Try1 - The Newbies!

Why gunpowder of course! :sniper:

UU should be VERY helpful in our utter conquest victory: 2 move= faster conquest :mwaha:

Also, way to go so far! Mitch, we all trust you to kill all of your enemies, so no presure or anything:rolleyes:

Ok, I was going to press through the rest of my turns before making the rest of my report, but I've come to another major decision that needs group consensus.

So here is part 2 of 3 of my report:

Turns 6-7:

We're out of our double-anarchy, and back into production. Pericles finished Angkor Wat in Athens; just in time for us to take it  . Unfortunately though, Mehmed finishes Notre Dame, but we didn't make much progress on it anyway, so no real harm done. Besides, we need to be producing more military units anyway.

Meanwhile, task force one is closing in on Athens, while task force two is bombarding the walls of Argos.

Turn 8:

The chariot that was loitering in Justinian's territory spies Mehmed's forces closing in:

Spoiler :

I tried to keep him one step ahead of the enemy, but I miscalculated and lost him unfortunately  . And as it turns out, the Justinian/Bismarck/SB war has created a hole of neutral territory, so trying to close Mehmed's open borders agreements wouldn't have helped us anyway.

Turn 9:

Our forces are at the gates of Athens, and our spy is ready to accommodate us:

Spoiler :

Our spy succeeds in instigating a city revolt, throwing the defenses in disarray. Pericles' longbowmen still put up quite a fight, and I have to sacrifice four catapults to soften up the defenders, but in the end the city fell to our superior firepower:

Spoiler :

Our capture nets us a good chunk of gold and two wonders - Angkor Wat and Chichen Itza.

Turns 10-11:

With our excess gold and Mehmed's forces closing in, I upgrade the axemen in Nidaros to macemen and prepare to move them to the front to replace our loses.

Meanwhile, in Argos, the city is about to fall. After a few more turns of bombardment, and the loss of a catapult and maceman, I burn the city to the ground:

Spoiler :

At the beginning of turn 11, we finished guilds. I was going to work on HBR and finish it real quick, but then I talked to Pericles to see what he would offer us if he agreed to a ceasefire:

Spoiler :

And he's already lost the will to fight :D . So should we go ahead and take it? I'm tempted to say yes. Not to mention he'll enter war w/ Mehmed as our vassal, and probably act a speed bump for his forces  .

Edit: I'm going to go run some errands while we're all coming to a consensus. I'll finish up later tonight.

@Koros - what I meant, is the odds usually show the appropriate strength for the units and then apply the bonus as a + modifier for the % chance, not a - modifier to the strength of the other unit. I think the mace in question there was damaged. (or not?)

@Mitch - woohoo! Told you he was a wimp! Before I babble about vassalizing him, on the workers - go ahead and set them to work on the cities per my layouts (I haven't seen anyone comment on possible improvements to them, so I'll assume we agree :D).

On Pericles - realize that if we acquire him as a vassal, we DO need to ensure that he doesn't turn around and lose too much territory (if Mehmed goes after him) because if that happens, we will just lose him and he'll capitulate to Mehmed instead! Still, if we play it right (and use our troops wisely) it shouldn't be an issue. I say take the 'offer'

Also of note - there's waaayyy too much empty space between Nidaros/Uppsala and Athens for my taste. Green BFC is what I propose:

All I can say is...get some pikes to Athens!! ASAP!

All right, as promised, here is the rest of my report. Koros...you're in for some fun  .

Turn 11:

As we mentioned, I had Pericles capitulate, and we get a nice chunk of gold and HBR as part of the deal. With the free HBR, I start working on gunpowder.

I continue moving troops up to the front line, and I redirect out EPs so we're not focusing on Pericles anymore.

Turn 12:

I broker a couple of trades with Pericles to get some gold per turn and a happiness resource (can't remember which at the time), but hopefully to get a relations boost later.

Also, we get a pretty sweet random event:

Spoiler :

A free great artist! Well, not exactly free, but we didn't spend GPP on it at least. Although not exactly planned to be a cultural center, I go ahead and get it.

Turn 13:

Mehmed finishes his horse-whisperer quest. I forget what it does exactly, but it's probably not good for us. And there were a bunch of random event marriages that went on as well: relations between Justinian and Bismarck were worsened, but those between Bismarck and Gilgamesh were strengthened.

