I wanted to see a tech-tree-style layout of all the units in Civ V showing upgrade paths, era's, etc. Since I couldn't find one I made one myself and thought I'd post it here in case anyone's interested.

[Edit] Added in the scout and the unique upgrade paths from Ancient Ruins

[Edit2] Added in all the upgrade paths for Ancient Ruins according to CIV5Units.xml and also attached the vsd in the rar in case anyone wants it :)

[Edit3] October 27, 2010 - Updated to 1.0.0.621
- Added Mongolian Keshik
- Changed Chariot Archer, War Chariot, War Elephant, and Camel Archer from the Mounted to Archery unit type.

Nice.

There are also scouts.

Upgrades via ruins also take different paths:
Scout->Archer
Warrior->Spearman

That's pretty awesome, thanks for making it! I'm thinking of making a similar chart for buildings that have specialist slots, but I don't have the time at the moment :sad:

Thats awesome!!! THX!!! If this could be converted to a mod so you could just click an icon to see it like the tech tree for quick reference in-game that would be great.

Yeah, I forgot that the goody huts take a different path there. I added in the scout and the different upgrade paths from huts.

Yeah, something like that would be pretty handy in the game, but I'm not a modder :(

Cool, thanks a lot! I have no idea why this wasn't someone in the game... isn't this kind of thing exactly the point of the Civilopedia?

Regardless, excellent job!

Not that it's ever relevant in a game, but does anyone know what happens to Lancers & Paratroopers when they get a Ruin upgrade?

I see I missed that one. According to CIV5Units.xml the Lancer/Sipahi will upgrade to Cavalry through ruins, but that upgrade can't be bought with gold. Very strange, doesn't seem like much of an upgrade to me. If I'm reading this right, when it upgrades it to a Cavalry it would:
1) Reduce Movement from 4 -> 3 (5->3 for the Sipahi)
2) Retain the additional PROMOTION_DEFENSE_PENALTY from the Lancer.
3) Increase Strength from 22 -> 25

The paratrooper has no upgrade path either way.

4) Gain the 50% penalty vs Mounted that Cavalry have.

Not much of an upgrade. Even more true for Turkish Sipahi. It would be better if both Lancers and Cavalry upgraded to Tanks.

yes, tanks would be much more useful if we could take our lvl8 horsemen->knights->cavalry and upgrade them. would be very OP imho, however. A few tanks with 5 mvmt, blitz, heals double every turn whether he moves or not, and +65% in one or both types of landscape would roll just about anybody, anytime.

I went through the XML and verified the Ancient Ruins upgrades (Goody Hut's) and updated the OP. I also added a rar with the vsd inside if anyone feels like messing with it.

It's starting to look like this is exactly what was intended. According to the XML, you should be able to upgrade a Cavalry unit to a Tank on Ancient Ruins. Both the Lancer/Sipahi and Cavalry/Cossack have Ancient Ruins upgrades that are not available by a gold purchase.

It really seems like the Mounted units were originally intended to upgrade into the Armored units path. Although you're right, the game balance was probably way off so this was the quick fix.

I updated the chart for 1.0.0.621:
- Added Mongolian Keshik
- Changed Chariot Archer, War Chariot, War Elephant, and Camel Archer from the Mounted to Archery unit type.

I also checked and the odd Lancer -> Cavalry -> Tank via Goody Huts only is still there.

Ooh .. I've turned off ruins since day 1, but this got me thinking.

Might try to upgrade scouts with survivalism.
Maybe even with morale as well ...

Seriously tempted to try getting a whole bunch of rifles that ignore terrain costs and heal extra.

upgraded scouts rock indeed. it's pretty handy to have one (or when extremely lucky, 2 or more) archers that can ignore terrian. very usefull when placed in rough terrian to defend, and also in some ways to scout (just be careful not to lose them).

Very cool, thanks!

I did have some trouble seeing the difference between the white->purple and white->blue arrows. I’d consider switching the former to purple->white. Maybe “does not become obsolete” is a little confusing too, and “end of upgrade path” would be less so. But that’s just personal opinion, nothing particularly important.
