Heya guys, really loving the latest mod , ai is more smart. However, i am a bit confused about how unhappiness is calculated, currently playing deity vox populi , huge map with 18 civs, i have attached screenshots for better visualisation.

My total unhappiness is 35 in the image below, however if i add all the unhappiness from city breakdown, i should actually get ( 1+1+4+2+2+12+14+14+3) + 1(war weariness) = 54 unhappiness.

My only 3 occupied cities are Antanaravio, Barcelona and Caracas . How come they only count half of my unhappiness in these cities , in other words, (1+1+4+2+6+7+7+3) + 1(war weariness) to obtain 35 unhappiness? Sorry if i didnt express myself well enough!

I think with occupied cities, you "only" get unhappiness from occupation until you've built a courthouse. Once you've built a courthouse, they generate "normal" unhappiness, which can be higher than the unhappiness from occupation. So I'd hazard a guess that the higher numbers (e.g. 14 from Barcelona) represent how much unhappiness they'd give at the moment if a courthouse was already built in them.

Unrelated to your question, what civ is that? The Icon is unfamiliar to me, along with some of the city names. Is that civ from another mod?

Hi @neo_arcadia , i am just using JFD Hammurabi babylon . I am still very confused about how unhappiness is calculated , I think i should be getting more then 35. Anyone have good insights for the calculations ?:lol:

The happiness number is correct as from occupied cities, you should get half of their population as unhappiness (as LukaSlovenia pointed out). For those cities, needs don't matter and you don't get additional unhappiness (and this can, as LukaSlovenia wrote too, lead to a situation where the city generates more unhappiness after the courthouse is built). However, I don't know why the numbers shown in the happiness overview are wrong and can only guess. The numbers seem a bit off in general, also the "Occupied Citizens (20)" resolving to 23 unhappiness (?). I would stick to the unhappiness overview when hovering over the city banner.

Thank you gazebo, I think it's is working as intended , no bugs to report. Another issue to report, so is it correct to assume that if I do not build a courthouse after annexing , in mid/late games, my unhappiness will not rise(my cities are more happy)? Because I noticed every time i build a courthouse , my unhappiness becomes higher because poverty and crime is unlocked. Is this mechanic as intended?:crazyeye:

Courthouses eliminate occupation unhappiness (which is half of the polulation), but the city will have the usual unhappiness from yields afterwards (which can also be higher than half of the population). However, in cities with a reasonable infrastructure, the effect should usually be positive happiness-wise.

You may delay the courthouse, but a time shall come when that city is developed enough to be happier than you are letting it be.
