TR04 - Losers vs 5CC deity

I think it's a prebuild for Newton's. Smith's isn't nearly as exciting with only five cities.
I think so too. But if we're gonna be doing more stealing than research soon, and turning research off, then Smith's might be more valuable than Newton's. I dunno.

Sorry for the late post, guys, something happened to my connection with the internets last night. We had some bad storms, maybe that's why...

Preflight (950AD)
Everything looks beautiful.

T1 (960AD)
Gonna get a granary in Varna, so we can squeeze out some workers. We'll get steam soon, and we only got 3 workers and 4 slaves.
(I) zzz

T2 (970AD)
Furs to Iroquois for WM, 67g, and 10gpt
(I) Granary for Caesarea, too.

T3 (980AD)
(I) The Spanish are building Newton's!!
Spanish finish Smith's.

T4 (990AD)
ToG in 1 @ +98gpt
Furs to Abu for WM, 1g, and 9gpt
(I) We get ToG, use scroll-between to get to Connie, switch to Newton's...

T5 (1000AD)
I can't get Metallurgy from anyone for anything, so I'll start the burn in.

T7 (1020AD)

T8 (1030AD)

T9 (1040AD)

T10 (1050AD)

That's it, there's not much to build or prebuild for, so I tried to squeeze out a few workers, 'cause hopefully Steam is coming soon. We couldn't trade for Magnets for anything less than our entire economy, so I burned into it, hoping someone else would get it and reduce the price. Didn't happen. We could trade for it now at a discount, or finish it in 3 turns.

Teh Save

So the world is Industrial and the AIs will be beavering away at Nationalism, Commienism, and Fascism. Ho hum. Steam->Medicine->Sanitation? Hospitals should be a priority.

I have it and will play tonight.
It's my turn ,right??? :)

Pre-turn. I'd like to have a little war with India.... It's been boring :-)
We are paying too much for unit support. Lets use all these units :-)

T1. 1060Ad. Declare on India. Raized Kolhapur and got us 2 slaves. SIgned Egypt and Inca into MA against Indians.

T2. 1070AD. Razed karachi

t3. 1080AD. Magnetism comes.. Crap... we get Nationalism are a free tech. Iro's and Spain both know Nationalism and Steam power. I decided to go for Medicine and use it for trade. Medicine in 17 turns at earliest :-(

T4. 1090AD Scraped some Dromons and older units to lower unit cost.

T5. 1100AD
T6. 1110AD. Sold chemistry to Inca for some 12 gpt

IBT. Iros and Spain signed MPP. Spain is building US

T7. 1120AD Sold Nationalism to Arabs for 39gpt+MT+35gold; Sold nationalism to Hittites for 7gpt. Cheap but they will get it from someone else if not from us.

IBT. Arabia and Egypt signed peace

T8. 1130AD. Science to 100% medicine in 8 turns
IBT. We lost incense and silks.

T9. 1140AD Sell Navigation to Inca for incense + 10gpt + some cash

T10. 1150AD Switch Nicaea to colosseum. Rest of cities are working on wealth. Caesarea will build worker next turn and grow back to pop 12. I hope we can use medicine in 12 turns to trade for Steam power. UPgraded couple of knights.

I am not sure if i did a right thing researching medicine instead of cheaper Steam power... but what's done is done and you can throw stones at me.
If we are lucky we can trade steam for medicine and go for electricity.
at some point we need to start ToE and Hoovers pre-builds. Please calculate that accordingly. We do neet hospitals, research times are killing us.

I think dman's been away from Civ a little too long. You just couldn't wait to start a war, could you?

Anyway, got it. I'll build some hospitals and see if I can get us railroads.

Good job dman, I was worrying about those Indian cities. It looks like the Iroquois city has a harbor so that town can start drafting rifles as soon as it reaches 7.

How about some Spies?

Sorry I haven't gotten this played yet; I was going to yesterday, but I was tired and didn't really feel up to playing Deity-level Civ. I'll get it done tonight.

Spies are probably a good idea. We don't have Espionage yet, right? I know the AI loves to research it, so hopefully we can pick it up in trade. I'll see what I can do. I've never really used spies, though, so I'm not entirely sure exactly how they work.

Just reading here when all of a sudden...

My wife just doesn't understand the level of concentration needed to co-ordinate the machinations of hordes of workers in their road/irrigate/rail sequence either.

 That is the funniest sentence I've ever read on CivFanatics, really cracked me up.

In 1170, our people are obviously tremendously impressed by the worker I just built, because they give us about ten palace improvements in a row. :crazyeye: I've never seen that before...

In 1190, an Arabian fleet, which I had assumed was carrying a settler, drops off a very scary invasion force (two horsemen) by Varna. I guess Abu wants out of the gpt he's been paying us. I don't really have much choice other than to ask him to leave, and he (of course) declares. So we're at war with the Arabs. We do get an elite cavalry out of the deal, though.

