selected" group of fanatics on this site, it's still an excellent peek into not only the demographics of Civ fans here, but why the games appeal to more than just the "core gamer crowd" of 15-25 year olds. Ahhhh, to have the infinite time of college years when I first got hooked on the original Civ, myself... hopefully I'll be playing "Civilization XVI" when I'm 81...

Civ is educational too. I was asked in a quiz recently where the ancient city of Persepolis was. Faster than anyone I said Persia. The historians couldnt understand why I knew it so well.

Hi, Jeff!

Nice to see someone from from Infogrames in here. ;) (I keep hearing newbie questions like "Does Firaxis/Infogrames even know this site exists? Do they pay any attention to us?" I tell them I see Firaxians here often, and I've seen you on several times, too. :) )

I've actually been pleasantly surprised by this poll. Most of the age polls I've seen have been quite heavily skewed to the "core gamer crowd". Maybe it's the way the poll was titled ("Too Old to Play") that prompted more of us "oldsters" to post. I've always known I wasn't the only "old fart" here, but this poll was a revelation! It does show the broad appeal a good game can have, and the discussion has shown a lot of the "whys", as well. Good knowledge for a marketer to have. :)

BTW, I noticed you didn't actually post your own age. I'll leave it as an "exercise for the readers". ;)

:D

It's so nice to see that most of us here are older then 14. And not that I have anything against 14 year olds... :p

Nah, I have really met some Mature 12-14 year olds here on this site.

(These are available just by clicking on their profiles and doing a little basic math.
Except that in the case of the old farts, the year is always displayed as 1969. ;)

Well, yeah. :p

That is, of course, an error in the code for the profile handler.
At least you know that anyone with a birthdate of Dec 31, 1969, is at least 33 years old. :)

I'm 13, going 14, and I've got CIV3. Great game! It was CivNet, which started me off when I was 8-9 years old! Honest! Got it as a free package with a new pentium 133 PC. 133MHz was new at that time, and CivNet was the best thing going for me, I just loved them tanks.

I still have memories of taking over the Zulus in South America, and building cities all next to eachother to fit as many in as I could, and wondering why they all starved...That taught me the basics, and Civ2 followed soon after! CIV3 is definately the star though! I actually bought a new second hand PC to play CIV3 with!! Saved up TONS of pocket money!! It's worth it!

I am 50. My wife says she is glad that I am at home (playing Civ3 or SimCity 4) where she can keep an eye on me ;)

Hmmm. tried that line on my wife and she didn't but it.. Says playing games is a waste of time. I should be watching SitComs on TV. NOT>

My boyfriend is exactly the same way. Wants to pry me off the computer so I can watch TV with him. As you said ... NOT. ;) But otherwise, he's nearly perfect. :)

And I'm 33.

This is a great one... and please don't mind if I borrow this excuse from you. ;)

I'm 31 and have been playing since '97. It's a great way to relax after a long day especially after the hour drive home. I get the take out my frustration on any civ that will get in the way!

I've been in trouble lately about this. However, I must admit I played about 8 hours Saturday and 6 Sunday, and then another 4 Monday before the doody really hit the fan. Now I'm trying to sneak a few hours here and there while she is in the shower, etc. Tough to get very far that way.

I am, um, 45. The "um" is because after a certain point, you have to stop and ask yourself questions like, "What year is this," or "Let's see, what was I on the most recent birthday?"

Been playing since the first few months DOS Civ was out. I was working long hours then, plus bicycling long hours. A friend had recently handed down a 286 (with 16 MHz clock speed, awesome!) to me. I'd started to get bored with Sim City. One Friday after getting paid I browsed the local computer store shelves for anything new and interesting. Last stop was the games department. Picked up Civ because it was just barely the right price point (under $40) and sounded like it would be interesting -- IF it came close to fulfilling the promise of its description. Big if. I was not a reader of game magazines or game reviews. Didn't have the time or money for that. I literally slept all of two hours between that Friday evening and going to work Monday morning. The rest of the time I was at the keyboard, playing without looking at the manual or the tutorial because that made it more interesting.

When was that? Twelve years ago? Seems like ages.

These days, I still play Civ 3 quite a bit (and a little Civ 2), haven't messed with PTW multiplayer yet because I find buggy software annoying (funny statement from a QA person, lol) and am married to the author of the manual for Civ 2. Which remains to this day the best manual I've ever seen for a computer game, and broke new ground for games. And yes, that same wife who I adore loves to play Civ whenever she gets a chance.

You could say I love the game so much, I had to marry the manual's author!
-Freaked

PS Any Firaxians reading this who remember the author of the Civ 2 manual and wish to say hi, you can reply to this post and I'll get an email and will let her know. She still talks about some of you guys pretty fondly. :->

Unless, as you already know Col, you are playing recent GOTMs. Some city names may be educational in a non-historic sense ;)

Now that has got to be the biggest statement I have seen on this site for a while.

Freaked is a real civfanatic :D

I agree.

Civ2 has the best manual of any game I've ever had - and I've played a lot!

:goodjob: Mrs Freaked.

Well I'm 60 and I've only been playing for 3 years. If we had had Civ 3 when I was growing up, I probably would have died from looking at the computer screen too much. Alot better than playing with dolls of German soldiers frm WW1 and WW2.
