Lookin' good, Kinboat!
I agree with Xen, I'd love to see a WWI version and a more modern version.

This looks great as WWI infantry. And has been said before no modern soldier would wear all that get-up, certainly not a WWII soldier. A modern Roman soldier's kevlar vest might retain some of the design elements of the old armor, but only as an homage to the past. The suits they are making today have been pretty well designed for maximum effectiveness and movement.

let's try and keep the language clean there, buddy.Xen said:my mian thing is ancient and medieval, latter periods arnt as much known by me, or perhaps youd like to continue being a jackass?

The pugio idea sounds good, and I by no means ever meant to suggest that the modern unit should not have armor, of course he should have some form of body armor, just not as bulky as that worn by the current model. Now, if this were going to be a future Roman Legionaire, then in that case I would have no problem jumping back to the bulkier looking armor, e.g. the US's latest Land Warrior system.Xen said:as far as the unit goes
A)I agree, a sword on a modern unit would be weird- however, I would support either a Pugio (a wide bladed dagger used more or less when in close striaght, it was needed to virtually gut the enemy) or a cross between a pugio, and a modern military darre design wise, and perhaps half the legth of a common gladius
B)as far as armour goes, I imagine that a moder legionary would be wearing th emost effective armour availible- even in our age of kevlar body armour, metal reinforcemtn plates are still needed- just ask riot squads- the design on the modern legions armour, if you look at it, is made so that the legionary can bend over unimpeeded, while still being fully covered

As for form, it probably would be pared down some, to about 2 foot, as it is only 3 foot long including the handle! Not like the 5 foot long Swords people are thinking about. Remember the Gladius was designed for close in fighting, not like the other swords made then. Trim down it's size and i can see plenty of uses for it, even on an equilivent Roman modern battlefield.
Also the Romans were VERY keen on tradition so would probably make all their equipment look like some form of the imperial era versions. Also consider this. The Romans would most likely keep their non-citizens unarmed, so why waste bullets when you can give your troops some needed sword fighting training.

cool idea, interesting to hear that a modern soldire had want of a short sword on his duties...aaglo said:About the use of close-combat weapons:
In finnish army, they even taught us to use the small shovel (carried by every soldier) as a weapon - yep, it has quite a punch with the sharp edge
And in the officer school, some of us were carrying an axe instead of the shovel. Now THAT'S a weapon you would be surprised to see in a modern battlefield.

the finnish UU- Aaglo the modern finish berserker!- actually, considering the lacation, and the fact that axes are still distributed to troops in boder armies, makes it the perfect choice for a modern type Viking UU
that said, did you have an axe while you were in the army (as it sounds like you were/are), and if so, I'm just curious about if you have a picture of it

Imagine a future Roman unit, wearing red armor similiar to Star War's Boba Fett(Only with a Crest of coarse), and armed with a Gladius version of a lightsaber, as well as a Laser Rifle...
Or even Roman Themed Mecha...

I agree- if the secret of the ancient Roman legions was the versitilty to poerate in the same manner rain or shine from the moutains of Britain, the forests of Germany, the Hills of Italy, or the deserts of Nubia, I would suppose the secret of a more modern legion success would be similer, yet expanded versitility
