Quick question on the polys. Can units that have say between 8,000 to 10,000 polys be used with Civ 4? If so, what is the result of having say 15-20 units that high on the game? Does the game freeze or just goes slower than usual?
Argh! I think I'm going to have to get back into the unit-making business.... I've been wanting to try to get my mod going before I worked on the units for it, but me working with code is like having a horse as a surgeon... I'm an artist and a unit-maker!
I've already been working on a Korean turtleboat... I could maybe take a crack at the Galleass.
It'll take some time however since I have zero experience turning models into units for Civ4.
My plans of stealing the rigging/sails from an existing model and building a Galleass or Carrack around that is slow in happening. Since I have yet to even dabble in animating I'd hate to simply make a static, boring ship if someone else is going to be able to do a better job.
I started working on this unit... I have no experience animating and converting Civ4 units, so it could be a while before this is a real working unit... I'm also not done with the modelling process either.
Looks good Dom Pedro II, very good model
The only criticism I have is that the unit you have there looks much more like a regular galley (the historical type, not the civ type) than a galleas. The galleas was the equivalent of a battleship, and for the era it represented somewhat of a hybrid between a regular galley and a ship of the line.
The Galleas usually had 3 or more masts, and also had raised fore and aftcastles. It was also just generally huge and wide.
With all of that said, my opinion is that the unit you are making there looks like a perfect Mediterranean galley for about the middle ages and renaissance time period.
Yes, as I said, this is a very early model. There's still a lot of work to do, but I just thought I'd show people that I am indeed working on it
The model is actually a modified Caravel unit... I've elongated the hull and added a duplicate of the main mast of the Caravel. There is also a third and smaller mast behind the first two which seemed to be in keeping with the pictures I was looking at for a Galleass.