That puts our treasury in danger of going broke, but I discover that we've been shipping Spain horses and furs in exchange for just wines and figure we can do better. So I renegotiate, and Izzy is willing to throw 39 gpt into the deal. So that solves the budget crisis, at least for the moment.

In 1200, we receive word that Egypt has been destroyed by the Iroquois. Spain has most of the former Egyptian cities, though.

In 1210, Medicine comes in, and it looks like we have a monopoly. I trade Medicine to the Iroquois for Steam power and Hiawatha's entire treasury (1032 gold). It turns out that we have no coal, but Hiawatha has an extra and is willing to sell it to us for only 9 gpt. So we can build railroads, at least for the moment.

Spain has Industrialization, and is willing to give it to us for Medicine + 110 gpt. Ouch! But I do the math and decide that it will only slow down our run to Sanitation by two or three turns, and we really could use factories. Hiawatha wants 200 or so gpt for Ind, so we are getting pretty good value from Medicine here. So I decide to go ahead and pay it.

I order up a bunch of factories (well, OK, four) and set research to Sanitation at max (at -150 gpt, so we'll have to turn down science in a few turns).

In 1220, some gpt deal or other expires with the Hittites. I investigate the possibilities and discover that he's willing to give us 46 gpt for Medicine. I figure this probably increases the chances of another sneak attack down the road, but we can really use the money, so I take it.

My prediction comes true even sooner than I had anticipated, as in 1240 Mursilis drops off a knight and MDI next to Nicaea. I had seen the ships, but Isabella had a couple of fleets in the area, and the colors are so similar that I hadn't realized these were Hittites. I don't have much choice but to boot Mursilis, accept his declaration of war, and mop up his forces with a couple of cavalry.

In 1250, Spain declares war on India.

No screenshot, because nothing much has changed. Sanitation is due in 8 or so, but we're running seriously negative gpt, so it'll actually take longer.

It looks like I messed up the Hittite situation, as we got almost nothing for Medicine. :( Sorry about that. I guess trading techs to weak nations for gpt might not be such a good idea after all.

Note: We have some incoming Arabian bogies north of Constantinople; they're probably going to land somewhere between there and Nicaea. But there's only one galleon, so the ground forces shouldn't be anything we can't deal with. But it might be time to poull in some of the troops that are guarding the distant portions of our island.

Got it. Kill Arabs. kill Hittites.

lurker's comment: pre-builds for Theory of Evolution (constantinople) & Hoovers (Adrian)should be in order after the first couple of factories get built.

Also the fur trade with the Iroquois might be more valuable now that they have more citizens than when we made it. 13 gpt for a lux this late in the game is cheap...

One more thing then I'll shut up......All of our dromons are useless unless they are killing things right now. The age of sea-travel only is over and now we need big stacks of dromons bombing these incoming ships instead of just occupying our sea tiles.

GOt caught up in what was going on and ended up playing twenty befire UI realized. Makes up for being late I guess.

Set a trap for the Arabs and they walk right into it with a lot more troops than one or two, there are seven from a galleon and a caravel and four of them are attackers but no heavy defense (rifles or pikes)

Shift the dromon picket line north to deal with the Hitties and sink a Hittite Frigate and caravel in 1255.

Then shift some defenders around.

A knight takes an arrow then kills a Hittite cavalryman, no promotion. Another knight takes an arrow to the brain and dies to a spear. The remainder of the defense whittles the Arab landing force to a single cripppled spear.

Set a naval trap in the Gut between us and the Iro and the Hitite navy sails right in.

In 1260 finish off the Arab ExFor, and spew fire at the Hittite fleet but lack the firepower to sink it, so I block the coastal landing and hope they sail east into the teeth of the fleet.

Then make peace with India.

In 1265 sink the Hittite fleet but now have to face some more Arabs in the Pocket but they will also make a peace treaty so I collect 9g and call it good.

HIttites will make nice in 12809 after sinking some more of his ships so that's done and we collect 44g and some nice maps.

Factories are done in Connie and Adrian and I've been peeling off workers until I can get enough cash to make another run at Sanitation.

But I lose track of the budget and a barracks and a precious worker disappear.

Not much gets done until 1340 when Sanitation finally comes in and I sell it to Spain for 2846 (she will not even offer 1gpt). She is currently at war with the Iro and her unit costs must be eating her alive. She was doubtful on Electricity and I can learn that with her cash. Then sell it to the Iro for another 1088+20gpt. He too was doubtful of Electricity.

Start on Espionage at maximum science. Due in 11 @-130.

We are going to have to steal our way to heaven. Adrianople is building a Palace (due in 10) for the Intelligence Agency with Espionage due in 10. That may change due to population growth so keep an eye on it.

I built some cannons and disbanded an equal number of Dromons, or thereabouts.

The only peoples enjoying peace right now are the Arabs and the Byzantines. Everyone else is at war with at least one other nation. We have per turn deals with everyone but the pitiful Indians and I would stay away from them as they are down to two cities and at war with the Inca. The Spanish treasury is shrinking as they are pumping out the science dollars and fighting at war with the Iro and the Hittites.
