Translations

I try to test some of the translations but this are not working.... I don't know what am I doing wrong. . . I put the sql (MapPins.sql for example) in the correct folder and I start the game but It's showing english. . .

Is that correct?

@Thalassicus: You might want to note the encoding needing. I was trying to edit the English translations all day. Turned out the problem was I needed to save it using ANSI encoding.

That does not solve the problem for me, I tried to change from UTF to ANSI unsuccessfully

Hi. I try translations with Civup 2.4.1. but not working. mod words are still en_US.
Link_Translations page is old. so, I see this thread and test following steps.

edit LANGUAGE option (Civup_Options.sql) # My LANG is JA_JP
create translations (Civup_Language.xls)
paste outputs to sql files (/Text_Bark/"LANG" directory) -> unworking

I also overwrite files in en_US -> unworking and I see "TXT_KEYS_???" characters.
Civup may have difficulty recognizing my multibyte code-set now.

The update today includes the first version of this new translation system. Civup and Gem each contain a Language.xml table in their mod folders. You can follow the instructions in post #1 to translate these files.

I estimate translating the project into a language would take about 30 minutes with the Google machine translator. I do not know how long it would take for a more accurate human translation. Human translation is obviously best if you can do that.

Did I spell the name of each language correctly:

Code | Language |
DE_DE|Deutsch|German
EN_US|English|English (US)
ES_ES|Español|Spanish
FR_FR|Français|French
IT_IT|Italiano|Italian
JA_JP|日本語|Japanese
PL_PL|Polski|Polish
RU_RU|ру́сский язы́к|Russian
ZH_CN|简体字|Chinese (Simplified)

Hi,

In Chinese, spelling is impossible to mess up. You either use the correct word or not.

In this case, 简体字 is understandable but very strange to my eye. I think you would be better using either:

汉语

or

中文。

The top one roughly means "Chinese Language," while the bottom one means "Central Language."

The distinction between the traditional and simplified characters is heavily politicized. As there is no current option for Traditional characters, I'm advising you as if the only release for this game was in mainland China as an imported title, and not in Hong Kong or Taiwan. Chinese language is not so simple as the government wants it to be! Since there is no traditional option, though, there is no real reason to specify simplified. Readers will immediately see the simplified characters and the lack of traditional characters.

I can't think of a corollary except perhaps the US and Mexico. If a title is written in Spanish, maybe you can pronounce it but not completely understand? So you pick in English instead.

Well, for a Taiwanese person or a Hong Kong person reading simplified, they will understand most of the characters, I think, but be slowed down by the differences, and perhaps confused by some different context.

Sorry if I'm not clear here. =(

ETA x 2

中文 seems like the most politically neutral term. It implies the language of the Chinese government as a tool for uniting a varied people, rather than claiming all those millions to have the same mother tongue--a misunderstanding that simply is not true.

So, in the next fuss with languages, I think 中文 is best. =)

Oh. God. Google translate is so terrible!!

@Johnny Deacon, nnk
Please attach your translated files so I can test them. :)

@sukritact
Are you certain you edited the English files in "UTF-8 encoding without BOM", not regular UTF-8? Normal UTF-8 adds a "byte order mark" which messes up the game. ANSI is identical to BOM-less UTF-8 for English, so the encoding format does not matter for English files.

@Thalassicus
I attached my work. it contains:

Civup_Language.xls
/Text_Bark/JA_JP directory and sql files (one is UTF-8 and another is Shift_JIS, encoding for the Japanese)

Thank you for the files. That helped me discover two problems:

1. Files return to ANSI format if there are no international characters in the file. I will fix this by including one character in each file.
2. The game was attempting to load xml files instead of sql (the file format changed).

I'm fixing these problems now, and will update as soon as possible.

Click to download and try the new version of Civup and Gem. I updated it to hopefully fix those two problems I discovered. There might be more problems, but we will see how this turns out. :)

Great! I will test it tonight to see how it goes!

About international characters, luckily You've caught it! the Spanish Language has many of them, like the famous accents with (á é í ó ú) and ñ ;)

Thanks for your response.
For me, most of translated words seem to work fine.

One more request.
I found out that Tags in /Text_Bark/en_US/Diplomacy.sql is not listed on Civup_Language.

Fixing up this inconvenience will also please translators.:)

I intended to disable the Diplomacy file, until I have time to design it better. It has a lot of unnecessary information which causes excessive work for translators. You can delete it. I disabled it for the next release.

I underdstand about Diplomacy file.
Followings are additional points that I am concerned about.

- Mismatching tags between Promotions sql file and Civup_Language sheet.
- Tags named BUILDING_EFFECT_CULTURE_CHANGE and BUILDING_EFFECT_FAITH_INSTANT in AutoTips_Tips sheet are empty.

If these are not problems, you can safely ignore them.

I was working on a new system to display promotions in a way that will require much less translation, but got delayed. I hope to finish it sometime next week.

Well, Spanish translations of the mods are at 99%, I would like that somebody of the Spanish speakers help me to find errors in translations or correct some phrases. Please send me a PM.

I'm interested in this project and I want to translate in Italian.

Is the bold still true?
I started with CustomNotifications.sql, now I'm working on Diplomacy.sql.
Is it a waste of time?
