TSG44 After Action Report

This time, I changed the order a little to prioritize science and ignore bottom of the tree before industrial.

Essentially build all culture, science buildings / wonders (and HG) and don't be afraid to ally cultural states and put specialists in all buildings. Early culture from all sources adds up!

build: monument - scout - granary - boat - boat - boat - GL - NC - TA - Terracota - HG - etc

bought: worker, boat, boat, trireme, Lighthouse, Harbor, University, Museum, Workshop, ..., Broadcast Tower

Oxford: to get broadcast towers

Scientists: first settle, the rest bulb

research: pottery - sailing - AH - Trap - Wri - Optics - Calendar - (GL philo) - etc

I thought 230 might be possible. Nicely done! :goodjob:

I settled in place because I couldn't see a mountain nor marble in the starting screen. I was disappointed that I couldn't move the warrior north of the settler's starting location on account of the forest. I had assumed (incorrectly) that there were two short peninsulas to the south. I moved the warrior 1 tile to the west revealing the National Wonder (Mt. Sinai I think +8 :c5faith:).

I discovered useful ruins: +20 :c5culture:, +1 :c5citizen:, and upgrade Scout -> Archer.

I researched Pottery and Sailing to get work boats and worked Mt. Sinai (after buying the tile) for 2 turns to get an early pantheon (God of the Sea). Once I got 240 :c5gold: I purchased a work boat to improve the Crabs which I sold to China for 240 :c5gold: for another work boat to improve the Pearls which I also sold for 240 :c5gold: to buy another work boat to improve one of the fish. Three early improved sea resources worked out very well.

On the wonder front, I missed Temple of Artemis on turn 38 (I think I had 2 turns left). I got just about every other wonder I went for.

I teched a little out of order to capitalize on my 6 fishing resources start. I researched Iron Working (for Colossus) and Optics (for a Harbor) before finishing Education. I opened the Renaissance on turn 135 with Acoustics and then beelined the top of the Tech tree to get the Seaport and Museum both up and running before researching the majority of the Renaissance era wonders.

My social policies were all of Tradition, all of Piety, left side of Commerce, top 2 of Patronage, all of Freedom, finished Patronage, finished Commerce.

I built a Monument -> Scout -> Shrine and then went for wonders exclusively while buying all the necessary buildings. Sometime in the Industrial Era, I ran out of wonders to build and built some buildings and a couple of Turtle Ships (to defend my fisheries from barbarians) since I had nothing better to build. I don't think any of the wonders took more than 10 turns to build and none of the buildings (aside from the Monument and Shrine) took more than 3 turns to build.

I could have finished a few turns faster if it weren't for a couple of mishaps. I lost a GA to an invisible barbarian unit (game glitch) on about turn 170. I was doing a good job micromanaging my great people and had a GA and GS ready to pop on the same turn but forgot that the Louve GAs increase the cost so the timing was then out of sync (and I didn't bulb when I intended to because the GS was delayed about 12 turns IIRC). I also forgot to fire all of my specialists (except the engineers of course) and change the city focus to production when I started work on the Utopia Project which probably cost me 2-3 turns. I only had 1 cultural CS ally for the first half of the game and didn't prioritize CS as much as I probably should have. I also didn't lock down Mt. Sinai so the city was producing 8 :c5faith: less than it should have for most of the game costing me a GA at the end of the game for the first 5 turns of the Utopia project. Outside of those 5 turns (the most important turns), I was in a perpetual GA for pretty much the entire second half of the game.

Turn 270 isn't bad. I think I could have finished by about 20 turns earlier without the mistakes (and invisible barbarian bug) mentioned above and if I had managed to build the Temple of Artimis.

First play: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=11839261&postcount=23

Had to try this again. Main changes:

- Policies: Commerce instead of Honor and going full Tradition before Piety
- Religion: Goddess of the Hunt instead of God of the Sea
- Got to Drama & Poetry / Amphitheater more quickly instead of Philisophy / NC
- Remembered to build ToA this time (and as first wonder), then HG, then GL.

