Try1 - The Newbies!

OK, I started playing but I can't decide on one thing: What to do with the settler? I don't like having settlers sitting around doing nothing. We could use him to resettle Cyrus' terrain but I think we should wait until the war is over.

On the other hand, the terrain to our south, even though composed of "barren" land, offers tons of ressources. I'm especially interested by the two silver and the three marmots. They would make nice gold+production cities and would more than make up for their maintenance.

Here's a map with three possible sites for settlement:

plan2.jpg

In A there's two silver mines, the second one doesn't have a symbol.

What do you think?

Generally I will focus my turns on producing military since our forces against cyrus are running thin.

Will play the turns in a few hours.

Greetings,

Rince

Hey all, I'm back, although with bad news - my schedule stinks:

Here's my combined Nov-Dec schedule of days I'll be away from the internet:

26Nov-28Nov
2Dec-4Dec
8Dec-10Dec
27Dec-3Jan: Holiday Leave

As for city placement, any of those look fine. Spot B would block others from getting into our territory for those w/o open borders. Or we could settle the spot between Paris and Nidaros to grab the rice and sheep.

Either way, looking forward to the report.

Mitch, you'll just have to tell us beforehand because there is no way anyone here will remember that

OT, A + B look good, can't see any value to spot C except filling in the gaps. I think we should expand north, there is some sugar there that looks tasty for a GP farm or something.

Inherited turn (185):

Uppsala whips a court house.
Units move to take Bactra:

sg_2_0.jpg

Turn 186:
An enemy horse archer dies attacking Persepolis.

Turn 187:

A Swordsman wins against barbarians and gets CR2.
An enemy swordsman is trying to make an escape towards our core empire. Can't deal with him yet since he's on a forrested hill.

Battle of Bactra:

Our CR3 Sword wins against Sword.
However, the second Sword I brought can't win with good enough odds, so we have to wait another turn.

sg_2_1.jpg

Turn 188:

Cyrus' troops don't move at all. He seems to be out of ideas.
OTOH we still can't attack Bactra due to bad odds. We really don't have enough troops around. I can't risk loosing the GG Axe.

Meanwhile some barbs loose their life in the south.

Turn 189:

Cyrus retreats his stack of Archers from Persepolis.

With the now healed CR3 Sword, the second Sword in Bactra is finally defeated, leaving two archers as the remaining defenders.

Turn 190:

Again it is the CR3 Sword which takes out the first archer. Luckily, reinforcements will soon reach the frontline. We also discover Pasargadae, the capital of Cyrus. It is on a hill with two archers defending it. What's worse, one of them has a guerilla II promotion, the other one guerilla I).

sg_2_2.jpg

Turn 191:

Christianity has been founded in a distant land.
The Great Lighthouse has been built in a far away land.

Turn 192:

Reinforcements arrive, Cyrus tries to escape with a settler escorted by a horse archer.

A first Spearman dies trying to kill the horse archer, but a second one succeeds and captures the settler.

We also discover another city: Tarsus.

sg_2_3.jpg

Turn 193:

Taoism is found in a distant land.

Turn 194:

I sacrifice an Axe to kill the Archer in Bactra, but against the odds, he wins, leaving Bactra defended by a horse archer (good that I brought two spears with me.)

One spear even has a CR1 promotion and easily takes out the horse archer. Bactra falls and is burnt to the ground.

sg_2_4.jpg

I stop here since it feels natural to do so, after the fall of Bactra.

Our military situation looks like this:

Quite good in my opinion. Two more Axes are underway (should have built more swords in hindsight...). The Battle of Bactra took quite long because we didn't have enough troops to guard Persepolis and attack Bactra at the same time.

I would suggest the following steps:

- Use the existing army to finish Cyrus off.
- Hook up Rheims and (built at spot A of my earlier post), build some mines to gain the Silver happiness bonus.
- Resettle Cyrus' land
- Should we change our state religion to Confucianism, seeing that we own the holy city?

That's all from my side, have fun!

good job! Cyrus should be easy to clean up now. We need more info about the surrounding lands though. We have no idea how far greece or byzantium have grown. Persepolis will be a great production center.

:goodjob:

Mitch, can you pull another miraculous turnset? Maybe you can destroy a rival every turnset

Haha, I'll see what I can do.

And my schedule is there just to give you all a heads up. I'll try to remember to give you all a reminder before each time I'll be away.

Edit: How many turns do I get again?

its looking good guys ill read up(i was away for the weekend a friend of mine invited me for the wordlcup shorttrack in wich he participated) and once im up to date ill try to contribute some

Hey everyone, sorry about the delay. Getting ready for another work day tomorrow. This will be another two part report; below is the first five turns. The rest of my report will come later tonight.

