It seems strange that when a AI is killed, instantly all of it's troops disappear.

There should be a random chance for each of these events:

1. They unit disappears, as if the troops dropped their weapons and went home (maybe increase nearest city by 1 pop for each 5 units).
2. They could go kamikaze and attack the nearest city in an attempt to reclaim their tribe. (more likely for a militaristic AI)
3. They could join the victors army as conscript units.
4. They could convert to barbarian status, they would retain their type (infantry, cavalry...) but become barbarians. Ships would become pirates/privateers.
5. They could choose to join a neighbor AI as conscripts

Excellent idea. It is kinda strange to see those poor troops just vaporize.

Another idea would be that you could hire them as mercenaries. You know, do a right-click/contact and negotiate with them on a GPT basis. That would be sweet.

I do like the Pirate/Rebel/Independant approach as well.

Less motivation, communication difficulties, equipment incompatiblilties, etc, mean they'd be less effective than your normal troops. You could also just downgrade them by 2 notches (Elite to Reg - Vet and below to Conscript). The important thing would be not to leave them as equals to your troops. Of course, you would not be able to obtain units you didn't know about yet (no cavalry if no Military Tradition). Not sure how to handle UU. Seeing a Samurai fighting for the Germans would be strange.

Note, these units should not be able to produce a Military Great Leader, if the concept still exists in Civ 4

It may be of limited use, but if you eliminate a technologically advanced AI, their troops should become your troops of conscript level, but you could then send them back to one of your cities and tell your scientists to "Deconstruct and Analyze" to learn the technology required to build it.

Hmm, denyd, I like this!

I like option 4, they become a pain in the butt for everyone around.

Samurai would commit Hari Kari.

I like the idea of the leftover units becoming rogues, though. Maybe even give them a chance of rebuilding their nation if they could take a city.

Oh yes, this is one of the unrealistic aspects of the game I don't like.

I like option 4 too.

This would be a good way to represent partisan resistanc,e even in a completely conquered nation. Camps should form in the nearest forest/jungle/mountain like barbarian camps. Resistors can have a % chance to flee their occupied cities and become a guierrila in the camp along with the former military.

Sweet. This would be fun.

I do NOT like point 4. Why on earth would an eliminated Civ become barbarians or pirates attacking anything on sight? What they should do is be a pain in the ass for the civ/civs who had them eliminated, until all their troops are dead.

I agree with Lennon with a few additions. Only half or fewer of the troops should remain. The troops should have no chance to heal. The troops should be lowered one level (e.g. from veteran to regular, from regular to conscript) to reflect that they are no longer supported by any nation.

I like option 4. Or actually all of them. I'd also like to see something similar happend to all cities in regicide, and they could go barbarian as well, or form a new civ.

Something like the French Resistance, eh?

If you capture an elite unit it should remain elite, no matter what it still knows how to fight and fight well. I understand you point of less motivation but if they lost their country they might not even what to figth for you or anyone in that case, thus becoming worker or slaves. Those who aggree to figth with you or against you do love war, they are mercenaries.

I don't agree that they should keep full status.

If you want to consider them as joiners to your army, consider an historical example, look at the Poles in WWII - They sent troops to fight with the Allies after their country fell to Germany. They normally had older weapons, communication misunderstandings and supply problems due to differences in equipment. They fought bravely, yet due to inferior tools (and poor management by Allied Commanders) often suffered much higher casualty rates.

If you want to think of them as mercenaries, then remember the poor showing the Hessian units had during the American Revolution. The had superior training and equipment, yet they were not fighting with a passion for their future.

how about each leftover unit has a chance of joining ur army in whatever capacity (elite, conscript, etc) and another one of becoming a barbarian. a civilization with whom u share zero cultural affinity has higher chance of becoming a barbarian than joining you.
