[NFP] Unique Unit Analysis

Yes, and it's extremely useful on water-heavy maps. But the camp needs to be empty. If a unit is in it, you need a Quad to kill the unit first.

But the best part is the free goody huts, especially on continents&islands or terra maps! There are so many of them on small islands or near the poles, and longships reach them much faster than any land unit ever could.

*laughs in Maori*

Hoptile:

Replaces spearman
+10 strength when adj to another Hoptile

Analysis: I can't get into a conclusion for this unit right now, combined with the new Greek strength bonus seems Hoptiles are now useful for an early rush, but not so sure.

Don't forget the "hop tile" is so named for its ability to use its spear to jump over a tile, so if played well it has triple the movement. Those Greek pole-vaulters sure were something...

UUs are the unique components of civs that excite me the least, mostly because I play peacefully (except sometimes in the earlygame when wars are "smaller"), so the only ones I'm interested in are early ones that I can use in smaller-scope wars, or ones I can use mostly defensievly like ranged units. That said, Norwegian Longship in some contexts is the best UU in the game if you can raid a bunch of mines (for science) early, which is very RNG dependant. Nubia's is also very good because they can take some potshots and then run away faster than warriors or spearmen can catch them.

This is not exactly about the unit itself but it's annoying to me that the Maori's unique fort (made by its swordsman) gets it era score as a unique building, but the Roman fort (made by its swordsman) doesn't.

Classical Era UUs:

Congo Swordsman

Replaces Swordsman
Prod 90->110
Strength 35->38
Iron Cost 20->10
+10 defense against ranged attacks
No movement penalty and sight penalty on trees/jungles

Analysis: Used to be a negative UU, but it is enhanced by quite a lot in the April patch. Now it is a not-so-bad unit.

Macedon Swordsman

Replaces Swordsman
Prod 90->100
Strength 35->38
Iron Cost 20->5
+5 attack against districts
+50% support

Analysis: This ability is much more useful than the Congo one. Combined with GG and Twilight Valor and Oligarchy the Strength on siege can be 57. Enhanced quite a lot on the Apr patch.

Legion

Replaces Swordsman
Prod 90->110
Strength 35->40
Iron Cost 20->10
Have 1 builder charge

Analysis: The 1 builder charge is a great deal for Legions. A charge worth some productions, so Legion is actually cheaper than a normal swordsman, this ability also enables Legion to fix pillaged tiles, very useful, especially under the pillage-conquer-fix-rebel-pillage cycle.

Toa

Replaces Swordsman
Prod 90->120
Strength 35->38
Iron Cost 20->0
Unlock at Construction
Have 1 builder charge
-5 for nearby enemies

Analysis: Construction requires much more science than iron working, however Toa is the strongest swordsman. It also has a builder charge. The pillage-conquer-fix-rebel-pillage cycle is extremely powerful for Maori, as it can easily get some cities with low loyalty.

Immortal

Replaces Swordsman
Prod 90->100
Iron Cost 20->10
Can perform ranged attack(range 2 strength 25)

Analysis: The ability to perform ranged attack is good. Though it does not produce much damage, it offers a way for front-line soldier to do sth. other than simply staying there. This unit is also enhanced by a lot in Apr patch.

Varu

Uses heavy-cav promotion tree, however we compare it with swordsman

Prod 90->120
Strength 35->40
Iron Cost 20->0
Unlock at Horseback riding
-5 for nearby enemies
Against anti-cav +5->-10

Analysis: Compared with the Apr-updated Toa, a Varu seems weaker, +2 strength but 1 less builder charge. However it unlocks much earlier. An early powerful unit without resource cost, so you don't need that black market and can therefore spend your governor title on Pingala and accelerates early game more.

Hetaroi

Replaces Horseman

Prod 90->100
Horse Cost 20->10
1 free promotion
Uses heavy cav promotion tree
+5 when the battlefield is adj to a GG
+5 GG point when defeating enemy

Analysis: A very useful early-game UU. 1 free-pomotion half-resource horseman is good enough especially after the Apr nerf of Swordsman, the heavy-cav promotion tree is also better as it contains the siege +7,

and we also have +5 when the battlefield is adj to a GG and +5 GG point when defeating enemy, both very useful skills.
