Unit File Type

I have become interested in creating unit graphics, but first I need to know what program (preferably free) I could use (I currently know how to use Maya and Blender, so either of those would be good ). And also what type of files I need (if that matters)

Shoot a PM over to danrell or bernie14. They're the only ones who can make unit graphics.
