Settled in place and went looking for puppets to get some use out of the roman unique units (Social policies ended up being tradition, piety, freedom, patronage, honor). Ended up puppeting the larger part of the map, but could probably have finished quicker by being a bit more focused on which great people spawned at the end (somehow I had convinced myself it was possible to hurry the Utopia Project with a GE :crazyeye:)

I did great and decided to go for Museums with 2 GS before opera houses thinking I will get 3 free Museum for legalism.
Turned out you must have Opera Houses or you get nothing instead of museums :(

Did not know that after 1.5 years of civ...

That's freakishly similar to my game. Settled Rome in the same place, the same long road up to Edirne, same 3 Ottoman cities puppeted, only settled one city, I think even the same social policies (I maybe did commerce instead of honor). The only difference seems to be my war stalled against Hiawatha whereas you rolled over him. That's why you finished 40 turns earlier than me :)

Went with only 3 cities, could not find a good spot for a 4th one. i should have settled near marble, but i dont like bunching up cities. Got attacked by Sully very early, just after i sold him luxes and GPT so it was a very fortunate DOW. Smacked him around and took his peace without any gains but for nice payoff. Later on eliminated him when Mohawks were beating him up as to take some cities and create a buffer. Never got much culture from those two puppets.

Liz was almost never friendly, Hiawatha and Rammy till the end, Oda turned on me late in the game, so i took Mohawk offer to joint DoW and took Tokyo with few units gifted by CS i allied for their coal. I did not fight other wars, was on lookout for a Hiawatha backstab but it never came. Signed a lot of RAs, finally got to build Sydney with several policies left and get a use out of its bonus. did not have GE ready for it though so it got delayed. messed up Utopia construction a bit letting my GA expire before completion. But overall not many more turns to be shaved off. Maybe earlier allies for Culture CSs would have made a difference. I was never broke despite being beat to Macchu and few other wonders, so there was room to throw more cash at CSs and borrow more for RAs. Maybe rushbuying some buildings in rome would have helped, it was making a lot of wonders so i did not maximize Roman UA.

Looking at the top submissions i am quite happy with my time. wonder how much 4th city would have helped.

Culture victory in 1954 A.D.
I accidentally gave away half my empire on the final turn by agreeing to a peace deal with Egypt :-(

Yup, Hiawatha was never too much of a problem in my game. On the other hand, it set me back quite a bit that the other three (Elisabeth, Oda and Rammy) decided to all declare war on me around 150, breaking all my RAs and starting to conquer the CS allies in the east.

Breaking through the english longbows really was a pain and probably took more resources than it was worth (But then being in a permanent war with the rest of the world would slow everything down by not having RA and trading partners, so...). Guess having been nicer while taking out Suleiman and Hiawatha would have saved some more turns there.

Settled in-place, and then 3 cities in total.
I played very poorly at the beginning, with settler, worker captured by barbarians and a city captured by Suleiman. :(
When iron working finishes, Legions fight back and Istanbul is now mine. :)
Then, the game is very peaceful. I have no military conflict with the others though Oda, Eliz and Rame all declared war to me.

I used Legalism for opera houses and Engineer for Hermitage. RA is not that useful as money to cultural CS looks better. Not enough money as my empire is too small.

Built only one city. Puppeted one. Forgot to grow enough. Started utopia at size 26. Took me 11 turns to build.

Start:

Warrior South West.
Settler South West on the coast
Warror west west, saw marble 4 squares away
Moved settler 1 west

Build Scout - Worker - Granary - Stonehedge - (bought archer) - GL - NC
Huts: Warrior got 2 (cult and 75g), Scout got 2 (map and AH)
Research, Pottery - Calendar (AH from hut) - Trapping - Writing - Philosophy - arch - math - iw - edu - metal casting - chivalry - bulb (acoustics) - compass - etc

Saved one GE for sydneys opera, used libery finisher for cristo

Policies: Trad - 2, Piety, Trad last 2, Freedom, Liberty, Patronage

CS: got two cultural state early (the ones to the left of my capital)

Wars: Sule declared pretty early, defended with one warrior (legion) and archer
Eventually captured Ankara north of me near Ivory and Spices. Sule did not trouble me afterwards

Lizzy declared on me just for fun and broke RA, killed a few of her units and she agreed to peace and was friendly afterwards.

Egypt when hostile after first RA.

3 waves of RA. 4 during medieval, 2 in ren, 3 in ren

Great People: 2 eng, 5 sci, rest artists

Think played pretty much perfect game apart minor stuff.

I recorded early game I think but could no be assed afterwards
No1 want see me videos anyway - I need way to long - all this trading lux for gold ... not really interesting ..

dont even know bo anymore
I varied my normal "wonder spam" to a wonder spam with hg very early - as not too much food was in cap I went for them pretty soon - think its been my 1. wonder - it got followed by many others ...

