Unit Editing

I just want to point out that you are getting support here from two of the most experienced & consistently productive members of the community. They are reposting here what used to be available in tutorial threads (now buried) based on many years of hard work by themselves & others.

EDIT: Gimp use to place the Transparent color on the Top Left. I am not sure if the Newest version still does that but it seems to me that would help you for the DH Palettes you are making. It would speed the process because the Transparent and Shadow colors would already be indexed and the Unit Colors.
As noted here the more recent versions of GIMP now use the same order as most other programs. Slots 254 & 255 where the invisible colors belong are in the lower right.

Blue Monkey... Thank You for that Update concerning Gimp.
The Transparent Color for Units is Just One Slot, the Last one for our Civ Units, however, The DH game uses the Transparent Slot as the first Slot then the next Slot is for Shadow.
... just trying to help if possible.
Hope all is well with you and Life is going Great :)

Yes, the Palettes can be difficult until one gets accustomed to making them for various Game Graphics.
One thing that can throw people off is the Unit Palettes only use one Transparent Color at the end while Improvements and Wonders use two Transparent Colors at the end.

Then there's the whole smoke & civ color positions to keep straight. Thank goodness we've got you to give such clear explanations.
 Blue Monkey... That is not difficult... One thing people need to know is that the Palettes are Hard Coded (as so many things are) for the areas in them. Example: The "Smoke, Fog and Shadow shades will show the Alpha .pal palette color in Game regardless of what colors you place in the .pal palette. This means you can make Rainbow colors on the .pal palette for those areas and they will still show as the Normal Smoke, Fog and Shadow shades in game.

Fun with Palettes 101 eh? :)

Guess I am getting sort of off topic here but it all does have meaning concerning Unit Editing... in a round about manner.
