Unit preview: Medieval war galley

I like it a lot, but I just don't really like that type of sail. A lot of people do, so that's okay. Disgarding the sail, it's absolutely perfect.

:) :goodjob:

That will fit nicely in Reconquista for the second era ! So thanks.
BTW in case you are interested in doing an earlier ship (I don't have that many ideas about it though, something like the first ships used for the Crusades, limited to caostal waters...) that would be real nice.

Hmmm...

I think I'm going to pull the Galleass I have for the early Galleass and make that the Heavy Galleass, and then make the Heavy Galleass a Spanish Galleass unique unit. And then put this in as the early Galleass....

or else maybe I might make a "Medieval War Galley" that comes after the regular War Galley (Smoking Mirror's) but before the Galleass... so many decisions ;).

Awesome!

And you're going to do an English War Galleon?!? Too cool!

Well, why not. I was also thinking about making it a bit shorter. Then the one-sailed-version would be very appropriate indeed :)

[edit]: oh, the wonderous variety of google search. typing "war galley" in the image search results almost all types of sailing ships from triremes to modern yatchs.

On second thought, I don't know if there existed medieval galleys with only one latin sail...? Or can't I just find pics of those? (I returned the Björn Landström-book to the library, and IIRC it had only two-sailed medieval galleys - mind you that it's the best book about the subject - ships from 8000 BC to this date - ever done).

Show me one picture of a one-sailed medieval galley (with latin sails), and I'll do one for you :p ;)

 ;) :p Fine...

Btw, I think i found a galley like this one with one sail searching 'carrack' into google :p

My bad... It was two-sailed :o

Here they are:

Your talent and ambition continues to amaze me, sir aaglo!

I'm with Gogf on the sail... perhaps adding flags (as in vbraun's
pictures would help make them seem less... cartoony.

Great work man :goodjob:

Yoda - your phoenician is among many others - like: Golden hind (english war galleon), roman trireme and some sort of chinese junk-like ship.

Does this mean you are sticking to ships for awhile, or are you still open to other types of units?

Out of these two, the one with two sails.

However, the one with the one sail would look very good if the sail was larger or the hull smaller. Currently it feels like it doesn't have quite enough sails for its size.

Heh... I decided, since it's not too much work with the new version of pov-ray (I downloaded the version 3.5, and it's much-much faster in animations than version 3.1 which I've been using so far), to do both versions.

If you have nothing against it, that is :)

So, here are some animations of the one-sailed version, but there are some changes to the preview above:
- bigger sail
- narrower castles in stern and bow

The two-sailed will be pretty much like this, but with two sails - hence the name two-sailed galley :crazyeye:

Excellent. Nothing to criticize.
