Tornadoes

We have had exactly one (very small, three minute touchdown) tornado in our city (very southern California) in the last twelve years.

Here in missouri, right in tornado alley, we get several or tens of them a season. I have never seen one, though. Typically, they come at night or late afternoon. Even if they are close by you may not see one.
When I was younger a big one came through only a 3-4 city blocks from my house. Completely destroyed several houses and damaged tens more. Realistically, I have more fear of hail damaging my car than total destruction from a tornado.

Look on the bright side of things. I read an article saying that though the ocean is hot enough to form hurricanes already, the atmospheric conditions causing the recent spate of tornadoes is preventing the formation of hurricanes. So as long as we have these tornadoes wrecking everything in their path, hurricane season won't start this year. Well, I guess this wouldn't make those in tornado alley very happy but it'll make people in Florida and other coastal regions happy
