Try forceware 71.89 before you give up on Civ!

I have the same goal as you, trying to find out what works and help people.

Then we are at peace. If I dumped on you inordinately, I apologize. The negativity so prevalent in these forums pushes me to the limit at times, and unfortunately brings it out in me.

Strange : I have a 5200 and the game runs without the slightest visual glitch with the 81.85 drivers. A mystery.

I know. It's weird. Some people do fine with 81.85, and others need 71.89 just to be able to play for more than 30 minutes at a time. I'd guess it has to do with deep hardware configurations, motherboard architecture or something along those lines, but that is beyond my skill-set. I have an nForce2 motherboard, if that helps anyone piece the puzzle together.

Hopefully, within a couple of weeks, the game will be patched and none of this will matter anymore.

Rolling back helped me as well. Still issues every now and then but I think they may be due to other matters now.

My God the improvement I got rolling back my drivers. It's like night and day. No lockups every turn in the lategame, no 2 minutes of disk reading before I can move a unit late in the game etc. Thanks a ton for the suggestion.

I'm on a 6800GT 256, rolling back to 71:89 did not work. On latest drives I can play without problems up to standard maps...anything larger than that is not useable, game becomes extremely slow. Problem seems to appear after a move sequence (diplomacy and wonder movies for example). ALT-tab'ing solves the lag temporarily.

WarX - you stated that you also use 6800, what drives are you using? Have you made any changes upgrades to get your civ4 running? Have not tried 76.44.

I'm on a 2GB RAM, P3.6Ghz, 6800GT 256. I should not have and performance problems with those specs I think. I might also add that using the lowest graphic settings gives me the same problem.

Take2 has not responded to my ticket yet.

I have found the 71.89 driver to solve some problems but the game still has issues from time to time.
Same here. I have graphics set to "Low" and the game mostly works at a decent speed on smaller maps.

I also tried the fix of setting your Nvidia preferences (from the Nvidia control panel - Performance & Quality - Image) to High performance, and 16 bit color, and that seems to have made a big difference too.