Turn 1:

Again, I'm left in an awesome position to bring the pain to our enemies. :) Spies are completed in Paris and Orleans, and I begin working on chariots, so they can reach the frontlines quickly.

I had one of our swords kill the immortal near Pasargadae and begin moving the rest of the troops into position. I also changed the work order in Persepolis from a wall to a monument for the culture boost.

Back on the homefront, I begin working on the goldmine between Persepolis and Paris, and building roads between Orleans and Rheims; soon we'll have the silver and gold for the happiness boost. I also whipped the Confucian Temple in Uppsala and begin working on a forge.

Turn 2:

We finish currency, and next I begin working on construction for catapults.

I decide to take a risk and leave one defender in Persepolis to draw out that swordsman fortified on the hill, and it works; he dies attempting to attack the city.

Meanwhile, our forces are closing in on the capital:

Spoiler :

I whip a chariot in Paris to help deal with some of the unhappiness from war weariness, and for another troop for the frontlines.

Turn 3:

The spy from Tarsus start moving towards Pasargadae, and the troops wait and prepare for the coming assault.

I whipped the monument in Persepolis - now it's working on a courthouse. Begin working on a number of courthouses in our other cities (can't remember which at the moment) to reduce maintenance costs.

Turn 4:

I go ahead and pillage the horses to prevent Cyrus from using them to make more immortals.

(Can you still use resources if an enemy is on them? I know you don't get any :hammers: :commerce: :food: from them, but do you still get the horse resource?) I pillaged it just to be safe since I wasn't sure.

In preparation for our coming attack, I get this cool random event:

Spoiler :

Turn 5:

At the beginning of the turn, I get a few offers from Pericles and Pacal:

Spoiler :

I go ahead and take both. We have a number of silk resources where plantations will come in handy. And hereditary rule will help us keep our citizens happy since we've got such a large military at the moment. Not to mention both gave us diplomacy boosts with Pericles and Pacal.

I get tired of waiting for enough EPs and decide to launch the attack - they'll still be useful for Tarsus I imagine ;) . I figure we have plenty of troops to win the battle:

Spoiler :

Our decorated heroic swordsman takes out an archer, and then a city raider axeman takes our another archer. I lose an axeman on the third attack, but he weakens the archer enough so that the following attack is successful:

Spoiler :

After taking the city, I move the spy back towards Tarsus. Also, a great general is born in Nidaros:

Spoiler :

For the rest of my turns, I'll finish off Cyrus and focus on building up our economy and infrastructure. I might start building another settler for future development.

Any other ideas you all have on what to do next? And what should we do with the great general?

Wow! You'll have actually taken out a rival every turnset
:goodjob:

Now we should either build a super medic chariot or a miliary instructor for our new hero. I vote instructor in Persepolis, it should make a good military city.

Also, did you raze or keep Pasargadae?

D'oh, I should've asked about that before I attacked. :( I ended up keeping it without thinking...bad habit of mine.

Should I keep Tarsus when we take that? I know we have a lot of overlap on that peninsula, but it's not necessarily a bad thing.

We can always rebuild later, but new cities will plug up our economy, and captured towns are for quite a while unproductive.

Erk, yeah, shoulda razed Pasargade - definitely raze Tarsus! Like the meanie said, we're hurting enough as it is, and we have the peninsula blocked so we can rebuild there at our leisure.

Looking forward to the rest of your report! :goodjob:

All right, here is the rest of my report:

Turn 6:

After taking Pasargadae, I mobilize the troops in preparation for their next attack. I captured the worker that was near the city and then starting moving the rest into position.

At the start of the turn, Pericles converted to Taoism - seems he founded it. Also, since Cyrus was about to be eliminated, I changed the EP distribution: it's now split between Pericles and Mehmed, since they're our two most powerful rivals at the moment.

I took a look at the tech trading screen, and decided to make a deal with Pacal. I figured it wouldn't hurt since he's our closest ally at the moment:

Spoiler :

We're working on machinery next, to possibly go for guilds/banking to help build up our economy.

Turn 7:

Machiavelli complies a report of the largest civs, and we're number 1. :)

Spoiler :

Unfortunately, our spy is discovered in Tarsus, but the attack continues as planned.

The Statue of Zeus is built in a far away land - unfortunately that prevents us from getting it. :(

Since I screwed up at Pasargade, I took a second look at it and discovered that Cyrus spent a great general there:

Spoiler :

I then rename the city "Mitch's Folly." :) Maybe it might make a good ship production city...maybe.

Turn 8:

At the beginning of the turn, Judiasm spreads in Paris. It would probably help our happiness/culture to see about building some missionaries of our own to spread it throughout the rest of our territory.

The chariot from Uppsala explores the barb city to the east:

Spoiler :

Meanwhile, I'm preparing for the attack:

Spoiler :

Turn 9:

The attack begins. We lose two axemen, but the remainder of our attackers overwhelm the enemy. We also captured a worker.

