after finally winning my first game with an altar victory and religion oriented troops, i'm ready to try delving into the magic system. i figure if i'm going to go heavy magic, i may as well try for a tower victory next; domination and conquest have been done so many times in base civ anyway.

having a hard time searching out the answer to this though, too many entries for every query i think of: do you need all 16 mana types at the same time? (and if so do you generally get them by founding holy city shrines or am i missing something as there don't seem to be that many magic nodes around usually and haven't seen many AIs with mana they were willing to trade though they always like to ask for mine). Or, do you just need to control them long enough to build each of the lesser towers, then once you have the 4 towers you can build the ToM regardless of what mana types you control?
 
Which mean keep one raw mana node until you researched Sorcery. This tech gives you access to Metamagic. Which you need for the level two Metamagic spell "Dispel Magic". That spell can destroy Mana Nodes and reverts them back to raw nodes.
 
Also keep in mind that the turn you start building the ToM that every other AI not currently at war will declare war against you. Stockpile an engineer or two plus a ton of cash and you can rush build it in one turn.