Turn 14:

Mehmed's stack of doom appears outside of Thebes:

Spoiler :

Turn 15:

At the beginning of the turn, SB capitulates to Bismarck, freeing up Bismarck and Justinian from their wars. Unfortunately, neither one wants to help us - and Bismarck is pretty peeved at us for not helping earlier. Hopefully that won't come back to bite us.

While building up troops, I was a little generous with the whip and tried to finish some forges as well. As a result, we finished our master blacksmith quest:

Spoiler :

The first option is obviously not too great, and the second one granted a free shock promotion to all swordsmen...which we won't be using anymore, so I went with the latter.

Mehmed's forces are bypassing Thebes entirely; apparently he's not interested in Pericles and is still gunning for us. I upgraded some of the units in Athens - hopefully I didn't spend too much cash. We've got a mixture of macemen/pikemen/crossbowmen/catapults/trebs/knights waiting in Athens. I realize knights won't be good against his elephants, but the flanking against catapults and trebs helps out a lot.

Here's a look at the clash of the SoD's:

Spoiler :

In the right corner, Mehmed the mad Ottoman. In the left corner (and at the bottom of the screen) is De Gaulle le pwning N00b.

And a zoomed out view. The pikemen that are outside of Athens are troops en route:

Spoiler :

I've left the movement for the troops in Athens and our workers for the next person to decide what to do with. In hindsight, I probably should have moved a portion of the stack out of Athens to take up a defensive position in the nearby forests. Unfortunately, we can't chop them since they're in Greek territory.

You might be able to move most of the stack one space east and hope that Mehmed will attack you there instead, or that he'll remain out in the open. Unfortunately, Athens is still in revolt and thus has no defensive value.

Also, I've started a settler in Paris, which should be done soon, so we can grab that spot between Uppsala and Athens before Pericles does.

I hope that all makes sense. I'm sure Koros will be able to handle it. :D

I'm headed off to work again tomorrow - and hopefully for the last time this month before the holidays. I'll be back on Tuesday.

Roster:

Trynthlas - on deck
endymion
Darth Meanie - skip until december 7th

Ok, Koros - before you take your turn, let's discuss a bit how best to handle this attack by Mehmed. For anyone with some bright ideas (or ideas different than mine) please speak up!

I'll post on it tomorrow night - bedtime and going to be busy during the day. Please do wait on my post :)

nice capitulation of the greeks i would have wanted more citys from him but with mehmed coming it was the best we could do i think.

about that sod dont let him come near a city kill it in the field. suicide our cats against it and mop it up after that u can try and pillage a bit if he doesnt want peace and maybe take an easy city. but i would go for peace and a build face with more cats and attack again.

Alright, guess what?

We're in REALLY good shape. Much better than I thought.

Couple of random notes first:
- Pericles will convert to Judaism for 115 gold (or we can demand it) - since we're at ~700 gold, I would just demand he does it, as the eventual + from religion will outweigh the -1 from the demand.
- Pericles will trade us Gems and Banana (happy and healthy) for Cows and Silk, two resources we already have lots of - make the trade!
- In retrospect, we should have agreed to a fake war against Sitting Bull, just to get more + modifiers with our friends. Not like he has troops to spare anyway
- We're literally hemorrhaging gold right now -> drop the science rate to slow that down (only need to drop it ONCE right now).

Situation:
- Big SoD outside newly captured Athens - 7 catapults, 5 trebs, and lots of troops. However, Mr. Mehmed must not have Engineering, or something, because he has no defense against cavalry in his stack. Also, a lot of the promotions he used for his cavalry are flanking ones, meaning that if we ATTACK, his promotions are worthless.
- Thanks to our research in Engineering, we have +1 road movement. That means our stack inside Athens can attack Mehmed's stack RIGHT NOW. This is really really good for us, since he's on a grasslands tile and gets no defense bonus (compared to all the forests around Athens)
- LOTS of the troops in Athens have promotions available, so let's discuss those...Cats/Trebs - max out collateral damage promotions. Crossbows - max out combat I/shock/drill (or towards that). Pikes - combat I/II, then formation. Knights - promote the CII one to formation, since we're up against a lot of cavalry, and give the other one flanking I. Now for the tricky part, macemen - We want them all with combat I; from there we need a few shock (2-3) at least one more charge (anti-siege); and if there's any left with dual-promotions available, give them combat II.

