Well, I decided to translate Civ IV (and the expansion packs) to Portuguese. There is already a translation made by fans, but I don't like it and I'd rather translate the game myself.

Could someone be kind enough to point me in the right direction? Is there a tutorial that explains how to translate the game? I've checked a few of the XML files and noticed the language tags... I wonder that I would have to overwrite one of the languages, or is it possible to add a new language?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :goodjob:

Are you going to translate Civ4Col?

By the way, I suggest that instead of redoing from scratch, that you improve on the already-existing translation.

And I imagine that it is possible to create a new tag for it in the text files, yes, but I haven't personally checked.

Androrc, thanks for the suggestion. Do you know where I can find the most recent version of the Portuguese translation? I have a beta version that is probably outdated by now.

And, unfortunately, I don't have CivCol, so I can't translate it.

It is possible to add an additional tag for a new language instead of overwriting an existing one. And as it does not cause compatibility issues with mods, I'd highly recommend you create those new tags. The hungarian community translated civ4 very well, although there are very few things showing up as TXT_KEY_blabla. But there might be 10 or 20 short texts like that. Not very much considering how much of these texts portions exist in the civ4 files. I give you a link for the hungarian translation, so you can see which files you need to change and how. I'll update this post in a moment, please wait...

vanilla civ4: http://www.mediafire.com/file/ihmq43my2wg/bts_hun.zip
bugfix package (still doesn't fix everything): http://www.mediafire.com/file/ihmq43my2wg/bts_hun.zip
Warlords: http://www.mediafire.com/file/dan1mn5tmyi/c4w_hun.zip
BtS: http://www.mediafire.com/file/ihmq43my2wg/bts_hun.zip

known buggy text portions:
- TXT_KEY_HEALING_PLANT (event)
- TXT_KEY_EVENTTRIGGER_PASTURE_BUILT (event)
- ..._CONTROVERSIAL_PHILOSOPHER (event)
- TXT_KEY_REPLACED_BY_BUILDING (civilopedia)
(There are a few more buggy texts known. Those are all related to the 3 events mentioned above (like possible answers and explanations). I was not involved in the translation, but I think that those bugs have been caused by the 3.19 patch because some TXT_KEY_...'s have changed. Would be nice if you'd report other bugs if you find some when translating to portogues.)

BTW: I also recommend that you use the existing translation as base, otherwise it is a big job to do.
EDIT: even if the other translation doesn't use an extra tag for portugues, you might automatically create them via search and replace function of your editor. Then correct the texts themselves.

Awesome! Thanks for the links. (The vanilla and bugfix ones point to the BTS translation, but no problem).

I'll check the files this weekend and will start the project as soon as possible. I will report any bugs I find. I'll make sure to use the current translation as a base - I've noticed that there is a large number of texts to translate and the Civilopedia will surely require some extra effort.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
