[UP] Social policy game option deceptive

The game option "No Social Policy Saving" implies that the default behavior allows social policy saving. It does not. The default game behavior still prevents saving social policies (as in unmodified G&K) but the modified tooltip implies otherwise.

On the reverse side, enabling the option allows one to save social policies. Again, unmodified game behavior is shown but the descriptive text has changed.

I have the latest version of UP from the steam workshop.

Welcome to the forums brainiac! :goodjob:

Thanks for bringing this up. It's sort of difficult to change the game defaults, because changes made to the xml don't work as they should. I have to do some tricky code things to get it to switch. It worked in vanilla, so G&K probably broke something. I'll investigate this further.

Update: did you try right-clicking the "adopt policy" button? I did this and was able to continue to the next turn.

I've found that bonus policies (like the one from completing the Oracle) cannot be saved. Maybe that's the issue?

And here was me thinking that the UP disabled that feature...

The one above is a screenshot from the setup options of the STD game.

The one above is taken when using the UP.

Note that the option for policies is now further down the list named "No policy saving" and that is off.

So even though the option is selected appropriately I should have been right clicking on the "Adopt Policy" button to allow the game to continue....?

I assumed that the UP simply disables that function...?

mmm the button labelling seems counter intuitive as it works the opposite way that I assumed it would from its description.

You might want to relabel that if you can Thal as I had always assumed that I could no longer save policies with the UP as the std labelling had changed and the option to not select the "No Policy Saving" seemed appropriate.

First, notice in your second screenshot the option "No Policy Saving" which has migrated further down the list. As of CivUP 36 both options have been switched to allow Policy and Promotion saving by default. You must select the options to force you to choose as soon as they become available.

I have not had any trouble using either of these options (default, allowing saving) in the previous or current versions.

Thanks :)

But policy saving, for me, when using the latest (build 37) of the UP is not enabled by default - that option to select "No policy saving" is unticked and it will not allow me to right click the option to play on if I do not make the following change...

When I then manually tick that option in the advanced setup I then get the working right click option to save my policies (at least to dismiss the need to select one) - it just seems to work the opposite way that I expect, with the wording being as it is.

So by default using the UP build 37 I setup my game and I can't save a social policy.

If I manually tick the option to "No policy Saving" I can now right click to dismiss the policy.

I reversed it from the default because policy saving is a game feature, and most of those advanced game options disable features. I tested this by:

  1. Started a game (without advanced settings).
  2. Gave myself 100 culture with the tuner.
  3. Right-clicked the new policy notification.
  4. Clicked next turn a few times.
It appeared to work okay.

Maybe if you use those advanced settings then it causes the behaviour as I described...?

I tend to need to use those advanced settings to select options needed for the map etc I wish to play on.

As long as it works that fine, it is just worded in a way which is confusing when you select any of the advanced options.

I agree that enabling a "do not use this" option creates somewhat of a confusing situation. I would change it if I could, but my attempts to change default options were unsuccessful.