Now, realize Mehmed can't get to Athens in one turn - which is good, because it means we can almost empty the city (almost) and still get any stragglers back into the city unless he attacks where our troops will end - if he does, he'll be on an undefended tile AGAIN and we can probably finish him off. If not, he'll move down to a forest, and we can charge back into the city if he's got enough left to make us unable to finish him off, or we can just finish the job.

So - drop the science % once, throw a few deals with Pericles, promote our units, and ATTACK!

On the attack, obviously we want to throw all our siege at him FIRST - wear him down as much as possible. Follow up with our chariot and knights to pound his siege more. Then grab the big whole bunch of maces, crossbows, and pikes, (leave any units below 80% strength in the city!) and throw them at his army. I recommend turning on Stack Attack on your options for this last bit, otherwise you'll get to sit there for a looooooong time.

This be the plan of Trynthlas the no0b, who actually beat this month's GOTM map (which was Emperor!), and is currently quite proud of himself!

Couple more random things:

Our next unit builds will need to be almost all SIEGE (trebs trebs trebs), as we're burning them all on Mehmed's stack.

Mitch's Folly is building a Knight, sometime in the far far future - I think this is presently a waste of hammers and the city should switch to infrastructure. We have plenty of other production cities to churn out troops right now.

Ligurgian needs to be re-worked to make use of it's mines, since it is building troops.

Orleans is not working it's Gold mine. w.t.f. mate? That + dropping science to 50% solves almost all our deficit issues.

Nidaros should work a Scientist specialist instead of the 2 food/1 hammer forest it's doing now. Also, there's 2 workers idle in the city! Send them off to be useful somewhere else! Additionally, once we're confident that Mehmed isn't going to overrun us, we should switch to Caste System and use that to work all scientists (and one spy) in Nidaros - I don't like having to work a merchant :p

Persepolis can stop working one of the 3 food farms and stick that on the 4 hammer mine - production is king!

Rheims should detour from units and build the Heroic Epic, then start churning 'em out!!

Paris is going to give us a great person next turn, either a Prophet, Merchant, Scientist, or Engineer. Prophet should start a Golden Age, Merchant should either bulb (depending on the tech) or do a GA, Engineer should be saved for a wonder we want, and Scientist build an academy in our best science city (or second best).

Espionage points I think should be reworked to look like this: (number = weight)
Pericles - 3
Gilgamesh - 2
Pacal - 1
Mehmed II - 4
Justinian I - 1
Bismarck - 1
Sitting Bull - 0

Tryn, did you have something to say?

I would make a suggestion, but I can't see the save right now. Way to go Mitch, 3 for 3! And good job on the GOTM Tryn.

Once we remove his SoD, we should extort him for peace, his cities are to far away to be a target. Junstinian looks ripe for the picking! I would suggest Bull, but that would involve Frederick. After that we could liberate the Great Wall, then go for Frederick/Bull, and only then shall we destroy Mehmed II. By then we will probably have had a Domination Victory :mwaha:

Also, caste system isn't worth giving up the whip in my eyes.

Koros, its up to you!

Just a quick update to let everyone know where we're at. I had a RL crisis over the weekend that occupied my Sunday afternoon and delayed my post. I've played almost all my turns and just need a few more hours to put together my report. But I can report that the Noob empire is still standing at this time...

I'm off to work and should be able to post everything alittle later today. Thanks for your patience.

Still out there, Koros? :shifty:

If you're busy that's cool, just would like to see your report (and trying to stick to our 24/48 rule :p)

Trynthlas u getting nervouse for ur wedding yet;) were the same age and im not even close to marrying yet it always amazes me how far ahead in live people are compared to me. im still playing cocky student that drinks way too much:)(note also alot of fun) i have a friend who is getting married also we are going to give him one hell of a bachelor party

More excited than nervous :)

I finished my bachelor's this past May, and got a good job straight out of graduation, so to me it isn't that big of a step to get married (we dated for about a year, I proposed last December, so it's been around 2 years now). Interesting note, even though I have a better job than I did in school, I'm poor again since we've been buying things to get started on life together (including a house! ) so lots of stuff adds up quick, heh :crazyeye:

i know what u mean(kind off) i always had a lot of money cause i live at home and have a nice job besides school but im moving out in 2 months and all that furniture is expensive especially if u buy it new(i dont). im lucky thoug my parents pay the rent and other stuff i only have to poay for my food so im not really independed yet.

One week later...

Everyone still here? I was hoping Koros would be able to post a quick update at this point, but I guess he's nowhere near a computer.

i believe he sint able to play maybe its time for tryn to take it over and play the turn?
