Mitchifer the Brave, destroyer of the Vikings and conqueror of the Persians, liberator of "Mitch's Folly", great general of the no0b empire, had won yet another great campaign. This time, though, it was deemed better to allow the conquered people to live. The great Greek civilization was brought to its knees in a few short years, and capitulated to the No0bs with the agreement that they would serve our needs in peace and war as a vassal.
Danger stewed on the borders, though, and the conquered city of Athens remained vulnerable to the invading armies of Mehmed II. Wounded in the fighting by several crossbow bolts to his chest and legs, Mitchifer had no choice but to pass the command of the army to Trynthlas. As the army marched forth to engage the Ottomans in the field, Mitchifer could be heard crying out "tis merely a flesh wound!" ...shortly after which a thud could be heard as he fell to the floor from trying to leave the cot in his tent.
The army marched on...
Turn 275
First thing off I implemented the suggestions from a few pages back -> fine-tuned the tiles cities were working, promoted our army in Athens, switched a build choice or two.
Now, down to business with our new vassal:
Trynthlas leads the army against Mehmed:
You can see in the second battle screenshot, that our stack largely survived the battle. We did lose our catapults and the trebuchet, but that was expected, and I'm quite certain they made the difference. Other good news, the battle resulted in a new great general for us in Paris! I send him to Rheims to become an instructor. The turn ends, and I wait to see what Mehmed does with the rest of his army...he attacks! Our Great General unit demolishes something like 5 artillery units, and a pikeman easily handles the remaining cavalry. Suicide is an odd choice, but eh...we win.
Turn 276
- We receive the 'quest for classic literature', to build 9 libraries before reaching the renaissance age. Hmm...six turns from Gunpowder (= renaissance) so yeah, I pretty much ignore this.
- A great merchant is born in Paris. Curses on the RNG gods...
- After sending a pikeman to dispatch Mehmed's Knight across the river, I check to see what Mehmed will give us for peace (if anything). He won't give Banking, but he will give us his gold (20) and his map. Deciding that I would rather spend the merchant on a great age than banking, I accept peace, since it would be folly to pursue an offensive war against Mehmed right now.
- The golden age begins! (hooray for single-great-person golden ages)
- I check out the troops in our stack, and it turns out that our great general maceman earned another promotion after slaughtering all those catapults -> hellooooo medic III! (told you guys it wouldn't be that hard to get!)
- Further curious, I check out the diplomacy pages (looking for tech trades or resources) and see that Gilgamesh has more gold per turn available. I cancel our wine-for-7gpt trade and he agrees to give me 9gpt instead!
- Justinian agrees to purchase silver for 7gpt
- Having started a golden age, I want to take advantage of the increased production and commerce -> I boost science up, and I start wonders in Paris (Sistine Chapel), Lyons (Apostolic Palace), and Orleans (Hagia Sophia).
Turn 277
- Pericles wants to trade maps, I say sure, why not?
Turn 278
- Pacal wants a trade:
Yeah. Right.

- I found the city of Marseilles, between Nidaros/Uppsala and Athens, as discussed before.
- Somewhere in here (forget which turn exactly) we got ANOTHER great merchant, this time in Nidaros...I knew working those merchants would ruin our odds! I use him to bulb Banking.
- Also of note, I take advantage of the golden age's no-anarchy civic switch to go to Caste System and run about 6 scientists in Nidaros. End result of this is that we have another GP coming in 2-3 turns out of Nidaros, and it will most likely be a scientist, so we can build an academy.
Turn 280
- We reach the Renaissance era with the discovery of Gunpowder. I start Philosophy, on the path to Liberalism (Philo -> Edu -> Liberalism). We fail the quest of classic literature. Darn.
- I start building Musketeers to replace our pathetic city defenses (archers). The plan is to have at least 2 units in the inner, or far-off from the borders cities, and 4+ in the ones nearer the borders. Once that is done, military production can go towards offensive measures again. (I also have one city building trebuchets to replace our lost siege units)
Turn 284
We get one of my favorite random events:
- Also noteworthy, Gilgamesh builds the Spiral Minaret (we don't have Divine Right anyways). Might have been useful for our economy, but oh well. DR is pretty far down on my tech-tree priority, usually.
Turn 285
Paris builds the Sistine Chapel:
Turn 286
Lyons builds the Apostolic Palace:
- We also get another really cool rare thing: Iron pops in a mine near Persepolis.
Turn 287
I decide to shop our Paper tech around, since it's fairly weak and I want to line the coffers a bit. Plus, tech->gold trades give us good relations boosts, and you'll notice (in the save) that many leaders raised their status one level (either annoyed -> cautious, cautious->pleased, or in Justinian's case pleased->friendly):
Turn 289
- Gilgamesh wants OB, I accept.
- Pacal finishes the Hagia Sophia! Oh well, we get ~700 gold for our trouble (and the wonder wasn't that great, I mostly wanted the big culture boost in Orleans to push it's borders against Pacal and Pericles). We can use the money to run deficit research much longer.
Turn 290
Last turn of the golden age, I switch back to Slavery, just in case we need it (and this way we don't suffer anarchy for doing so). In Nidaros, I am only working 4 specialists at the moment, NO MERCHANTS and it should stay that way until the next GP pops so we don't get yet another of the buggers
I also played out turn 291, to make adjustments post-GA and tidy things up. Off the top of my head (since I can't look at the save at this moment), here's a summary of what's going on and what the heck I'm thinking...
- We've got a great Stack-o-doom out in Athens, and I added some more units to it as the reinforcements arrived (some more pikes, trebs, couple of knights and maces). On the flip side, our city defense is total crap. So, I'm building lots and lots of musketeers right now, and they have all (so far) gotten CG I & II, and are replacing our old-and-busted archers.
Athens, Marseilles, Nidaros, and Orleans each need 4 muskets in them JUST for defense (not necessarily all with CGII promotions). The rest of our cities can get away with 2 for now, I think.
- Once that's done, get right back on track to producing siege units (trebs) and shipping them off to Athens as a staging point. I think we will have one more round of building units/infrastructure before going to war again (unless we get DoW'd)
- Our current tech path is a beeline to Liberalism, which I intend to use on Nationalism OR another military tech useful to us. After that we should be beelining towards getting Cuirassers, Grenadiers, Rifles, and Cannons for the next generation of units. An early rush of cuirassers could give us another quick capitulation from, say...Bismarck (which would naturally follow after we obliterate Sitting Bull, who is his vassal).
Some notes on "bad things I found":
- Building troops in a city without a barracks
- Idle workers when they have work! (already mentioned before)
- Missing commerce/science buildings in cities with decent commerce - back on page 11 I posted the city specializations -> any city that is a hybrid, or a commerce city needs to have a library, market, grocer, bank, (and later, university, observatory, etc). Our economy isn't as bad as it could be, mostly thanks to the vassal system rather than having to perform total-conquest.
-
Athens is building a courthouse currently, it should build the Forbidden Palace next, which will be a great help in reducing maintenance and allowing us to expand the empire further.
-
Nidaros should produce another great person in just a few turns. Hopefully it's a scientist, with which we can build an academy.
- We will need to 'backfill' our territory, especially the south, with another 2-3 cities very soon, or the AI's will jump in and do it for us. I'm not sure how it will affect us economically, but I think we can manage. You guys take a look at the save and let me know what you think in this area.
edit: Attached save, and also:
- I will do a city spec for Athens and Marseilles late tonight, unless someone else wants to give it a go

We also need dotmaps for the filler cities mentioned above.
