I am real envious! I have lost many myself due to my gaming.

I wondered what the average age was for playing civ3 this poll is perfect. Glad it was posted. It is interesting to see the various ages.. It is disturbing a little with the younger members who kick my butt in the game though :mischief:

You know, this game got a larger young audience after conquests came out, if the poll was accurate enough.

My ten year old kicks .... on chieftain with a little help. He wants to play in SGs. i told him he may, when he beats chieftan before year zero. :)

I'm seventeen, will be eighteen in January.

Then again, I'm not an all out civ-fanatic. I used to play RTS a lot, and purchased civilization 3 because I love micromanagement, and wanted to be able to take my time and really plan things out. I have only completed one game of civ3, on warlord. I generally start new games, play them for a while, then (owing to my short attention span), I quit them to start a new game with different settings.

There is one little problem with this poll: the results will be getting wrong with the poll in progress. Just because even players are getting older and someone who has voted for "21-30" 1.5 years ago would have to vote for "31-40" these days.;)
So what about a poll where you can vote for the year of your birth? That could be a poll for eternity.:D

My nine year old is the same way. With a little guidance here and there (which he reluctantly accepts), he can kick some butt on Chieftain.

BTW -- I'm 36.

If you can curl your knurled fingers around the mouse, and click the buttons without having arthritis pains cause you to pass out, you are NOT to ald to play  :twitch:

I'll be 45 two days after Bush is kicked out of office, and I've been playing since the original Civ came out, which was, um, what? 1989? Some of these kids weren't even born yet!

I am 41.. My 8-year old started on civ II when he was five and has played civ III on Regent against the AI and never loses, he prefers top play either the Greeks, Roman or Germans, depending on his 'mood' I also enjoy hot seat multiplayer against him.. he often makes me work at it.. And his sense of history, geography and military tactics are far superior to any area 3rd grader.. (when he runs out of city names for a country, he grabs my atlas to find more names, can't think of too many pre-teens willing to open up an atlas willingly) He sets his alarm on Saturday mornings so he can beat me to the computer in the morning..

There should be more kids out there like yours, the usual games that they are playing now (Cs and other shoot and kill games) are not good for them, makes em stupid.

While I do think Strategy games are always a good idea, saying that all FPS will make kids stupid is an unfair generalization. All this is entertainment, and you could easily claim that Civ distorts a kids perception of history. Besides, properly played MP games teach team-work and communication skills. Its why America's Army was published.

@Thorfin39
If he likes the history component, there may be a game for both of you. Have you ever heard of the Total War series? If not, the TW series are games based historically on certain periods (Shogunate Japan, Medieval Europe, etc.). You command as king, but be wary of jealous family members and generals. YOu also have to worry about regionalism and loyalty of far off provinces. WHen it comes to battle, you command 100s of troops to victory or defeat in a very realistic tactical mode.

I thought 1992, which would mean I've played this game since before some were born, and I'm only 20!

I just looked it up at the official site: it was 1990 (so we were both close). I first played it (a bit slowly) on an ancient IBM XT box, which is still sitting in my basement wrapped up in a garbage bag.

:bump:

Well, I am not into hardware, but when I first saw Civ I running it was in a IBM PS/2... it was the only PS/2 I saw or heard of.

I'm 35 this year. only started playing a year and a half ago. My younger bro and dad have been playing for a few years now. My brother is 30 and my dad is 71.