This time my capital did grow to size 39 (instead of 32), but I lost some wonders because of the lesser production (well, probably also prioritized incorrectly, since other players without God of the Sea don't seem to have this problem ). Not getting Chichen Itza was something I did not want to happen, that probably cost me some turns. Again didn't get to Industrial-age as fast as I wanted. Probably should have used Oxford for that.

Still did better then on my first try even when I didn't get as much influence to city states from barbarian camps (because took more of a fastplay approach on this second try).

Got coal this time which was nice and also used hammer overflow for the first time ever (for Utopia). :)

So 245+9(=Utopia) instead of the 254+14 of the first try. Still far away from the good players, but at least I learned something new again.

Ok finaly i was like - you invest so much time into this game - so basicly 20€ is like less then 1€ per hour fun and in end thats cheap ..
Moderator Action: Removed unnecessary language, please refrain in future.

finished this in t223 - not sure which was time to beat but well I made some huge mistakes this game so shaving off like 10 turns +5-10 turns more prebuilding utopia should be possible - still I dont beleive in a sub t200 win - seems impossible with occ - even with this land - maybe with massras on higher difficulty it d be possible

bo been like: Monument - scout - granny - gl - NC - workboat - HG and more wonders ...

tried to aly the CS as fast as possible with barb missions - but they were pretty much spread so it took like 50 truns to do them all (poped up around turn 40 ...)

sp were obvious:
Tradition
Peity (delayed the Ga sp till CI)
Patronage
Freedom
finsih patronage
Liberty

I actually thought till end of game that I could rush Utopia with the lib ge - how wrong I d been ...

Thing went wrong:
religion ...
send my Missionary wandering instead just converting some close CS so that pressure builds up and the chain starts - in end there were like 3 buddism cities when there should have been 30
also 2nd belief after cathedreal should have obviously been the production bonus -
well I did choose the cathedral and +8 cult

can some1 tell how strong the "get science for spreading" thing is? might have been useful in this

teching could and should have been a bit better - when university hit I ddint have scientists in it all time - cost me definatly like 5 turns to open up freedom

I also mssed up with faith a lot ... one could and should should be able to settle 3 gp very soon and have faith machine with that

in end I figured that getting coal with 2 citadels d have been possible - and was like 10 fights from gg away but somehow its been too late - guess some more fighting early could not have hurt ..
with all the mcs alies I could have killed all map in like turn 160

had video running for like first 150 turns or so, then my session got interupted and I could not be assed anymore.
Also quality seems sucky of my videos and to be wacthable I d have to make them run 2x-4x speed. Also I sometimes dont notive when video stops as its "full"

edit: ToA been built pretty early by some ai, just about when I was thinking wheater to build it, lost halfbuilt henge aswell ...
with these 2 wonders .. well ... one cant have everything .. but seing that more early prod d have been helpful and I had to build things on top of ivory maybe the workboat belief d have been better as god of hunting - but I ddint even see/recognise all sea res when I picked ...

Shocking victory, highly disappointed with myself  Should have won a lot earlier, but got into two wars with Oda & Darius, that lasted a little longer than I would have liked. Darius being the worst with his annoying ICS at regular intervals.

Still, interesting game.

Maddjinn used that one in his Maya LP. It seemed way stronger than I expected to be honest - like 1/3 of a tech per conversion attempt

hello fellow civ fanatics and gotm veterans!
i just learned about gotm last week and this is the first one i played and would like to submit. i think i did relatively well (24x turns) , but unfortunately my game crashed right before the very turn i was going to finish utopia (guess i really shouldnt have clicked around and opened the city screen while the turn was loading...).
i think i read somewhere that one is allowed to reload an autosave in a case like this. is that correct?

unless Leif knows otherwise:

yes, you can upload the save if the reload was only for a crash. the uploaded save file is put through a utility to check out if there were any events in the save that would render it invalid. from what I understand, one reload from a crash wouldn't invalidate it.

Hammer Rabbi is correct.

