Yah a superproductive strip is a good idea. It may be unrealistic, but it's the most conventional way to make a US are while still focusing on Europe. Plus the US would still have to send reinforcement units across the Atlantic in ships, and the Soviet subs vs. the Carrier groups would be another dimension to the war. NATO can operate without reinforcements and supplies from America. Carrier groups are protection for supply and unit ships that move across the ocean, and the have Anti Submarine Warfare boats with them, making the battle even. So I'm thinking a "super strip" for the US is the route to go. Also, Iceland should start as a major NATO base (Kevflavik Air Base), which the Soviets took over in the book.
