James stared at Zora coldly. "Is that so?"
"Umm, yeah." She looked slightly disconcerted, perhaps by the sudden change in tone from the jocular manner displayed moments before. "Yeah, it was nice. And, um, I think we're a... Uh... A 'package' now," she continued, gaining confidence. "But we can still go to the movie. It'd fun! I can bring Robert!"
He wondered if she really was stupid enough to misread the situation that badly. "Uhh, yeah. Fun is exactly the word." She looked at him strangely, and looked at a loss for words.
"Look, this isn't going to change the group dynamic that much... We can still all three be friends, you know." Her voice sounded so hopeful. James was growing rather fed up. How was she that naïve? It defied logic. To think he was worried about the 'group dynamic'.
"Well, I'll see you Friday," he muttered unhappily, then walked back to his computer, showing clearly the conversation was over. He knew he was being ridiculous, that it was Zora's choice. But he'd given everything to her! Everything! Just that morning, they'd cried into each other's arms. He felt sick.
He slammed his computer shut and lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling, calculating what it meant. Obviously, Zora was infatuated. Whether the relationship would last long was another matter, but he knew it wasn't ending in the immediate future. Robert seemed like a good match, if a little slow, but he couldn't see why she'd chosen as she did. What did Robert have he didn't?
'Ugggh,' he thought, 'I'll drive myself crazy. You'll never figure out girls.' He lay in silence for a while, until Robert, the man of the hour, walked in. He sat heavily on the couch, watching soccer of all things. James ignored him, staring blankly, until the fifth exuberant shout of "GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL" in five minutes threatened to drive him insane. He leapt out of bed, grabbed his books, and headed to the park.
He stayed far, far away from where he and Zora had say the previous day, instead resting under a tree. He felt like crying, but he was sick and tired of acting like a child. Just yesterday, he'd broken down to Zora, and look his she repaid him. No, he wasn't going to cry any more. He left his bags on the bench, ready to pick a fight, and went for a walk. A loooooooong walk. Through the seediest parts of town.
He was looking for trouble, but trouble clearly east searching for him. Not even a mugging. Sighing, he headed back to the park, his pack still thankfully there. He was going to head back to his dorm, perhaps shower, but he didn't feel like facing Robert again. He wasn't sure of what to do, so he sat on the bench, studying his math, when his phone beeped.
"Hey, what's up? You seemed kind of weird?
-Zora"
Goddamnit, Zora. Couldn't you see? Are you blind? He had lost, and now it was over. Done with. The friendzone wasn't somewhere he wanted to live.
"Nothing. Just tired. You?"
"Oh, I'm great. I went over to see Robert, but he's for work to do. You weren't there?" James shook his head. Robert's too good for her, eh?
"Went to the park."
"Oh. You mind if I meet you? Kind of bored."
"Sure..."
He never was good with confrontations. But if she wasn't picking up the signs, he worried he may have to just tell her. Seriously, who offers to go meet someone at a park a day after rejecting them? The same park where they poured their hearts out to each other?
She arrived moments later, looking stunning, as ever. He smiled slightly, but his eyes were sad. She could immediately tell something was wrong. She sat down next to him, looking concerned.
"Look, Zora. You chose Robert over me. You have to accept that maybe I'm not interested in a friendship after you... denied me." He looked earnest, making it clear this wasn't a joke.
"Denied you? What are you talking about? Seriously?"
"What do you mean, asking what I mean? You know exactly what I goddamn mean."
"What?" She was genuinely confused by his convoluted wording.
"Look. It was clear we... had something. Or at least I thought we did. You can't go leading people on like that!" He seemed angry. Outraged even.
"I don't even know what you're talking about! I had no idea you even thought of me in that way!" She was telling the truth; first Robert, now James had said they found her romantically... interesting, and she hasn't even thought she was pretty!
"Don't lie to me," he said, his voice cool.
"I'm not lying, goddamnit! Why don't you believe me?" She was desperate to keep her best friend from walking away from her forever.
He turned away, and she was left staring at his back. "Listen, Zora. You're perfect. You're funny, smart, pretty, and awesome to be around. And I know it'll take a while to find someone as amazing as you, but I can't stand being friends with someone who sees me a second class. This may just be the pride talking, but it's what I feel, and I'm not going to go against it."
"James..." She didn't know what to say, but she didn't want him to leave. He turned back to face her, his deep blue eyes regarding her coldly.
I'm going to leave now, and I'd rather you didn't try to follow."
And he did leave, and she didn't follow, instead sitting on the bench watching her one and only friend (Robert wasn't exactly a friend, due to them kissing and stuff) walk away. She'd given him everything, and he just left her behind like that? How dare he?
