Having too much free time, I stumbled upon some interesting unused files having to do with Great Writers and Great Musicians. I had suspected that there were more works of writing and music, because we knew that Christine de Pizan and Abdul Muis had been removed from the game at one point and that a few musicians had alternative works in the text files.

Well, it turns out that not just a few, but all musicians have recordings of three, not two, great works in the audio database, and that there are actually even recordings of quotes from more modern great writers, all of whom died after the 1940s. Presumably these modern writers had to be taken out before the game released due to copyright issues. This opens the possibility for somebody else to mod these things back into the game, since the audio files are all there. Note that the quotes are not read by Sean Bean, but the quality is still solid.

To access the files, one needs to decompile the Unit_Bank_Common xml file for the great works of music, and the Speech_Localized xml file for the removed great writers.

So, here's what I found.

Unused Great Works of Music:

Yatsuhashi: "Midare"
Vivaldi: Cello Sonata No. 5
Bach: Toccata and Fugue in D minor
Mozart: Piano Sonata No. 11
Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 8
Chopin: "Heroic" Polonaise, Op. 53
Liszt: Transcendental Étude No. 9 (note: audio mistakenly used for Hungarian Rhapsody No. 1)
Gomes: Il Guarany
Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture (note: audio mistakenly used for 1812 Overture)
Liu: "Bei Ge"
Schumann: Piano Sonata in G minor
Dvorak: Piano Trio No. 3
Rosas: "Dos pensamientos"
Lili'uokalani: "Aloha Oe"
Leontovych: "Summer Colors"
Jaan: "Thumri"

Removed Great Writers:

John Steinbeck: East of Eden, The Grapes of Wrath
Sigrid Undset: Kristin Lavransdatter, The Axe
Agatha Christie: The Mysterious Affair at Styles, The Secret Adversary
Gabriela Mistral: "Sonnets of Death," "Slow Rain"
Karen Blixen: "The Dreamers," Out of Africa

Well, it turns out that not just a few, but all musicians have recordings of three, not two, great works in the audio database.

I wonder if originally all the Great Musicians can create 3 Musics instead of 2. And FXS devs removed the 3rd Music later, realizing that one will never have enough Great Music slots to house that many Great Musics.

Yes! Someone please mod these back in!

And it must have been painful to remove Toccata and Fugue. I would have had a hard time choosing which pieces to cut.

Another random thing I found: apparently Cornelius Vanderbilt has an entire civilopedia entry written out for him. I couldn't find anything about what his ability as a great merchant would be, though. I thought I might find something on W. R. Hearst instead, because we knew that he had been replaced with Mary Katherine Goddard during development (they had the same ability of raising diplo visibility), but nope.

But all that reminds me that, weirdly, every great merchant from the modern era is American, including the two removed/alternative candidates: Goddard, Breedlove, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, and Hearst. Would love to see some more geographically diverse figures in the New Frontier pass.