First, Welcome to CivFanatics and GOTM. :wavey:

Second, you should set your autosave interval to 1 so that if a crash happens, you do not have to replay very much. When you reload from autosave, you should try to move your units and perform city tasks in the same order you did originally, as best as you can remember. Having done all of that, you should then let us know, via Private Message (it activates for you after you have made 5 posts and have been here for 5 days), what happened and the game date and turn number of the crash.

Please feel free to submit your game, best of luck.

Cultural Victory (no RA's)
Turn 214 (1520ad)
Score = 1961 (HOF)
Seoul = 33

Succumbed to peer & family pressure and bought all the dlc's after all. :p

What a lovely starting position! We just had to have all the sea boosts asap. :)

Good fortune: culture from the very first ruins, and later on faith from another.
Bad fortune: Seoul demanding Copper, while Ethiopia refused to hook up the stuff for several millennia...

We basically b-lined for all cultural advances and ignored the bottom half of the chart. After the opening stage, most things were bought rather than built, while Seoul kept creating wonders. There were too many though, we couldn't get them all. The AI got all the extra ancient wonders, as well as Notre Dame, alas.

With Seoul not growing as big as we had wanted, science did not go fast enough. So we planted our first Spy in Kyoto and stole Masonry, Construction, Iron Working, Engineering and Metal Casting, not caring that the AI took all our tech as well. :mischief:
We still fell way short of getting to Cristo Redentor. Made two oil platforms though, and managed to complete Utopia in 5 turns with 0.3 hammers to spare.

We were making well over 900cpt in the end.

Like mentioned here before: Just pay your CS ally 200 gold and they will connect the resource for you. I did it that way ;)
So did I, as I didn't get any Great Generals. Singapore had Coal within their borders. Seoul did have Aluminum though for its 2-tile river. ;)

You Oracled Freedom...awesome. And as soon as turn 142-143 :goodjob:

awesome game Ribanna! amazing how you got all those cultural allies by T74, I don't think I had even found them all by then. you must have had some good luck with quests, or did you spend a lot of gold to get them?
Also, thanks for the tip on spying! I didn't realize how many techs you could get from spying. I've been replaying, and chose to spy on Egypt instead of Japan because their Cap had more pop, but I only got a couple of techs from them before they had nothing new to steal. I guess it helps to keep in mind what tech path each AI is focusing on. Japan must be going straight to Steel.

Thanks. :)

The stealing went well because we had ignored everything in the bottom of the chart after Mining. We could have gotten Physics as well from Japan, except that by then our own science blew well past that. :D

Of the cultural City States,

Bucharest - targeted a camp, and we gave them 500g
Kathmandu - wanted China found and targeted a camp
Kuala Lumpur - wanted culture, and we gave them 500g
Monaco - targeted a camp

We also killed lots of barbarians on the borders of Monaco and Kuala Lumpur, where our Spearman hung out. :p

Lhasa targeted a camp as well and received 250g.

I love those "please find Civ x" quests. :) I purposely delay establishing embassies, just hoping to get those quests - and then instantly fufill them by establishing the embassy.
unfortunately I more often get the "please bully CS x" quests - I hate those ones!

i avoid those bully quests unless im doing a domination game. ive lined up 6+ units in their borders and it's never been enough to create threat on them since it also goes off how your army strength compares to others in the game. unless im going dom im usually the last or 2nd to last of the civs in military strength.

My main issue was thinking it was a science game until about turn 90...so I definitely could have done better.

More details: I didn't ally the CS'es nearly as soon as I should have, didn't even find Monaco until T150 or so. I have been trying to do the HoF VVV so I haven't played GnK in a bit, so I forgot that Freedom didn't open until industrialization now. Many things added up so I know I could have shaved 15-25 turns off in the end.

I tried that but the option to Improve a Resource was redded out. Wasn't allowing me to do it.
In my game, I was allies with Singapore and they already had a mine on the coal so I didn't get it nor could I 'improve' it. I saw Jakaria had it unimproved (farm on grassland with it). So I ousted Egypt and improved it through the gifts which granted me the coal. About 30 turns later I got a message saying Singapore and Jakaria gave me their coal....

Also totally messed up my first attempt at the hammer overflow trick, but hopefully i will get it right next time.
What Hammer overflow trick?
