units not displayed

i loaded up a saved game, and while cities are displayed, units aren't. they're there, to all intents and purposes, they can move, attack etc etc but are completely invisible. ai units are invisible too! this is fairly unnerving because huge ai stacks can attack out of nowhere! has this happened to anyone else, and is there a patch? i uninstalled and reinstalled, and looked for an update, to no avail.

i'm running vista, 2.4g intel core 2, 4gb , ati radeon hd 3470

in the lower right hand corner just above (below?) the minimap there is a row of buttons - one of them toggles the bare map mode on and off - try that...
