hows a about haveing units be able to rebel and either defect to another nation or become barbarians, and have ships be able to do the same (ships would either defect or become pirates

Thoughts?!?!? good bad great horrible

I think this is a good idea, and could be some kind of semi-random event. For instance, if your units have a low morale, if you're not spending much on the military, if you have the units stationed very far away from your 'home province' and/or if you have the units stationed in a city WITHOUT a barracks, then the chance of desertion/coup should definitely be high. You should also be able to bribe another civs units to defect/rebel-within the Espionage screen. You could also effectively 'bribe' your own units into rejoining the fold too, though.
From a historical perspective, defection/rebellion of military units has brought down many civilian governments. Nero, for example, was brought down by rebelling armies in the north, and Venezuala's President was kidnapped by his military in 2000-and lets not forget General Pinochet in Chile!

well i know one thing if we used ur idea on how to do that this would never happen to my military and of course u would have to take diffucluty setting how how random\fequently this occurs

Never say 'never', my good Colonel :D ! If a nation wanted to throw your nation into chaos, and they possessed the money to do it, then they would almost certainly get SOME units to defect/rebel. Even so, I think its good that with good management you can all but prevent units from rebelling/defecting. Otherwise, people would be certain to HATE the idea!

i think it may just be irritating to be honest, im normally for de imperialisation etc. but... i dunno, lossing a spearman and then having to use 20 archers (unless of course they get rid of super spearmen) would be extremely annoying

i think with this idea they would have to make an exception units like say workers settlers

i agree that this idea would sometimes would get annoying but think to the advantage it would make it so u could make enemy units rebel and add a new aspect to invadeing a country

simple strategy

- before u attack start usein money to get alot of defection then a massive invasion simple

I wouldn't like it. Too annoying. And the less you spend on the military, the more vital each unit becomes.

The had unit bribing in civ2, which I am happy to do without. Enslavement or capturing works better.

I think the idea is not bad. There should be the possibility of countries breaking apart, civil war and so on - some people already posted concepts on this. Your idea would fit in that context. But it needs to be checked if it is good in a greater context regarding other new features and so on.

This assumes that the AI has the cash lying around, which in and of itself is a rarity ;)
