Up until today when ever I read about torpedo boats from the late 1800's I always pictured the modern torpedo boats, but today I rembered something: What we call mines now a days they called torpedos in the 1800's, so I'm wondering were the torpedo boats 0f the 1800's mine laying ships or was I right in thinking they were like the torpedo boats of now?

I think what thinking of is that they used to call land mined land tropedos. A random fact related to this that that destroyers were orignally called Torpedo Boat destoryers.

the modern torpedo was invented in 1868, so the torpedo boats of the 1880's carried a primitive ( comparted to today )torpedo. the french were the big users of torpdeo boats as it was a cheap way to counter englands huge lead in battleships. as constantine said, the british countered with torpedo boat destroyers, which involved into destroyers.
