Tupac08 - Simply Sid

Is it worth buying chem for GPT and at the same time a ROP with Korea, this may help against the Chinese for the next 6 turns, and will reduce cost of Chemistry, we can wait 20 turns for war with Korea.

Turn 5 (continued): Dial up the Koreans. Education, RoP, 45gpt and 271gp buys us Chemistry. I actually think Banks would help us a lot in future but I set research to mettalurgy anyway (still 0 sci).

IBT - China falls back!!! For the first time in my turnset we get no counterattacks! The mongol peace deal expires and with no preparations I am forced to accept a renewal

Turn 6: Amsterdam: Heroic Epic --> Knight. Utrecth: Knight --> Knight. Lauwersoog: Rax --> Merc (I'm building a few as we have just 6 and more Mercs would free up our Knight armies for offensive and pillaging duties rather than defence)
Kill an exposed cav that was trying to fall back (23-4) and another cav in korean territory (24-4). Rush a merc at Rotterdam (82gp).

For the first time this round I have confidence hitting enter :)

IBT - The mongols declare war on Portugal via Babylon. A chinese rider is dropped off next to Amsterdam.

Turn 7: Eindhoven: Market --> Knight. Haarlem: Court --> Knight. Rotterdam: Merc --> Merc (to be short rushed). Delft: Merc --> Merc. Kill an invading cavalry with our knight army. (25-4). Retreat the rider near amsterdam with an MI then finish him with a nearby knight (26-4).

IBT - The Chinese are back :( Mongols join Babylon against America. Korea joins Babylon against the Inca

Turn 8: Middleburg: Court --> Market. Kill 2 Muskets and 3 cav with our forces based out of Lauwersoog (31-4). Rush a knight at Lauwersoog.

IBT - More chinese arrive. Looks like they're back in force :(

Turn 9: Groningen: Court --> Market. Lauwersoog: Knight --> Knight.
Kill a cav, and 3 Muskets at Lauwersoog (35-4). Notice that WW has kicked up a notch so have to raise the lux slider. Portugal is now in the IA.

IBT - More chinese arrive. Korea joins Babylon against Portugal

Turn 10: Amsterdam: Knight --> Knight. Roosendaal: Treb --> Treb. I leave the movemnt with the next player to decide how best to move forward.

Final Kill:Loss Tally 35-4

Goals:
Raze the nearest Chinese city
Get at least 3 more cities down
Secure the Chinese border
Get Chemistry

Only got 1 new city down.

Post flight Notes:
Our alliance with the Mongols expires next turn. I think we should let it rest and make peace with China very soon. We may want to raze one more city, and I think we could take down Anyang in 3 turns. This might be a good option to just give us a little more leverage at the peace table. Mettalurgy is not widely known (only Babylon, China and Portugal) so if we can use peace to get a significant discount on Mettalurgy we might be able to 2-fer or even 3-fer it.
I think that once we get into the industrial age we should bee-line for Steam power and have a small respite while we get rails up and running and our economy booming.

Anyway, here's a picture of the front

And the save.
Good luck!

ROSTER

tupaclives - Just Played
CKS - UP
Del62 - On Deck
Daeron - waiting

The following tactics are PROHIBITED:

RoP Abuse Tactics - Denying resources, blocking key tiles, RoP rape, or other ways to screw-up a civ via the RoP. A scout in AI territory has an explicit RoP and is subject to this rule.

Peace Treaty abuse - If you get concessions from the AI you must wait for the 20 turns to end before declaring another war. You may, however, incite them to war (demands to leave, espionage etc.)

Resource abuse - You can't disconnect / reconnect a resource every turn for the sake of building cheap units to upgrade with excess cash.

The negative science exploit - you can run a huge deficit (-250 / turn) of negative cash with a token penalty of one lost worker / cheap building. If cash will go below zero, the research level must be dropped.

Palace Jump - You abandon the capital city to move the palace to a new location. If you want to move the palace, build a new palace.

Mass troop jumping - You can't give away a give a city to transport a large amount of troops to another landmass.

Worker blockades - You can't fortify a bunch of workers along the coast to prevent invasions, or shut down the borders with workers. The workers must be actively doing something.

You may not found and abandon a city in the same turn (this is to prevent 'crawling' your way through an AI civ's territory in 1 turn (by founding, moving a settler one tile, abandoning the city then founding a new city etc.)

