TR01 - Help a loser out

Sorry guys, been away from the board a few days. Just upgraded to DSL. Got the save, will play it out later.

0) 650: Open embassies with Japan and Persia. Pay Japan 225 for an alliance vs. the Americans. I think we can handle the Russkies. Bingol switched to settler. Rushed sipahis.

1) 660: Washington builds the SoZ--isn't it already obsolete? Izmit switched to galley. Making sure no one is in Russian space, we declare on them. Tunceli founded between Kafa and Sinope.

2) 670: Boston builds lighthouse. Novgorod falls. Sivas founded.

3) 680: Egypt allies w/Japan vs. America. I turn lux up to 10% as a couple cities are in danger of revolting. Army takes Yaroslavl with minimal damage. Capture 2 slaves, put them to work roading. Do what was suggested, rush court in Istanbul, then switch to Sipahi as it will get done on the same turn.

4) 690: Lost a sippy to a musket, but Vladivostok is taken. An American warrior shows up near Yaroslavl. Is this the best they have? In taking Smolensk, a leader is produced. We capture Moscow and Leonardo's! Istanbul switches to Epic. Not sure whether to have our leader rush the academy or build an army, decide on army. Switching from PTW to C3C and back can get confusin' sometimes.

5) 700: Army built in Novgorod. Resistances crushed everywhere except Smolensk and Moscow. Units moving on to St. Pete.

6) 710: Army takes St. Pete barely breaking a sweat. A couple sipahi move off to take Yekaterinberg. Russians left with 3 cities--2 of them across American territory, the other on the island where the Egyptians are. I make peace, getting Krasnoyarsk + 110. Let's kill Abe first, then we can finish the Russkies. Philadelphia is taken, they had only a pike defending.

7) 720: I shouldn't have made peace with Russia. I thought I needed to concentrate on one at a time, but Abe has been a pushover. New York falls. San Fran falls, a couple sipahi are redlined. We take Seattle, which had a galley.

8) 730: Japan and America make peace. Be wary of the Japs. Yozgat built. Detroit taken. Army takes Washington.

9) 740: Edfu on the island is taken. Buffalo shows surprising resistance as two sipahi have to retreat.

10) 750: Boston is taken with the Lighthouse. Tokat built. Xerxes has silk to offer but wants way too much for it. If you think we need it, we could sell him some cheap tech since he's so far behind. We take Pithom and the Egyptians are no more.

Some of the edge towns have libraries, it is your option to sell them once they've expanded. Making peace with the Russians was a mistake. At this point it probably doesn't matter if we trash our rep. Will post screenie later.

And here's the screenie.

Good turns DBear! :goodjob:

Surely making peace with Russian wasn't nessesary...
We are simply rolling over AIs and next player can probably bring us a domination victory.
Also wouldn't make sense to build or rush epic in Istanbul...
With so few turns left to play we won't use it...

EDIT: And with all the money we have and Leo's in our possesion...
Just rush Sipahis and roll over Japanese.

Guess I'm left with clean up? :)

Question on the rushing CH -> sipahi:
If we rush CH with no shields in box, isn't that super expensive? How can we "save 80 gold" by doing that?

So, for my turns:
Finish off Americans.
Prepare/start attack on Japanese.

Anything else? What of the libraries in new towns? Turn them to taxmen or what?

Easiest way to do it probably. Build CH for 1 turn. Rush it next turn and immediately switch to Sipahi... You will have every 2 turn Sipahi for half the price of CH.

Kill'em all... Check F8 screen if we are close to domination limit it won't matter what you do

To elaborate, it's 80 gold cheaper to rush a CH and let the city's production finish the sipahi than to just rush the sipahi. It is awfully expensive if you don't have any shields in the box, though - one solution is to wait for a turn, but you can also either (a) disband an obsolete military unit or (b) rush something cheap (like a worker) at the expensive price, then switch to the CH and rush the rest of that at the cheaper price.

In this case, I doubt we have enough money to rush multiple sipahis every turn anyway, so might as well just wait a turn. But it's good to keep the other options in mind if you're in a big hurry.

Look at the picture attached... While in Golden Ages we are making whopping 678GPT... Enough to rush few sipahis if use CH trick. ;)

One comment for the next player..
I can see bunch of Sipahis spread across ex-russian and american towns.
If resistance is over convert all citizen to tax-men to starve and don't keep sipahis as Military Police... Way too expensive option...
Rush them to the frontlines... Even if city flips it can be re-captured by the next wave of sipahi's coming from our core cities.
We have few cities 20+spt. Just do as it's been said before
Build CH for 1 turn then rush it and switch to Sipahi.

