I was in a race to beat the clock... only like 15 turns left before Darius would win a Time victory.
What happened? Well, I focused on Scince, Culture, and managing my empire figuring I'd get the cash to buy CS's once I was clear to get the UN. This was a bad strategy... I should have focused on CS's earlier instead of all those RA's. By the time I was ready to start buying them up, Arabia had 9 and I had 2... and had to keep outbidding Darius for the thrid. Building wealth and using gold focus in all my cities, I could not compete with Arabia for CS's. Did the game get patched lately to make AI more centred on city states???
Anyhow... I WAY overshot the science part. Could have done a decent space race. I even had a GE for the UN (built it later than I could have because was working on getting gold... ughh). I quickly realized I was in an unteneble situation that called for a drastic change of plans. So I build a few units and DOW'd Arabia. Unfortunately, I played that badly and lost my initial force... did not scout adequately. Slammed my head against Mecca one more time before realizing that taking the Eastern CS on his continent would be easier, and give me the needed bridgehead. Battleships are marvelous. By the time I took that, I had a lot of fighting to hold position before I got B17's on the scene. But still no headway until they were upgraded to Stealth Bombers -- which totally kick butt! And a few mobile sams and modern armor, and viola.... the cities start falling. I used a nuke to clear out Mecca because the clock was really ticking now. Finally, I take Mecca and then get peace for all his gold (about 2000) which I use to buy up city states I used to be at war with. Note, he couldn't hold his city states while at war and was down to 6. But there were only 11 left in the game!
Got a GM at a very timely time, and was able to get some influence and cash, and finally got my 10th vote 6 turns before the vote. Then Darius outbids me. So I outbid him next turn and immediately DOW Darius (very cheesy, imho). He was very close to capturing one of my CS's when the vote comes up and I win. I was planning to nuke his units attacking that CS, but my nuke took one turn too many coming from Arabia. Which was a darn good thing because after the game was over and submitted, I nuked those units and the CS became very angry with me.
By then, Monte (who had captured all of England) was completely captured by Darius, who was now working on taking Ghandi. I had nobody to trade with and until I got the Rationalism happiness civic, I was at -12. Ouch. That put me up to +11, though.

I stink stink stink at this game, btw. Wish there were SGOTM's so I could learn from some experts - can't stand just spectating someone else's game, thouhg.
I really wanted to (a) reload from my t148 save... that's when I noticed things starting to go against me in retrospect; or (b) win by a different VC which would have been simplicity itself (only Darius and I had our capitols at the end; only one Appollo program built and I was starting Giant Death Robots -- still haven't seen one in action). Anyhow, I stuck it out and proved that there are more than one way to skin a cat.
Now, one complaint... no more Washington, pl4ease. at least not for a while.