Spoiler :

Not willing to make the same mistake twice, I burn it to the ground. :mwaha:

Turn 10:

At the beginning of the turn, Germany offers us a deal:

Spoiler :

I can't believe they don't have meditation at this point, so I take the 100 gold. With that extra cash, I bump up the research rate to 70%.

I whip the monument in Mitch's Folly, and start moving the bulk of the troops back up to Paris.

Turn 11:

Unfortunately I screw up again, and a barbarian archer slipped past our defensive line near Uppsala and razes our winery because I didn't move fast enough. :( I start rebuilding it immediately.

Turn 12:

We've reached a population of 2 million - we're ranked number one as far as that is concerned.

Turn 13:

We meet our final rival:

Spoiler :

Apparently we've traded with his worst enemy, so he already hates us  . Fortunately for us, he's so technologically backward that he doesn't pose any real threat.

A courthouse is finished in Paris, and I begin working on the Parthenon for a boost in GPP.

Turn 14-15:

These last couple of turns were spent building up our infrastructure and moving our troops - most of which are almost back at Paris.

The first of our spies has entered rival territory, revealing a Mayan city:

Spoiler :

At the very end of my turn, I discovered another barb city was founded right under our noses:

Spoiler :

It might be worth it to let it grow to size two and then take it for ourselves - it's pretty close to one of the spots we were considering for a city anyway.

So here's what we've got so far - now centered thanks to the calendar tech:

Spoiler :

Now for my thoughts and recommendations. We seem to be pretty isolated now, so we can probably take the rest of this part of the continent for ourselves. A wall of jungle separates us from the Mayans and Greeks to the north. And we haven't had much contact with the Greek city to the east.

I think what we should do now is build up enough infrastructure/cash to get our tech rate back up to a decent level and still be in the black, and then see about building cities in Cyrus' former area and in the space between Paris and Nidaros, as well as capturing the two barbarian cities - especially Ligurian, just in case Pericles tries going for it first. We should consider chopping some of the forests that are close to cities now to we can improve those tiles - I had trouble finding work for my workers! :)

Also, we need to explore the rival territories more. I denied an open borders agreement with Gilgamesh based solely on the reason that I had no idea where he was, and I didn't want to give him free reign to scout out our territory

I left the great general in Nidaros. It didn't effect my turnset since I didn't produce any addition troops - mostly I build monuments/courthouses. I wasn't sure what to do with him anyway, but he should come in handy for our next offensive.

Anyway, I'm back off to work tomorrow - I'll be back on Thursday. I posted my schedule in my sig for easy reference.

Mitch, I hearby appoint you the offical pwner of n00bia

:goodjob:

I think we should move a bit north, there might be a good spot there w/ the sugar. Also, we need to really boost our economy, we have decent infrastructure as far as I can see, but not enough Population and commerce to support it. Needs more libraries, courthouses, and granaries.

Has anyone considered yet what victory we want to go for? Two rivals down makes only 7 left for conquest or domination, but we could do cultural or space race; even diplomatic could work. If we want a military victory though, we should probably start moving our vets in towards Greece, and bring some catapults that we got with construction :mwaha:

I just got back into town from the Thanksgiving holiday. Hope the rest of you had as good a vacation as I did. :goodjob:

Grabbed the save, and took a peek at where we're at. Congrats on the war effort to those who were involved. Looks like you were able to eliminate Cyrus with a minimum of losses. The downside to the war, was that we badly neglected our eastern borders. So much so that I see both the Mayans and the Greeks have started encroaching on our lands.

Darth talked about expanding around the sugar to our northeast - however the Greeks have already set up shop there. This is in addition to their two other cities east and NE of uppsala. Maya has settled north of orleans and is hooking up elephants as we speak. This means we are effectively penned in and will have to eventually use force to expand our empire.

Checking the foreign advisor shows that since Pericles changed religions to taos, our relationship has suffered while we still have very good relationships with Pacal and also with Justinian. That is why I believe our next opponent should be the Greeks. Before we rush off to war though, we do need to finish cleaning up our current empire from the past two campaigns and we must get better intel into our opponents' homelands. I honestly believe that if we had had better intel on Cyrus' lands we may have avoided the 'Mitch's Folly' fiasco. I want to map out Pericles' cities ahead of time and decide which cities to keep and which get burnt to the ground.

I also see that we are falling further behind in the tech race. Already, there are civs with feudalism, theology, philosophy, literature, and drama. Most of these civs want our metal casting tech but not many are willing to trade with us right now. Right now I'm hesitant to trade MC away with just one leader, only to find that he will then go and give it away to everyone else. How do the rest of you feel about tech trading?