You cannot gift the GLib away simply to allow you to gain a greater benefit by capturing it later. You may, however, capture the GLib as built by an AI civ at a later point in the game and receive the full benefit of doing so.

Standard LK house rules:
1) Worker automation of any kind is prohibited.

2) Our reputation is golden - please respect it.

3) You may not declare war on a civ if you are currently shipping cash and / or goods to the civ. The ONLY exception is a pure per-turn deal if it is the last war of the game. I still don't like this, but this is a concession to the SG community standards.

4) Even if not covered under exploits listed, please try not to use tactics that take advantage of holes in the game design.

Well, you said you wanted to play some war turns. ;) I'm looking forward to playing some peace turns.

Peace with China will be welcome, especially if they stay at war with the Mongols for a while. I'll see if we can take out Anyang first, as that sounds like a good idea.

I should be able to look at the save this afternoon.

Well, I didn't make peace with China.

Turn 0:
Short-rushed some knights. Swapped Amsterdam from hill to mountain so Holwerd can have the hill and get to 10 spt.

I'm surprised at how low on the power graph the Mongols are.

Move a SM and a treb toward our north central - we have no troops in case of landing.

At Lauwersoog: trebs go 4/11 vs cavalry. Vet knight 4/4 kills 3/4 cav. Vet knight kills 2/4 cav, promotes to 4/5. Elite knight 5/5 kills 2/4 cav. Elite knight 5/5 kills 2/4 cav. Vet knight 2/4 kills 4/4 cav. Knight army 9/13 kills 4/4 cav, pillages towards Anyang. Vet knight dies to 2/3 musket. Vet knight 4/4 kills 2/3 musket. Vet knight kills 4/4 longbow, promotes to 5/5. MDI army kills 4/4 musket. 9-1

IBT:
Two Chinese boats visible off to the west. 3 cavs by Lauwersoog, motion by muskets.
Knights to knights, SM to SM. New source of iron by Amsterdam. I'm pretty sure it came from Mongol territory, as they don't have any iron anymore.

Turn 1:
Trebs go 4/11 at Lauersoog. Elite knight 2/5 kills 2/4 cav. 4/5 knight loses 1 hp killing 2/4 cav. Knight army 11/13 kills 4/4 cav, advances on Anyang. 12-1

IBT:
Alliance with Mongols expires. Portuguese offer MPP; I decline. Settler to treb.

Turn 2:
Trebs advance on Anyang. Knight 4/4 kills 4/4 cav. Build New Amsterdam. Move toward Anyang. Knight army pillages Chinese ivory. 13-1

IBT: cav kills 4/4 knight, cav retreats from SM at Lauersoog. Lots of Chinese motion.
Leiden settler to settler, Den Helder harbor to treb 13-2

Turn 3:
Trade saltpeter to Babylon for world map, silks, 531 g. They are at war with the Portuguese, and I'd like them to have a little help. Trade ivory to Portugal for wines plus 3 gpt. Reduce lux slider to 20%. Put some entertainers back to work.
E knight 5/5 kills 1/4 cav. E knight 3/5 kills 3/3 cav. Vet knight dies to cav which promotes to 3/5. Vet knight 2/4 kills 3/5 cav. E knight 5/5 kills 3/5 cav. Trebs in place by Anyang. Pillage a bit. 17-3

IBT: Cav from Anyang kills SM, cav kills vet knight. Amsterdam knight to knight. 17-5

Turn 4:
Trebs go 8 of 11 at Anyang, redlining all 3 muskets :) Knight army kills 3/4 cav. E knight 1/5 kills 2/4 cav. E knight 4/5 kills 1/4 musket. E knight 4/5 kills 1/4 musket. 3/5 E knight kills 1/4 musket, takes city, kills 2 cannons, razes city for 5 workers. 24-5
China will give us metallurgy for peace + 71 gpt. We are average militarily against them and we have 11 turns left on deals with Korea and the Mongols. The Inca will give us metallurgy for iron and 127 gpt. I decide to take the Inca deal. They are at war with the Portuguese, but have several cities with harbors and the Portuguese have not made much progress against them. Trade metallurgy + 440 g to Mongols for banking.
4/4 cav kills 4/4 knight, reduces knight army to 4/13 before dying. 8/13 knight army kills 3/3 cav.
Build New Rotterdam, New The Hague. 26-6

IBT:
Cav kills 3/5 knight, promotes to 2/5. Chinese units head toward Korean territory. Lauersoog SM to MDI, Harlingen settler to settler, Delft SM to knight. 26-7

Turn 5:
Retreat trebs and workers, E knight 3/5 kills 2/5 cav. 27-7

IBT: Mongols and America sign peace. China kills 3/5 knight, continues moving against Korea, while Mongols attack them from the south. 27-8
Maastricht courthouse to knight.

