Apparently that is the latest patch, but though I have logged on through Steam I am still only at 1.0.0.20. Is it possible I have accidentally disabled the automatic download of patches? Can I force upgrade?

Thank you and apologies for the newbie questions. Long time addict, first time support group attendee.

If you're launching CiV but still seeing the old version number on the main menu, then you've probably disabled autoupdating or are in offline mode.

1) Make sure you're in online mode. You should be able to browse the Steam store and the Steam icon in the system try will be normal, not with a red dotted line across it.
2) Right click on the CiV link in your library and choose properties. Go to the Updates tab. Make sure you're set to have Steam automatically update the game (this is the default setting).
3) Restart Steam. It will check for updates on all installed games on startup.

Thanks and sorry for the thread misfile.

I am in Online mode and the Automatic Update setting is correct; the patch is still not loading. This may be unrelated, but since I downloaded the first Mods from inside Steam, the game has always hung after Exit to Windows (three fingered salute + cancel takes me back out).

Sounds like you may have a corrupted file that's preventing the game from patching. Go back to the game's properties, click on the Local Files tab, then click Verify Integrity of Game Cache. Let it do its thing (it'll probably take a bit, CiV is a big game) and it'll replace any damaged files. Restart Steam when it's done and it'll do a patch check again, then launch the game and your version at the bottom center should be 1.0.0.621.

This, plus several reboots and appeals to various deities, did the trick. Thank you for the help.