I expect AEnigma to finish this game... We are at 53% of 66% needed for domination limit.

Well, it's been a loooong time since I've entered large scale war in Civ2, and this is my first in Civ3. It's almost fitting that since I got a bunch of anarchy turns that I get to play with some kick ass Sipahi :)

I didn't do a great job keeping a turn log. Too much action. I took down what I did, though, and here's the results:

760
Moved everything into place
Turned some ppl into taxmen

770
Took Houston
Prepping for Japanese takeover
Trying to get Jap to declare war.
Want to get 5 cities on one turn.

780
Took Chicago and Miami
Got Japan to Declare war on us :)
Tried GL farming with horsies. No luck (2 Longbow kills!)

IBT
A LBM redlined a sipahi.
Crusader on hill lost to LBM, lost 3 slaves.
Payback time next turn :p
Warring leads to palace expansion!
Built tower on right.
Let's hope we get the chance for the left one ;)

790
Took St. Louis
1 casualty in taking Kagoshima
Took Kagoshima
Took Nara

Russian MDI in the way of my warpath for Japan. Good enough reason for me to declare war on Russians...

Miscalculated, couldn't take Russian town.

IBT
Lost a Sipahi to Jap LBM

800
Losing track here.
Took a town or two.

IBT
Xerxes wants horses. I spit in his face.

810
Woot! GL from killing LBM outside Tokyo (This is the *ONLY* promotion that I've encountered this whole time, I think)! After taking tokyo, he went to lead a a Sipahi army.
Some other killings.

IBT
Some riots, etc.
Then...

WOW! Awesome!

The GA pumped out a ridiculous amount of Sipahi, especially when doing the CH rush trick. Got about 4-6 sipahi every 2 turns (or more).

Here are the save:

Congratulations!!!!

Great job guys!!! This is pretty cool to win your first SG. Turns out I got a domination win on COTM9 last night too. That was my first solo Monarch win ever.

Those siphai are awesome. For some of the other players that didn't get to play with them. Upload one of the last 3 saves and try them out. I don't think that I've encountered that dominate of a unit in the game so far.

And now for the obligatory smiles:
 :band:  :bounce:  :hatsoff: :salute: :hammer: [party]

Well played! I almost feel as if this totally passed me by... I didn't get to play with the Sipahi!

Neil.

Well done! :goodjob: That sure finished up quickly.

I wasn't very vocal in the past few days, but that's mainly because we were overrunning the AI's so quickly and you guys were having such good discussions that there wasn't much left for me to say. :D

I think a :thanx: is in order for dman for being our trainer, and for tubby for sponsoring this game.

Good game and thank you guys for all the fun..
We have an impressive 820AD victory that would definetely be in top 30 if it was COTM.. ;)

I hope i managed to show you that winning on Monarch is actually easy.

And to recap the strategy of winning on monarch:

meet opponents early and trade aggresively
expand fast
horses are better than swords in most ocasions
build 0 (zero) culture
marketplace is the most important build of AA
very few libraries are needed to outresearch AIs and self research MT.
Chivalry often is the last tech needed to win
do not build wonders
prioritize goals
learn to Micromanage (this is extremely important if you want to go above monarch level).

Have fun and i am sure solo monarch games won't be that hard any longer.

Thanks for all of the helpful info dman. And while Monarch is not "hard" anymore. It's still not too easy for me either. I think that I'll stay at this level for awhile to get used to the feel. I didn't win the COTM9 until 1876. I think that the late palace jump is what hurt me the most though. I definately won't get the fastest but I definately won't repeat my red ambulence award from COTM8. Thanks to dman, MM, & Veovim for the helpful info that helped me get to the point where I can win at Monarch :king: .

For the record, COTM9 is probably going to be a Domination win for me, sometime in the 14th/15th century. I won't be jumping my Palace anywhere.

Tangent:

For COTM9, how did you guys safely get past the giant ocean? I played a bit, then just didn't have time for it. I had some suicide galleys, and thus found land. However, I've been thinking about it, and you can't really safely go through oceans until Magnetism, right?

@Aenigma - since COTM 9 is still going, you probably shouldn't discuss it in much detail outside the official spoiler threads. Even what you said above is probably too much.

Anyway, good game, everybody. This was a lot of fun, even though I didn't get to do any of the actual fighting. Maybe that's what I get for telling you guys that I'm really a builder at heart.

And particular thanks to dman for being a great trainer. I have won a couple of Monarch solo games, but this breaks my best time by about 600 years. :)

Is anybody else interested in trying this again at Emperor? I'm not entirely sure I'm ready to try it solo, but I'd be up for an Emp. training game.