So here are my suggestions on our next priorities:

1. Our current empire must continue to improve our cities. We need to examine each city and plan how to get the most from what resources each city has. We really need to plan alittle more so we don't waste time building stuff that we can do without. ex: I understand that Orleans is showing signs of being unhealthy but do we really want an aquaduct as the solution. I know that the aquaduct hasn't had any hammers put into it yet so we can still switch into something else. I would rather try and hook up or even trade for some healthy resources such as the rice paddies and sheep located between Paris and Nidaros or get some of the seafood resources (fish, crabs) that are off shore of Cyrus' lands.

2. We really must explore our opponents' lands to the east and north. We need to get a few spies out to get some recon intel for us.

3. Take care of the barb cities. I hate to have these cities nearby. The other civs are attracted to them like moths to a flame. Before too long some civ is gonna show up and take them over. I'd rather it was us.

4. Keep building up our army. I think it is time to start building cats while we keep researching towards the macemen techs of CS and machinery.

5. Decide what to do with our Great General. Do we need a second general with the troops? I would rather see him placed inside a city as an instuctor but that means we need to identify which city will become our best military production factory. Right now I'm leaning towards Lyons. Nidaros with all it's food sources would be a fantastic choice especially once we put the globe theatre there but I think that we would be better off creating a GP/Specialist farm there instead.

6. Religion! We must start building confucian missionaries to spread our religion. Once we get a great prophet, we can start making some gold by building the Kong Miao in Uppsala.

I will wait 10-12 hours for Carneios to step back in and take his turn and the rest of the team to add your own two cents on our next moves. After that I'll go ahead and play.

1. i agree we must improve our city's and i think that at least for a while we should delay wars we first need to catch up on the economics and the tech side cause when city's are defended by longbows our swords dont stand a chance.

2. the spies are a good idear we also should direct some more spy point to our next target

3.i tottally agree here i hate barbarian city's near my borders

4. hmm i would wait a while with this we can keep one city producing unist but the rest needs to build infra structure if u ask me.

5. i really really think we should join him and make a medic 3 unit they are very important in my eyes it makes the next attack go that much faster cause of slower healing times.

6. totaly agree spread the faith to everyone

good luck with the turns

Pretty good turnset. Two for two, Mitch :goodjob:

I think that before we go any further, we should discuss and decide our direction for victory, as it will greatly determine our next actions. I am in favor of a military option, although not having the Statue of Zeus will make at least one of our campaigns a pain in the neck until we capture it. Another issue with the military option is that we have to have a break at some point or our economy will never recover and we will fall behind in the tech tree.

So.

We have plenty of good, settle-able land (plus barb cities to capture or burn/resettle), we have eliminated two rivals, and we're currently on top of things. To stay on top, we need to stop warring, and shift focus to science and building. Our current military should be plenty enough to handle the two barbarian cities, and with them we can lock down our entire corner of the continent with cultural borders, backfill it with new cities as our economy improves, and start teching up towards another expansionary conquest push starting around the time of Knights, Trebuchets, and early gunpowder (our UU).

Things to do:
- Capture barb cities (if good spots, if not burn and immediately resettle with our own city)
- EXPLORE EXPLORE EXPLORE
- Make our fellow followers of Judaism our friends, and screw everyone else (or try to convert them)
- In the same vein, start building missionaries for confucianism (after we've spread Judaism as our state religion) and spread them around to generate cash with the shrine.
- Build courthouses where they will be useful, libraries everywhere that makes sense, and tech like mad towards CS and macemen (need machinery as well).
- Build infrastructure where needed. We want to be production heavy, with a good enough economy to keep up in tech, and pay support costs for military on foreign ventures. Even though every city may not be a unit-producing powerhouse, they can contribute. Also, bigger cities means more production (and economy), means more units = victory; so we need to build things (like aqueducts) to support the larger cities.
- EXPLORE EXPLORE EXPLORE

On tech trades, my rule of thumb is that I never trade a tech unless I can then immediately shop it around to all the other AI's that we want to (can) trade with, because they WILL turn around and trade it amongst themselves. A second rule is that I try to keep the beaker amount exchanged in trade relatively even - if it isn't, get every piece of gold out of them you can, or offer as little as you have to in order to get the tech we want.

On research, I think we should focus on beelining militarily useful techs, and trade them back for all the other stuff we won't be researching. However, some straying from the beeline is useful to fill out the extra pre-requisites for the techs we want, as it gives a bonus to research for that next tech.

Our great general should be a military instructor wherever we plan to build the Heroic Epic (and later, West point in the same city). We will have plenty other generals to merge and get a medic III unit later, and the unit won't be useful while we're in a building period (which we need to do right now).

I think that about covers it. Discuss on victory condition - my vote is for conquest/domination.