I didnt find egypt untill late medival age for some reason what sucked a bit ..

did lot of ras - allways with every civ out there when available (apart the one i was fighting) - 1. wave just before I went with gl and preteched into medival age.

just after 1. ra with ottos ended i had 5 legions rdy to cut intoits cities - left him 1 city so i could do ras with him - then through irqou 1 balista helped a lot for his cap.
1 city allive - peace

I was so rich all game .. constantly about 200g + - was in GA from like turn 100 on like allways ... after irouq I went for japs but stoped after 2 ciites for peace and ra :)

then a bit choping of enland for silver lux and then game was pretty much over.

with keeping opponents to 1 city the risk of brokken ras gets limited a lot ...
still I should have done 1 more wave of ras - I ended with last wave giving me the 2 techs after electricy (oxford for mass media)

dumb me build both opera house and christo by myself when I had the poped engi just rdy (didnt know u cant rush utopia anymore ......) well .. nm ..

Peeked at about 1000 cult (remember this has also been peek for me in other cult games) in end I had 10 landmarks and 2 unused artists ...

well just if some1 dont know yet - the plan is to get archeology as fast as possible (used the scientist from PT to bulb it) - get museums with legalism fill then in 16 artists 4x cities x 4slots and get cult and pump artists like mad.

for some reason i didnt get free opera in my anaxed otto cap even when i had all other cult buildings for 100% - guess a bug from last patch

Not sure if you need to settle a 4th city by your own for this. Great game btw :)

I realized this after my game and after watching Dave's video. Now i must adjust the execution time frame. But i can imagine a bit how G&K will be much different for culture games with faith included.

I did get free opera in anaxed city in a previous game before last big patch.

other civs been very rich in my game this made stuff pretty easy

t308,

two cities nc-start with one city near gibraltar.

afterwards settled one city near marble and annexed edirne from suleyman at the coast/river.

used the first wave of ra's to get to acoustics (117) and do the legalism trick.

bulbed two gs for archeology.

built soh to get to the last policy (288) and built utopia in 20 turns.

Hiawatha made it to outer space. I had 2 cities and 2 puppets, I was maybe 40 turns out. More cities? Obviously an early war with Hiawatha after I ran over the Ottomans would have been good.

Managed to get Stonehenge and the Colossus early. Missed the Sistine Chapel.

(higher score than the two other people I've seen finishing on 311 :D).

Tried something weird. Settled on the northern Ivory (with 2 nearby Wheat --> fast granary) and went for Trapping first. Worked out surprisingly well; got Brussels on T26.

DvLNHh.jpg

Only settled one more city. On 2 Iron as I should find out on T56.

Somehow the rest of the land was pretty bad. However Istanbul was quite juicy. Somehow though I ended up taking all of the Ottomans cities except Instanbul :crazyeye:
Hiawatha took it a few turns after I made peace.

Obviously I wanted to go on and take out the Iroquois next, especially since they were flourishing and building quite a lot of wonders that I coveted.
However Elizabeth declared on me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Annoyingly I had to take out 2-3 of her CS to even get to her cities.

MEANWHILE, I delayed the Iroquois expansion a bit:

And then... the open borders ended: :D

When I reached London, Liz came to me and begged for mercy.

And all that just so she could immediately start another war! (without even having any more cash/troops):

Of course 10 turns later when the peace treaty ended I took London. Didn't forget that you sniped my Notre Dame earlier, 8itch!

So. 11 turns until Utopia is done:

QnlLmh.jpg

What can one do during that time? Hmm... might very well just kill Hiawatha real quick (who had twice my army and much better tech than me :mischief:)

Apart from a huge score boost from his pop, land and wonders I also shaved of 1 turn from Utopia due to the captured Statue of Liberty :)

BTW, Ankara was useless for me pretty much the whole game due to a bug :(

...did this as a OCC. Bravo to Attaturk, I thought I had a decent time for a OCC! I enjoyed playing this game as not only was it cultural victory, but as a warmonger with only one city. I allied 4-5 cultural CS for most of the game. Early war vs. Ottomans, conquered them with only two cities. Conquered Hiawatha after several wars, close to the end--he would never give me better terms than even for peace. England attacked two or three times but never achieved anything. Egypt was huge but friendly, only denouncing me just before I won. Japan and Egypt had several short wars.

First ever attempt on GOTM, or indeed a cultural victory so I learnt a lot doing it. I got off to a really strong start + was smashing sulieman and the iroquais in no time. Then I just cruised to victory without too much trouble.

I had never even considered building the sydney opera house or the CR before, which I left a little late. Also I thought i'd finished the game when I completed the 5 social policies, didnt even realise I had to build the damn thing too!

Welcome to GOTM. :salute:

Sounds like you learned a lot. Just keep reading, these guys will teach you much more.

Don't know if this is remarkable, but my win was Achieved without building cristo redentor or Sydney opera house.
