Use of BC(E) and AD/CE

On the assumption that Jesus was born on 25 December, he would have been circumcised on 1 January, making this a convenient date from which to count. In theory, then, Jesus was born on 25 December 1 BC and circumcised on 1 January AD 1.

Didn't January 1 onlt become the New Year in the 1700s? I thought that before then, the new year began in March (also why OCTober is the tenth month

So no one's saying "People don't realize it's based on Jesus' birth, dur dur dur!". They're saying, "People don't particularly mind using Jesus' birthday for a calendar. They do mind calling him "Lord"".

And if you can't see the difference, I don't know what to tell you.

I don't think the term AD (Anno Domini) is used in any other language besides english. And even knowing what it means it doens't offent me, as an atheist, in the slightest. Why should I be offfended over some an obscure reference to some alleged lord I don't recognize anyway? Followers of any religions who may be offended are welcome to continue counting the years from their own culturally relevant events. Renaming "AD" to "CE" is just a cosmetic change, the history of the reference point remains the same. Let those offended use the "after christ" used in every other language instead of making up some "common era".

btw it was the jews who came up with the "CE/BCE" thing, but that was over 100 years ago, i don't know who decided to start using it again.

Certainly not Christians or Muslims who think of Jesus as an important figure. Jews thought of him iirc as a scholor and teacher so i'm curious as to how they'd be offended.

Besides people from other religions/athiests should not question his role on history.

Anyway back to the OP's second question, what do you guys think the next change of calender will be? I already stated my opinion of "the first contact with aliens". What do you think?

I think the problem that the Jews have is the precise terminology. "Christ" derives from Χριστός (Khristós), which is the Greek translation of משׂיח (Mashiach, meaning "Messiah") in both the Septuagint and the New Testament. The Jews, of course emphatically deny that Yeshuah (as they call him) was the Messiah; at most, they say, he was a very wise if possibly heretical rabbi. And the significance of "Anno Domini" is offensive to both Jews (who deny his being the Messiah let alone the Lord incarnate) and Muslims (who while accepting Jesus as the Messiah of the Old Testament deny his divinity or his sovereignty over mankind--that is God's and God's alone).

I think we'll use the Gregorian for as long as we keep records. A close second is the establishment of a world government (which is far in the future if it ever happens at all), and even then simplicity could mean that we'd still use Gregorian. Changing dates and rectifying calendars is a major hassle.

I think you misunderstood me, i meant, when will we have a new system? As in AD/BC or CE/BCE. Perhaps it would be BC (for Before Contact) and AC(after Contact)?

After the King returns, Gondor and Arnor are re-united, and Sauron defeated.

I meant "We will probably never have a new system, and if we do it will come with the establishment of a world government." Better?

I'll always use Anno Domini, it's the least I can do to protest agains the satanisation of society.

Personally I use AD simply because that is the one I am used to (I’m not a Christian btw). I don’t have a problem with people using CE either, my problem is with people who force you to use the BCE/CE system, i.e. over zealously PC university professors and the like.

Maybe we should stop all this controversy and switch to the Mayan long count or something. :p

It would be cool to use the Mayan calendar :mischief:

BTW, which Mayan calendar site is a reliable one? They all give me different dates for today :(
