I've had Civilization 3 for a long time yet I haven't noticed that when you press "y" when a unit is selected it "skips a turn" and when you press "Redo" it causes a unit to "fortify".
(NOTE: Not everyone has an "Undo" and "Redo" key)

Does the same thing happen on Conquests and/or PTW?
My version is 1.29f.

Oh yeah you're right it doesnt "skip" but "sentry". I forgot about the enemy unit that came up to it. However that command isn't in the Civlopedia, Instruction Manual, or the GOTY hotkey layout. It probably is in PTW and Conquests.

Yea, just like E makes that unit explore, but sometimes it moves one space and then you have to push it again. There are buttons not listed, I wonder what they all are?

In Conquests, Y will put a unit on sentry, will sleep until enemy unit comes by.

Actually, pressing Y will activate the unit if any other unit approachs, enemy or not. Shift Y will only activate it with an enemy unit near, ignoring freindly units.

Actually Nate "E" is listed as "Explore/Espionage" also "Ctrl E" establishes an embassy. It is listed in the instruction manual, GOTY command card. However you are partly right in that it does not mention in the Civlopedia.

PTW has an extended commands options where you see all the available commands.

J and ctrl-j are group moves that are not shown, though.

The delete key toggles off the buttons and the minimap.
