Most of the city names maps were created 3 - 4 years ago and since then, our map has seen quite a few updates/revisions. We should revisit the city names maps and update those.

The issue with the maps is that many maps overlap, Byzantium, Ottomans, Arabia, Cordoba, Spain .... hence we should make sure to have those as closely aligned as possible. This is easy (requires little skill) although tedious process. If anyone is interested to help with certain regions, please say so and I will give you what you need. We specifically need someone to help with Lithuania and Poland, those should be by far the worst.

The Turk as offered to edit the Arabian map around Egypt, however, this means that the Byzantine and Ottoman maps should also be updated. Also note that currently the Balkans are horribly wrong, but I will adjust those myself. I did the original maps for Byzantium, Bulgaria and Turkey, so it would be easy enough for me.

INSTRUCTION ON HOW TO EDIT THE FILES
- make sure to use a current version of RFCE, then download the WorldBuilder (WB) file (unzip if needed)
- double-click on the WB file should get you to a civ selection screen
- select Byzantium
- then without doing anything (just tell the Pope to go away), without giving any orders or whatsoever, enter the WB mode
- then edit the labels, select a label from the top-left menu, right-click to remove a label, left-click to add a label
- when you are done with the changes, save the file and post it here for me to add to the rest of the code
- you can do the changes in several sessions so long as you select Byzantium and don't do anything

Great, then I will post my updated hungarian maps
I have to adjust the neighbours' maps where they overlap anyway, so I will rather make a general overhaul to Venezia, Austria and Poland instead
You take care of Bulgaria and the European parts of Byzantium and Turkey, right?

I could do the German area I think. (if it's on the todo list)

but..

Will the German map be updated? If so it doesn't make much sense to create the namemap yet.

AbsintheRed was going to do Anatolia first, then you can do Germany I guess. You should work together to make sure you don't cross-post changes. Just be mindful of giving too much or too little resources and how it can affect the balance.

City names should come after an update to the terrain (and should be synchronized across, like Austria/Germany/Poland and France). I will post the new city name maps as soon as we get the terrain.

Yes, papa1 said he would do those
But I haven't seen him around in the past month, so if you want to do it it would be great ;)

I can update the german map too
What's your suggestion, how should we improve it?

Something like this, but i'm really not satisfied with it.
The main changes would be the altered flow of the Ems, added the Weser and slightly changed the flow of the Oder.
but..
The spot for Groningen is gone (thus shrinking the Netherlands) and the area between Rhine and Weser is still 1tile too thin :/

I set a couple of city names as landmarks

The main 'issue' would be the namemaps, but that partially leads to the map itself.
Leipzig area(9 locations for Leipzig), Berlin area(Berlin almost coastal city i.e.), Swabia and everything east of the Oder is pretty off (if the Austrian namemaps are similar to the german ones, which seems to be the case)

Be mindful of the effects of those changes. One tile sometimes can really mess up a small civ like the Netherlands. Unless the situation is outrageously ageographical, gameplay should win.

not really sure in which thread to put this
the idea is that maybe someone who knows the area possibly supports the claim that it's worth changing the map

I've mentioned a few times that a river (the Weser) is missing on the map, the Ems however is there(the Ems being the dutch border)
I don't really know how to put it in english (german isn't allowed, right?) but it's important :) both historically and geographically
the 'history' of this area I currently live in goes back to the 8th century along with Charles the Great etc. (not mentioning the Romans)

1st point, the two german wikipedia links on the Ems and the Weser. Simply compare the amount of information. (the english versions have much less info, especially historical.)

Ems:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ems#Flussverlauf

Weser:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weser

2nd point, Compare the lengths of the two rivers
Ems: 371km (206km shipable)
Weser: 452km (completely shipable "Bundeswasserstraße")

3rd point, somewhat separate from the two others
Around the area where Berlin usually gets settled is a river flowing from west to east into the Oder.
what river is that supposed to be?
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oder

I can only think of the Spree(river in Berlin which ends somewhere but not in the Oder)
or the Oder-Havel channel

there is effectivly a water/channel based connection between the Ems and the Oder.
Dortmund-Ems-Kanal - Mittellandkanal - Elbe-Havel-Kanal - Havel-Oder-Kanal
but that was dug in the 19th or 20th century I think (at least the Mittelland part)
The Weser isn't part of this system because it's no use (flows south to north)
They cross eachother however :)

I have to agree, the Ems is really unimportant compared to the Weser. The latter is much wider and goes through many cities that were important in the Middle Ages, like Minden, Verden and Bremen. Frisia on the other hand (the region the Ems passes through) was comparatively sparsely settled.

any idea what river that's supposed to be that flows into the Oder @ Leoreth?

AbsintheRed was doing the maps. I don't know if I will be able to do much this weekend, but he should be able to do it.

3Miro if you upload Norse+Sweden I could look over them. I have some ideas of what to do with the Crimea area.

This is for the city names, or do you also want to change the map itself. For the map itself, you have to sync with AbsintheRed.

I will upload the city names tonight.

My geography on East Germany is a bit off, but I can't see any major river it could represent, so I'd go with your theory that it's a misattributed canal.

Yep, we already consulted with Daffy in PMs about this
I will look into the german part of the map too. Any other suggestions regarding that area?
