Tribes

I usually play French then change the name to something funny. I have stupid names so if (when?) I lose I'm not dissappointed. "Oh, well. Maybe Toileteeria wasn't meant to prosper.

I usually choose Celtic, mostly due to heredity.
Sometimes will custom to Texan, or Rangers and use names like Minas Tirith and Helm's Deep from Lord of The Rings.

I once saw a documentary series on TLC (The Learning Channel for anybody who doesn't know) called "The Mongol Hordes From The East" and ever since, I've played the Mongols.

Othwise, I'll play the American's and change all the city names to things like "Toronto", or "Ottawa"... And change the leader's name to Pierre Trudeau or John. A. MacDonald.

I have a friend who played the American's once. He renamed all his cities to resemble 'white trash' type of things (ie. Trailerpark Ally or Strip Mall Groove). He quit playing as soon as he got to build Freight units

He called his empire White Trash and called himself Jimmy-Jo-Bob or something like that.

I howled with laughter when I saw it...

If I randomize the starting positions, I'll play any civ, but sometimes I get into moods where I'll play Japanese or some civ based on the "look". When playing the Earth map and starting positions normal, I normally play Babylonian or Chinese, for the early rapid growth that they offer...

oh yeah, i forgot to mention, generally, i don't play english or americans.

I mainly like playing civs that have been real significant, like the romans, they are my favourates, i also like the vikings and germans, but gennerally, every new game, i a diff civ.

hum. about large world map and starting out with good position, the persians or the indians are the best for taht. both centralized in several awesome city startup places!

Howdy, im new around here but i've been visiting this site for some time now. learned quite a few things already. I usually play as the aztecs, (no wonder me being from mexico) the sioux are the next in my list. I never use the americans since i agree they are not really an original civ. be seeing ya all..

I'm from England and do play as the English most often, on the world map it just means I have to get map making real quick.

I do play as the other civs too, just not as much, then normally the americans or russians.

I normally pick the Indians cause they have the darkest color, and then i customize the name to be the "Metalheads" and i name all my cities after metal bands, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Pantera, Korn, Tool, White Zombie, etc...

If anyone wants to play the great Metalhead empire, i welcome all.

I dont care whatever colour my tribe is, but i want the closest to the top because they start earlier in the game (1 turn ahead). i always customize to Saiyan. this is an evil blood thursty race from the planet Vegeta. Do you guys watch DragonballZ? its the coolest. I rename my cities after the characters: vegeta, goku, gohan, krillin, bulma, dende, piccolo, frieza, ginyu force and more.

i have long requested a name change of our tribe from Sayen into Saiyan, but it got denied.

Well... as for renaming cities... They all have to have 'Greg' in there somewhere... For example "Samarkagreg", or "Istamgreg" or something like that.

I know, it's stupid, but it does appeal to my ego

I know I'm resurrecting an old topic (and it's not even Easter yet), and I apologize, but after reading this I just had to respond to Håkan and tip my space helmet to Sweden.

I visited Stockholm in 1993 on a self-created 6-city 12-day N.European tour (in mid-Jan ... COLD!). Of my visits to Helsinki, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Paris, Brugge, and Amsterdam, Stockholm was my fave city and best experience. The Vasa museum was so incredible!

FOR ANYONE INTERESTED: The Vasa was the Swedish military version of the Titanic - military strategists here might like it ... I just wouldn't recommend building a unit like this! Though it might be fun ... JohnV? They have a website ... lemme find it here .... http://www.vasamuseet.se/

Anyway, my point is: from my Swedish experience, the first time I ever played Civ (probably '96), I chose Vikings, and while I'm currently getting around and trying other civs, Vikings are probably still my fave.

Håkan: I like your country and your policies.

Same with Canada. I have good friends there and great respect (and a soft spot in my heart

The Chinese have far and away the best starting location. A whole coastline full of resources. The only problem with them is that they're libel to have to put up with the mindless Mongols, who limit your expansion by butting in on your territory and taking undefended cities by breaking treaty.

On the map of Europe the Celts/English are good because you can easily stick five good cities on the islands, have natural defenses (the water) and good terrain.

I would have to say the best starting point on the world map is the Sioux/Americans. If you use the standard starting positions, you will only have one or two civs on the same continent with you, which you can destroy quickly within the first few turns. Plus the civs on the Euro/Asia are usually too busy exploring their own continent to come bother you, at least not until you have established a considerable lead in knowledge and technology. Also, no civ has South America as an intitial starting position so you have all that land available for development w/o opposition. Plus the twin rivers in the Central U.S. make an excellent spot for a knowledge/science city.

As far as city names, I typically use references from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. Nine books gives you a lot of characters, places, etc. to use names from.
