If you're warmongering, you should only be able to build musketeers for 10-12 turns (or more like 0-8 if you're doing it right) before you get to rifles. And those musketeers that you built will have given you literally no benefit over normal muskets once you upgrade them, unlike Janissaries, Minutemen, and even Tercios (which have no advantage over a pike once upgraded to rifles). Trying to salvage the unit by bringing them out into the field where they can't be upgraded once you get rifling until you march them back to your territory, and where they can get picked off, isn't a worthwhile strategy compared to waiting a couple extra turns to upgrade them to rifles (along with all your longswords/pikemen) or using GSes/Oxford/RAs to bypass the unit entirely.

As far as I can see, this is the only unit on the list that will give you literally no benefit if you play well.

I don't get it. We're voting to eliminate a particular UU right? Why the heck are we using this system?

It has proved an effective method of determining not only the best UU, but the exact order. And it's fun.

I wish I could save SotL, but it appears to be going the way of the Titanic. A sad fate for the only naval UU...

I agree, musketeers are VERY situational at best. Minutemen are useful enough that I will often delay rifling to get a few of them built, and janissaries are so awesome that I'll often delay rifling indefinitely. Musketeers are more like landsmacktcht, they're absolutely killer in the hands of the AI with their huge unit/production bonuses, but with a human they're more "meh" at best.

I think we should all use the goodjob and sniper smilies instead of bold/color tags, because bold/color tags are tedious to remove for the next voter. Not really a big deal, but just sayin'

BTW, a shortcut for typing the smilies is :"goodjob": and :"sniper":, without the quotation marks.

I kind of cheated at this game by making all UUs go obsolete at future tech :mischief: - so I can make Janissaries forever (and the AI can make their UUs forever too)

It turned out that the Otts were becoming REALLY OP after this change, so I nerfed Janissaries by changing their ability to the Jaguar's partial heal rather than full heal. I kept the attack bonus, however. I think this method works better than Civ 5's silly concept of units going obsolete.

I'm saving the SotL because of the only real argument they have in their favour: it's the only naval UU.

What is with all of the America hate in these threads? I seriously don't see why the musketeer is ahead of the minutemen. If you place the units side by side, a three-sight unit that ignores terrain costs is undoubtedly better than a higher strength unit that loses all uniqueness upon upgrading.

I feel like people are lumping the minutemen in with the general distaste for America.
