Hi guys,
As you will see on my intro, I work in marine survey. My work has started to take on the production of 3d models of some of the wrecks we have found. It seems there are scant models available for some of the ships I might be looking for. For example, I routinely survey the WW1 Battleship HMS Russell. I cannot find a model for her. I did however find an Italian ship Giuseppe Garibaldi which is modeled here. We survey the G.G. this summer in the Adriatic and I am planning to use a company called Real Sim (http://www.realsim.ie/home) to try and produce a working G.G. which we will then torpedo and sink. Anyway, you see where I am going.
My experience has been that it is the enthusiasts that are the most active in the aspects of navel history etc.
Are the Civ models based on a common format such as Obj or 3DS?
Thanks for your time.

civ5 use .gr2, but most models are available in .blend format.

I'm not an expert, but here is my understanding:

The models for Civilization V are in a proprietary format, Granny (GR2), which prevents the easy export of Firaxis' models. With the tools provided, we can convert to GR2 only from Autodesk FBX format. The tutorials are written for the free software modeller Blender (I imagine simply because it is free), and the community templates are in Blender's .blend format. It's not exactly trivial to get a static 3D model into the game, but animations are obviously the hard part, so the templates are important if you want to save time and headache and reuse CiV's built-in animations (or use danrell's edited animations).

I cannot say for Civ5 what format they use. But for myself my models are .0bj but they are used to produce the animated files that civ3 use.

I downloaded the Italian Cruiser from you. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to contact you directly though. Is there a .obj or 3ds for that model?

You need to have 5 posts to contact me directly I believe. There is an .obj file of the boat but only I have it. The other issue it is not my model I list in the credits who did what. So it is not mine to give away freely.

OK. I'll gladly compensate whoever it is I need to. And if you are interested, I will provide you with the image of the wreck as it now sits off the coast of Croatia. And the recreation of the vessel in the 3D gaming engine when it is done. That is if you are interested. As I cannot actually contact anyone directly yet. If you could pass that along.

G.

I will talk to the person who supplies some the 3d models in particular about the Italian cruiser. I would give you the models that I have personally built but they need a lot of reworking and are mostly French and Russian.

What about the Duncan Class Battleships? I have the wreck of the HMS Russel (plus dive footage) that we surveyed. Italian WW2 Transport - I have the wreck of the Rosandra (featured on my web page).

Evening Ebonhand, unfortunately my backer does not want to share the models at this time and yes there is a Duncan class in the works from them. However that being said I will share any of the ones I built and can always help with info and some plans. I have spent many years collecting articles on the Warships I work with so I do have some plans for the Duncan and Italian Cruiser.

Sorry I could not be of more help,
Delta

OK. Thanks nonetheless. The company I am working with right now is doing some virtual shipwreck work for the Irish Seabed Survey. Hopefully I can share some of that once it proceeds. Maybe it will spur some interest in your backer.
I actually purchased a plastic model of the ship and may get it modeled by a CAD guy or something. Or do it myself.

We map all over the Med. so if there are any wrecks you might want mapped, let me know. You never know where I'll be when I accidentally log some sonar data :)