Turn 6:
Pillage Chinese iron. Trebs go 3/7 against muskets, upgrade unused trebs to cannons. Vet knight 2/4 kills 3/4 musket.
Build New Utrecht. Vet knight 1/4 kills 3/4 musket. Vet MDI 2/4 kills 3/4 musket. 30-8

IBT:
See a bunch of cavs. Lots of action on Korea/China border.
The Hague knight to knight, Utrecht knight to knight.

The Inca lose their capital, and the palace jumps to the one city that is not connected to anything. Strangely, it is size 11 and their other cities are size 12. My metallurgy deal has now cost us our trading reputation.

Turn 7:
Pillage one of China's saltpeter sources. They must be trading the other away, because they don't have any now, but they do have iron. Trade banking to Korea for 457 g + 2 workers. Setting up to attack Tatung. Upgrade rest of trebs to cannons.
IBT:
Cavs retreat. Amsterdam knight to knight, Hilversum settler to settler, Eindhoven knight to knight, Arnhem market to knight, Roosendal settler to settler, Haarlem knight to knight, Holwerd knight to knight.

Turn 8:
E knight dies vs 2/3 cav, which goes to 1/3. Vet knight kills it. 31-9
Trade 720 g + 129 gpt to Babylon for military tradition. Mongols won't give astronomy for military tradition - would give it for iron + military tradition, but I don't want to have a longer deal, as both Mongols and Korea will be easy pickings after our deals with them are up.
Moving on Tatung. Upgrade some knights.
IBT: 4/4 cav attacks E knight and dies. Holwerd riots, Zwolle settler to settler. WW goes up.32-9

turn 9: Upgrade knights. Move towards Tatung.

IBT: 2 cavs die attacking knight and cav on mountain, 3rd cav kills cav. 34-10

turn 10
Attack Tatung. Knight armies kill 1 musket each. Cav kills one musket. Raze Tatung for 6 slaves. 37-10

I'm leaving units with movement as I won't have time to play this weekend.

Trading: I should have gotten astronomy instead of banking. I was thinking we'd want banks, but I didn't build any. The Mongols will give us astronomy for military tradition and iron, but I'm not sure we want to make a long term deal with them. The Inca are at war with a lot of people so we can still make per turn deals. It may be worth giving the Inca a safe town later, so our trading partners can still be at war with them.

War: China isn't doing well. I'm seeing a lot of regular cavs. They are about to lose their second saltpeter source and we just took away their spices. I think we should keep pushing. They are attacking Korea rather than us, but they haven't made a lot of progress as both Korea and the Mongols are attacking near Pyongyang. Korea and the Mongols are both weak and lacking in resources. I expect them to both collapse quickly when we invade.

We've got settlers headed for China; in a few turns we'll have the spices. Taking Pyongyang would insure China stays resourceless, though it makes it harder for China to go after K&M.

OK played my set, we are still at war with China, we can make peace for Astronomy and 9 gpt.

We have just captured Pyoang, and we have two options either Abandon or make peace with China.

I don't think I understand the options either, but we definitely want to abandon Pyongyang and resettle the area.

There were Chinese Cavalry on their way to Korea, so I dont think we can hold it.

Alternatively (I haven't looked at the save) could we gift it to another civ? If we're worried about holding it won't we lose the troops anyway if we abandon it?
Again, I haven't checked the save but if we think we can break China now then maybe it's worth it to keep pushing on. We should definitely look for techs though. Maybe make peace for a major discount on techs, then try and steal another. Even if it fails we just got the tech at a discount and have the opportunity to continue the war.

Boy - this is really moving. I envy y'alls ability to play this game at this level and thrive rather than survive. :goodjob:

If I wasn't that rusty, I would give this game a go. :)

Trade better and you might win.

gozpel posting... :salute:

hi there!
by the standards you showed in your old stories, even if you may have been rusting for years now, you should still be able to play on master level. so go ahead and apply! your fans are waiting for a comeback. ;)
